Shalok, Fifth Mehl:

ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਦੇ ਕਚੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
झड़ि झड़ि पवदे कचे बिरही जिन्हा कारि न आई ॥१॥
Jẖaṛ jẖaṛ pavḏe kacẖe birhī jinĥā kār na ā▫ī. ||1||
The false, immature lovers do not know the way of love, and so they fall. ||1||

ਰਤੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਿ ਮੁਖੁ ਮੋੜੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸਿਞਾਤਾ ਸਾਈ
रते सेई जि मुखु न मोड़ंन्हि जिन्ही सिञाता साई ॥
Raṯe se▫ī jė mukẖ na moṛaʼnniĥ jinĥī siñāṯā sā▫ī.
They alone are imbued with the Lord, who do not turn their faces away from Him - they realize Him.

ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੁਡੰਦੜੀ ਸੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
धूड़ी विचि लुडंदड़ी सोहां नानक तै सह नाले ॥२॥
Ḏẖūṛī vicẖ ludanḏ▫ṛī sohāʼn Nānak ṯai sah nāle. ||2||
Even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, O Nanak, if my Husband Lord is with me. ||2||

ਧਣੀ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਭਾਹੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੇ
धणी विहूणा पाट पट्मबर भाही सेती जाले ॥
Ḏẖaṇī vihūṇā pāt patambar bẖāhī seṯī jāle.
Without my Master, I will burn my silk and satin clothes in the fire.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ
गुर कै सबदि अराधीऐ नामि रंगि बैरागु ॥
Gur kai sabaḏ arāḏẖī▫ai nām rang bairāg.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I worship and adore the Naam, with love and balanced detachment.

ਜੀਤੇ ਪੰਚ ਬੈਰਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥੩॥
जीते पंच बैराईआ नानक सफल मारू इहु रागु ॥३॥
Jīṯe pancẖ bairā▫ī▫ā Nānak safal mārū ih rāg. ||3||
When the five enemies are overcome, O Nanak, this musical measure of Raga Maaroo becomes fruitful. ||3||

ਜਾਂ ਮੂੰ ਇਕੁ ਲਖ ਤਉ ਜਿਤੀ ਪਿਨਣੇ ਦਰਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ
जां मूं इकु त लख तउ जिती पिनणे दरि कितड़े ॥
Jāʼn mūʼn ik ṯa lakẖ ṯa▫o jiṯī pinṇe ḏar kiṯ▫ṛe.
When I have the One Lord, I have tens of thousands. Otherwise, people like me beg from door to door.

ਬਾਮਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਨੰਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੪॥
बामणु बिरथा गइओ जनमु जिनि कीतो सो विसरे ॥४॥
Bāmaṇ birthā ga▫i▫o jannam jin kīṯo so visre. ||4||
O Brahmin, your life has passed away uselessly; you have forgotten the One who created you. ||4||

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸੋ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੀਐ ਕਬਹੂ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ
सोरठि सो रसु पीजीऐ कबहू न फीका होइ ॥
Soraṯẖ so ras pījī▫ai kabhū na fīkā ho▫e.
In Raga Sorat'h, drink in this sublime essence, which never loses its taste.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
नानक राम नाम गुन गाईअहि दरगह निरमल सोइ ॥५॥
Nānak rām nām gun gā▫ī▫ah ḏargėh nirmal so▫e. ||5||
O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, one's reputation is immaculate in the Court of the Lord. ||5||

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋਇ ਮਾਰਈ
जो प्रभि रखे आपि तिन कोइ न मारई ॥
Jo parabẖ rakẖe āp ṯin ko▫e na mār▫ī.
No one can kill those whom God Himself protects.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਈ
अंदरि नामु निधानु सदा गुण सारई ॥
Anḏar nām niḏẖān saḏā guṇ sār▫ī.
The treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within them. They cherish His Glorious Virtues forever.

ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਅਗੰਮ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਰਈ
एका टेक अगम मनि तनि प्रभु धारई ॥
Ėkā tek agamm man ṯan parabẖ ḏẖār▫ī.
They take the Support of the One, the Inaccessible Lord; they enshrine God in their mind and body.

ਲਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਕੋ ਉਤਾਰਈ
लगा रंगु अपारु को न उतारई ॥
Lagā rang apār ko na uṯāra▫ī.
They are imbued with the Love of the Infinite Lord, and no one can wipe it away.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਈ
गुरमुखि हरि गुण गाइ सहजि सुखु सारई ॥
Gurmukẖ har guṇ gā▫e sahj sukẖ sār▫ī.
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they obtain the most excellent celestial peace and poise.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰਈ ॥੬॥
नानक नामु निधानु रिदै उरि हारई ॥६॥
Nānak nām niḏẖān riḏai ur hār▫ī. ||6||
O Nanak, they enshrine the treasure of the Naam in their hearts. ||6||

ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਦੁਯੀ ਗਣਤ ਲਾਹਿ
करे सु चंगा मानि दुयी गणत लाहि ॥
Kare so cẖanga mān ḏuyī gaṇaṯ lāhi.
Whatever God does, accept that as good; leave behind all other judgments.

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ
जो धुरि लिखिआ लेखु सोई सभ कमाइ ॥
Jo ḏẖur likẖi▫ā lekẖ so▫ī sabẖ kamā▫e.
Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny.

ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ
जन देहु मती उपदेसु विचहु भरमु जाइ ॥
Jan ḏeh maṯī upḏes vicẖahu bẖaram jā▫e.
Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within.

ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ
अपणी नदरि निहालि आपे लैहु लाइ ॥
Apṇī naḏar nihāl āpe laihu lā▫e.
He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself.

ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ
सभु कछु तिस दै वसि दूजी नाहि जाइ ॥
Sabẖ kacẖẖ ṯis ḏai vas ḏūjī nāhi jā▫e.
Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
नानक सुख अनद भए प्रभ की मंनि रजाइ ॥७॥
Nānak sukẖ anaḏ bẖa▫e parabẖ kī man rajā▫e. ||7||
Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7||

ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ
गुरु पूरा जिन सिमरिआ सेई भए निहाल ॥
Gur pūrā jin simri▫ā se▫ī bẖa▫e nihāl.
Those who meditate in remembrance on the Perfect Guru, are exalted and uplifted.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥
नानक नामु अराधणा कारजु आवै रासि ॥८॥
Nānak nām arāḏẖaṇā kāraj āvai rās. ||8||
O Nanak, dwelling on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all affairs are resolved. ||8||

ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ
पापी करम कमावदे करदे हाए हाइ ॥
Pāpī karam kamāvḏe karḏe hā▫e hā▫e.
The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
नानक जिउ मथनि माधाणीआ तिउ मथे ध्रम राइ ॥९॥
Nānak ji▫o mathan māḏẖāṇī▫ā ṯi▫o mathe ḏẖaram rā▫e. ||9||
O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9||

ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
नानक धरम ऐसे चवहि कीतो भवनु पुनीत ॥१०॥
Nānak ḏẖaram aise cẖavėh kīṯo bẖavan punīṯ. ||10||
O Nanak, speaking in Righteousness, one's world becomes sanctified. ||10||

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ
नामु धिआइनि साजना जनम पदारथु जीति ॥
Nām ḏẖi▫ā▫in sājnā janam paḏārath jīṯ.
Meditating on the Naam, O friend, the treasure of life is won.

ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ
खुभड़ी कुथाइ मिठी गलणि कुमंत्रीआ ॥
Kẖubẖ▫ṛī kuthā▫e miṯẖī galaṇ kumanṯarī▫ā.
I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
नानक सेई उबरे जिना भागु मथाहि ॥११॥
Nānak se▫ī ubre jinā bẖāg mathāhi. ||11||
O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11||

ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ
सुतड़े सुखी सवंन्हि जो रते सह आपणै ॥
Suṯ▫ṛe sukẖī savaʼnniĥ jo raṯe sah āpṇai.
They alone sleep and dream in peace, who are imbued with the Love of their Husband Lord.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧੨॥
प्रेम विछोहा धणी सउ अठे पहर लवंन्हि ॥१२॥
Parem vicẖẖohā ḏẖaṇī sa▫o aṯẖe pahar lavaʼnniĥ. ||12||
Those who have been separated from the Love of their Master, scream and cry twenty-four hours a day. ||12||

ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ
सुतड़े असंख माइआ झूठी कारणे ॥
Suṯ▫ṛe asaʼnkẖ mā▫i▫ā jẖūṯẖī kārṇe.
Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥
नानक से जागंन्हि जि रसना नामु उचारणे ॥१३॥
Nānak se jāgaʼnniĥ jė rasnā nām ucẖārṇe. ||13||
O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13||

ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ
म्रिग तिसना पेखि भुलणे वुठे नगर गंध्रब ॥
Marig ṯisnā pekẖ bẖulṇe vuṯẖe nagar ganḏẖarab.
Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded.

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
जिनी सचु अराधिआ नानक मनि तनि फब ॥१४॥
Jinī sacẖ arāḏẖi▫ā Nānak man ṯan fab. ||14||
Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14||

ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ
पतित उधारण पारब्रहमु सम्रथ पुरखु अपारु ॥
Paṯiṯ uḏẖāraṇ pārbarahm samrath purakẖ apār.
The All-powerful Supreme Lord God, the Infinite Primal Being, is the Saving Grace of sinners.

ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧੫॥
जिसहि उधारे नानका सो सिमरे सिरजणहारु ॥१५॥
Jisahi uḏẖāre nānkā so simre sirjaṇhār. ||15||
Those whom He saves, meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord. ||15||

ਦੂਜੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਇਕਸ ਸਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ
दूजी छोडि कुवाटड़ी इकस सउ चितु लाइ ॥
Ḏūjī cẖẖod kuvātaṛī ikas sa▫o cẖiṯ lā▫e.
Forsake duality and the ways of evil; focus your consciousness on the One Lord.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਹਣਿ ਲੁੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੰਦੜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੬॥
दूजै भावीं नानका वहणि लुड़्हंदड़ी जाइ ॥१६॥
Ḏūjai bẖāvīʼn nānkā vahaṇ luṛĥaʼnḏaṛī jā▫e. ||16||
In the love of duality, O Nanak, the mortals are being washed downstream. ||16||

ਤਿਹਟੜੇ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ
तिहटड़े बाजार सउदा करनि वणजारिआ ॥
Ŧihṯaṛe bājār sa▫uḏā karan vaṇjāri▫ā.
In the markets and bazaars of the three qualities, the merchants make their deals.

ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚੜੇ ਪਾਸਾਰ ॥੧੭॥
सचु वखरु जिनी लदिआ से सचड़े पासार ॥१७॥
Sacẖ vakẖar jinī laḏi▫ā se sacẖṛe pāsār. ||17||
Those who load the true merchandise are the true traders. ||17||

ਪੰਥਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਜਾਣਈ ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਗਵਾਰਿ
पंथा प्रेम न जाणई भूली फिरै गवारि ॥
Panthā parem na jāṇ▫ī bẖūlī firai gavār.
Those who do not know the way of love are foolish; they wander lost and confused.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਉਦੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਅੰਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਰ ॥੧੮॥
नानक हरि बिसराइ कै पउदे नरकि अंध्यार ॥१८॥
Nānak har bisrā▫e kai pa▫uḏe narak anḏẖ▫yār. ||18||
O Nanak, forgetting the Lord, they fall into the deep, dark pit of hell. ||18||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੰਮਾਂ ਦੰਮ
माइआ मनहु न वीसरै मांगै दमां दम ॥
Mā▫i▫ā manhu na vīsrai māʼngai ḏammāʼn ḏamm.
In his mind, the mortal does not forget Maya; he begs for more and more wealth.

ਤਿਚਰੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਥੁੜੀਦੋ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ
तिचरु मूलि न थुड़ींदो जिचरु आपि क्रिपालु ॥
Ŧicẖar mūl na thuṛīʼnḏo jicẖar āp kirpāl.
The mortal does not run out of capital, as long as the Lord Himself is merciful.

ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੰਮਿ ॥੧੯॥
सो प्रभु चिति न आवई नानक नही करमि ॥१९॥
So parabẖ cẖiṯ na āvī Nānak nahī karamm. ||19||
That God does not even come into his consciousness; O Nanak, it is not in his karma. ||19||

ਸਬਦੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਖਰਚਿ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥੨੦॥
सबदु अखुटु बाबा नानका खाहि खरचि धनु मालु ॥२०॥
Sabaḏ akẖut bābā nānkā kẖāhi kẖaracẖ ḏẖan māl. ||20||
The Word of the Shabad is Guru Nanak's inexhaustible treasure; this wealth and capital never runs out, no matter how much it is spent and consumed. ||20||

ਖੰਭ ਵਿਕਾਂਦੜੇ ਜੇ ਲਹਾਂ ਘਿੰਨਾ ਸਾਵੀ ਤੋਲਿ
ख्मभ विकांदड़े जे लहां घिंना सावी तोलि ॥
Kẖanbẖ vikāʼnḏ▫ṛe je lahāʼn gẖinnā sāvī ṯol.
If I could find wings for sale, I would buy them with an equal weight of my flesh.

ਤੰਨਿ ਜੜਾਂਈ ਆਪਣੈ ਲਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਟੋਲਿ ॥੨੧॥
तंनि जड़ांई आपणै लहां सु सजणु टोलि ॥२१॥
Ŧann jaṛāʼn▫ī āpṇai lahāʼn so sajaṇ tol. ||21||
I would attach them to my body, and seek out and find my Friend. ||21||

ਸਜਣੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾਂ ਦੈ ਸਾਹੁ
सजणु सचा पातिसाहु सिरि साहां दै साहु ॥
Sajaṇ sacẖā pāṯisāhu sir sāhāʼn ḏai sāhu.
My Friend is the True Supreme King, the King over the heads of kings.

ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਹਿਠਿਆ ਸੋਹੀਐ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੨॥
जिसु पासि बहिठिआ सोहीऐ सभनां दा वेसाहु ॥२२॥
Jis pās bahiṯẖi▫ā sohī▫ai sabẖnāʼn ḏā vesāhu. ||22||
Sitting by His side, we are exalted and beautified; He is the Support of all. ||22||
