ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਭੇਖੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ
गउड़ी महला १ ॥
Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1.
Gauree, First Mehl:

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਭੇਖੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ
हउमै करत भेखी नही जानिआ ॥
Ha▫umai karaṯ bẖekẖī nahī jāni▫ā.
Acting in egotism, the Lord is not known, even by wearing religious robes.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
गुरमुखि भगति विरले मनु मानिआ ॥१॥
Gurmukẖ bẖagaṯ virle man māni▫ā. ||1||
How rare is that Gurmukh, who surrenders his mind in devotional worship. ||1||

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ
हउ हउ करत नही सचु पाईऐ ॥
Ha▫o ha▫o karaṯ nahī sacẖ pā▫ī▫ai.
By actions done in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the True Lord is not obtained.

ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
हउमै जाइ परम पदु पाईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Ha▫umai jā▫e param paḏ pā▫ī▫ai. ||1|| rahā▫o.
But when egotism departs, then the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||1||Pause||

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ
हउमै करि राजे बहु धावहि ॥
Ha▫umai kar rāje baho ḏẖāvėh.
The kings act in egotism, and undertake all sorts of expeditions.

ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥
हउमै खपहि जनमि मरि आवहि ॥२॥
Ha▫umai kẖapėh janam mar āvahi. ||2||
But through their egotism, they are ruined; they die, only to be reborn over and over again. ||2||

ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ
हउमै निवरै गुर सबदु वीचारै ॥
Ha▫umai nivrai gur sabaḏ vīcẖārai.
Egotism is overcome only by contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥
चंचल मति तिआगै पंच संघारै ॥३॥
Cẖancẖal maṯ ṯi▫āgai pancẖ sangẖārai. ||3||
One who restrains his fickle mind subdues the five passions. ||3||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ
अंतरि साचु सहज घरि आवहि ॥
Anṯar sācẖ sahj gẖar āvahi.
With the True Lord deep within the self, the Celestial Mansion is intuitively found.

ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥
राजनु जाणि परम गति पावहि ॥४॥
Rājan jāṇ param gaṯ pāvahi. ||4||
Understanding the Sovereign Lord, the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||4||

ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ
सचु करणी गुरु भरमु चुकावै ॥
Sacẖ karṇī gur bẖaram cẖukẖāvai.
The Guru dispels the doubts of those whose actions are true.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
निरभउ कै घरि ताड़ी लावै ॥५॥
Nirbẖa▫o kai gẖar ṯāṛī lāvai. ||5||
They focus their attention on the Home of the Fearless Lord. ||5||

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ
हउ हउ करि मरणा किआ पावै ॥
Ha▫o ha▫o kar marṇā ki▫ā pāvai.
Those who act in egotism, selfishness and conceit die; what do they gain?

ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
पूरा गुरु भेटे सो झगरु चुकावै ॥६॥
Pūrā gur bẖete so jẖagar cẖukẖāvai. ||6||
Those who meet the Perfect Guru are rid of all conflicts. ||6||

ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ
जेती है तेती किहु नाही ॥
Jeṯī hai ṯeṯī kihu nāhī.
Whatever exists, is in reality nothing.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਭੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
गुरमुखि गिआन भेटि गुण गाही ॥७॥
Gurmukẖ gi▫ān bẖet guṇ gāhī. ||7||
Obtaining spiritual wisdom from the Guru, I sing the Glories of God. ||7||

ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਵੈ
हउमै बंधन बंधि भवावै ॥
Ha▫umai banḏẖan banḏẖ bẖavāvai.
Egotism binds people in bondage, and causes them to wander around lost.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧੩॥
नानक राम भगति सुखु पावै ॥८॥१३॥
Nānak rām bẖagaṯ sukẖ pāvai. ||8||13||
O Nanak, peace is obtained through devotional worship of the Lord. ||8||13||
