ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਕੀਆ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ ब्रहमै गरबु कीआ नही जानिआ ॥ Barahmai garab kī▫ā nahī jāni▫ā. Brahma acted in pride, and did not understand. ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ गउड़ी महला १ ॥ Ga▫oṛī mėhlā 1. Gauree, First Mehl: ਜਹ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਤਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ जह प्रभ सिमरे तही मनु मानिआ ॥१॥ Jah parabẖ simre ṯahī man māni▫ā. ||1|| Remembering God in meditation, the mind is conciliated. ||1|| ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪੜੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥ बेद की बिपति पड़ी पछुतानिआ ॥ Beḏ kī bipaṯ paṛī pacẖẖuṯāni▫ā. Only when he was faced with the downfall of the Vedas did he repent. ਐਸਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥ ऐसा गरबु बुरा संसारै ॥ Aisā garab burā sansārai. Such is the horrible pride of the world. ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ जिसु गुरु मिलै तिसु गरबु निवारै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Jis gur milai ṯis garab nivārai. ||1|| rahā▫o. The Guru eliminates the pride of those who meet Him. ||1||Pause|| ਬਲਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ बलि राजा माइआ अहंकारी ॥ Bal rājā mā▫i▫ā ahaʼnkārī. Bal the King, in Maya and egotism, ਜਗਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰ ਅਫਾਰੀ ॥ जगन करै बहु भार अफारी ॥ Jagan karai baho bẖār afārī. held his ceremonial feasts, but he was puffed up with pride. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛੇ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਰੀ ॥੨॥ बिनु गुर पूछे जाइ पइआरी ॥२॥ Bin gur pūcẖẖe jā▫e pa▫i▫ārī. ||2|| Without the Guru's advice, he had to go to the underworld. ||2|| ਹਰੀਚੰਦੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਜਸੁ ਲੇਵੈ ॥ हरीचंदु दानु करै जसु लेवै ॥ Harīcẖanḏ ḏān karai jas levai. Hari Chand gave in charity, and earned public praise. ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਦੁਰਾਚਾਰੀ ॥ दुरमति हरणाखसु दुराचारी ॥ Ḏurmaṯ harṇākẖas ḏurācẖārī. The evil-minded Harnaakhash committed evil deeds. ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ਆਪੇ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੩॥ आपि भुलाइ आपे मति देवै ॥३॥ Āp bẖulā▫e āpe maṯ ḏevai. ||3|| The Lord Himself misleads people, and He Himself imparts understanding. ||3|| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ਅਭੇਵੈ ॥ बिनु गुर अंतु न पाइ अभेवै ॥ Bin gur anṯ na pā▫e abẖevai. But without the Guru, he did not find the limits of the Mysterious Lord. ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਗਰਬ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੀ ॥ प्रभु नाराइणु गरब प्रहारी ॥ Parabẖ nārā▫iṇ garab par▫hārī. God, the Lord of all, is the Destroyer of pride. ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੪॥ प्रहलाद उधारे किरपा धारी ॥४॥ Parahlāḏ uḏẖāre kirpā ḏẖārī. ||4|| He bestowed His Mercy, and saved Prahlaad. ||4|| ਭੂਲੋ ਰਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਅਚੇਤਿ ॥ भूलो रावणु मुगधु अचेति ॥ Bẖūlo rāvaṇ mugaḏẖ acẖeṯ. Raawan was deluded, foolish and unwise. ਲੂਟੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੀਸ ਸਮੇਤਿ ॥ लूटी लंका सीस समेति ॥ Lūtī lankā sīs sameṯ. Sri Lanka was plundered, and he lost his head. ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੇਤਿ ॥੫॥ गरबि गइआ बिनु सतिगुर हेति ॥५॥ Garab ga▫i▫ā bin saṯgur heṯ. ||5|| He indulged in ego, and lacked the love of the True Guru. ||5|| ਸਹਸਬਾਹੁ ਮਧੁ ਕੀਟ ਮਹਿਖਾਸਾ ॥ सहसबाहु मधु कीट महिखासा ॥ Sahasbāhu maḏẖ kīt mahikẖāsā. The Lord killed the thousand-armed Arjun, and the demons Madhu-keetab and Meh-khaasaa. ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਲੇ ਨਖਹੁ ਬਿਧਾਸਾ ॥ हरणाखसु ले नखहु बिधासा ॥ Harṇākẖas le nakẖahu biḏẖāsā. He seized Harnaakhash and tore him apart with his nails. ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥੬॥ दैत संघारे बिनु भगति अभिआसा ॥६॥ Ḏaiṯ sangẖāre bin bẖagaṯ abẖi▫āsā. ||6|| The demons were slain; they did not practice devotional worship. ||6|| ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕਾਲਜਮੁਨ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥ जरासंधि कालजमुन संघारे ॥ Jarāsanḏẖ kālajmun sangẖāre. The demons Jaraa-sandh and Kaal-jamun were destroyed. ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ आपे सतिगुरु सबदु बीचारे ॥ Āpe saṯgur sabaḏ bīcẖāre. He Himself, as the True Guru, contemplates the Shabad. ਰਕਤਬੀਜੁ ਕਾਲੁਨੇਮੁ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥ रकतबीजु कालुनेमु बिदारे ॥ Rakaṯbīj kālunem biḏāre. Rakat-beej and Kaal-naym were annihilated. ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੭॥ दैत संघारि संत निसतारे ॥७॥ Ḏaiṯ sangẖār sanṯ nisṯāre. ||7|| Slaying the demons, the Lord saved His Saints. ||7|| ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥ दूजै भाइ दैत संघारे ॥ Ḏūjai bẖā▫e ḏaiṯ sangẖāre. Because of the love of duality, God killed the demons. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥ गुरमुखि साचि भगति निसतारे ॥८॥ Gurmukẖ sācẖ bẖagaṯ nisṯāre. ||8|| By their true devotion, the Gurmukhs have been saved. ||8|| ਬੂਡਾ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥ बूडा दुरजोधनु पति खोई ॥ Būdā ḏurjoḏẖan paṯ kẖo▫ī. Sinking down, Durodhan lost his honor. ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ रामु न जानिआ करता सोई ॥ Rām na jāni▫ā karṯā so▫ī. He did not know the Creator Lord. ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੂਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੯॥ जन कउ दूखि पचै दुखु होई ॥९॥ Jan ka▫o ḏūkẖ pacẖai ḏukẖ ho▫ī. ||9|| One who makes the Lord's humble servant suffer, shall himself suffer and rot. ||9|| ਜਨਮੇਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ जनमेजै गुर सबदु न जानिआ ॥ Janmejai gur sabaḏ na jāni▫ā. Janameja did not know the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥੧੦॥ इकु तिलु भूले बहुरि पछुतानिआ ॥१०॥ Ik ṯil bẖūle bahur pacẖẖuṯāni▫ā. ||10|| Making a mistake, for even an instant, you shall regret and repent later on. ||10|| ਕੰਸੁ ਕੇਸੁ ਚਾਂਡੂਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ कंसु केसु चांडूरु न कोई ॥ Kans kes cẖāʼndūr na ko▫ī. Kansa the King and his warriors Kays and Chandoor had no equals. ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥ किउ सुखु पावै भरमि भुलानिआ ॥ Ki▫o sukẖ pāvai bẖaram bẖulāni▫ā. Deluded by doubt, how could he find peace? ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥ रामु न चीनिआ अपनी पति खोई ॥ Rām na cẖīni▫ā apnī paṯ kẖo▫ī. But they did not remember the Lord, and they lost their honor. ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧੧॥ बिनु जगदीस न राखै कोई ॥११॥ Bin jagḏīs na rākẖai ko▫ī. ||11|| Without the Lord of the Universe, no one can be saved. ||11|| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ बिनु गुर गरबु न मेटिआ जाइ ॥ Bin gur garab na meti▫ā jā▫e. Without the Guru, pride cannot be eradicated. ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ गुरमति धरमु धीरजु हरि नाइ ॥ Gurmaṯ ḏẖaram ḏẖīraj har nā▫e. Following the Guru's Teachings, one obtains Dharmic faith, composure and the Lord's Name. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੧੨॥੯॥ नानक नामु मिलै गुण गाइ ॥१२॥९॥ Nānak nām milai guṇ gā▫e. ||12||9|| O Nanak, singing the Glories of God, His Name is received. ||12||9|| ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ बिनु हरि नाम कहा सुखु पावउ ॥१॥ Bin har nām kahā sukẖ pāva▫o. ||1|| But without the Lord's Name, where would I find peace? ||1|| ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਅੰਕਿ ਚੜਾਵਉ ॥ चोआ चंदनु अंकि चड़ावउ ॥ Cẖo▫ā cẖanḏan ank cẖaṛāva▫o. I may anoint my limbs with sandalwood oil.
