ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ सलोक महला ३ Salok mėhlaa 3 Shalok, Third Mehl: ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥ Ik▫oaⁿkaar saṫgur parsaaḋ. One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਏਹ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਰਮੁ ॥ अभिआगत एह न आखीअहि जिन कै मन महि भरमु ॥ Abʰi▫aagaṫ éh na aakʰee▫ahi jin kæ man mėh bʰaram. Do not call the wandering beggars holy men, if their minds are filled with doubt. ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਦਿਤੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਧਰਮੁ ॥੧॥ तिन के दिते नानका तेहो जेहा धरमु ॥१॥ Ṫin ké ḋiṫé naankaa ṫého jéhaa ḋʰaram. ||1|| Whoever gives to them, O Nanak! Earns the same sort of merit. ||1|| ਅਭੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਭੀਖਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ अभै निरंजन परम पदु ता का भीखकु होइ ॥ Abʰæ niranjan param paḋ ṫaa kaa bʰeekʰak ho▫é. One who begs for the supreme-status of the Fearless and Immaculate Lord - ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ तिस का भोजनु नानका विरला पाए कोइ ॥२॥ Ṫis kaa bʰojan naankaa virlaa paa▫é ko▫é. ||2|| how rare are those who have the opportunity, O Nanak! To give food to such a person. ||2|| ਹੋਵਾ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਵੇਦ ਪੜਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਰਿ ॥ होवा पंडितु जोतकी वेद पड़ा मुखि चारि ॥ Hovaa pandiṫ joṫkee véḋ paṛaa mukʰ chaar. If I were a religious scholar, an astrologer, or one who could recite the four Vedas, ਨਵਾ ਖੰਡਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਣੀਆ ਅਪਨੇ ਚਜ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥ नवा खंडा विचि जाणीआ अपने चज वीचार ॥३॥ Navaa kʰanda vich jaaṇee▫aa apné chaj veechaar. ||3|| I could be famous throughout the nine regions of the earth, for my wisdom and thoughtful contemplation. ||3|| ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਕੈਲੀ ਘਾਤੁ ਕੰਞਕਾ ਅਣਚਾਰੀ ਕਾ ਧਾਨੁ ॥ ब्रहमण कैली घातु कंञका अणचारी का धानु ॥ Barahmaṇ kælee gʰaaṫ kañkaa aṇchaaree kaa ḋʰaan. If a Brahmin kills a cow or a female infant, and accepts the offerings of an evil person, ਫਿਟਕ ਫਿਟਕਾ ਕੋੜੁ ਬਦੀਆ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ फिटक फिटका कोड़ु बदीआ सदा सदा अभिमानु ॥ Fitak fitkaa koṛ baḋee▫aa saḋaa saḋaa abʰimaan. he is cursed with the leprosy of curses and criticism; he is forever and ever filled with egotistical pride. ਪਾਹਿ ਏਤੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਵੀਸਰਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ पाहि एते जाहि वीसरि नानका इकु नामु ॥ Paahi éṫé jaahi veesar naankaa ik naam. One who forgets the Naam, O Nanak! Is covered by countless sins. ਸਭ ਬੁਧੀ ਜਾਲੀਅਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਰਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੪॥ सभ बुधी जालीअहि इकु रहै ततु गिआनु ॥४॥ Sabʰ buḋʰee jaalee▫ah ik rahæ ṫaṫ gi▫aan. ||4|| Let all wisdom be burnt away, except for the essence of spiritual wisdom. ||4|| ਮਾਥੈ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ माथै जो धुरि लिखिआ सु मेटि न सकै कोइ ॥ Maaṫʰæ jo ḋʰur likʰi▫aa so mét na sakæ ko▫é. No one can erase that primal destiny written upon one’s forehead. ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥ नानक जो लिखिआ सो वरतदा सो बूझै जिस नो नदरि होइ ॥५॥ Naanak jo likʰi▫aa so varaṫḋaa so boojʰæ jis no naḋar ho▫é. ||5|| O Nanak! Whatever is written there, comes to pass. He alone understands, who is blessed by God’s Grace. ||5|| ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ ॥ जिनी नामु विसारिआ कूड़ै लालचि लगि ॥ Jinee naam visaari▫aa kooṛæ laalach lag. Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and become attached to greed and fraud, ਧੰਧਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ॥ धंधा माइआ मोहणी अंतरि तिसना अगि ॥ Ḋʰanḋʰaa maa▫i▫aa mohṇee anṫar ṫisnaa ag. are engrossed in the entanglements of Maya the enticer, with the fire of desire within them. ਜਿਨੑਾ ਵੇਲਿ ਨ ਤੂੰਬੜੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਠਗੇ ਠਗਿ ॥ जिन्हा वेलि न तू्मबड़ी माइआ ठगे ठगि ॥ Jinĥaa vél na ṫoombṛee maa▫i▫aa tʰagé tʰag. Those who, like the pumpkin vine, are too stubborn to climb the trellis, are cheated by Maya the cheater. ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਨੑਿ ਚਲਾਈਅਹਿ ਨਾ ਮਿਲਹੀ ਵਗਿ ਸਗਿ ॥ मनमुख बंन्हि चलाईअहि ना मिलही वगि सगि ॥ Manmukʰ banėh chalaa▫ee▫ah naa milhee vag sag. The self-willed Manmukhs are bound and gagged and led away; the dogs do not join the herd of cows. ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥ आपि भुलाए भुलीऐ आपे मेलि मिलाइ ॥ Aap bʰulaa▫é bʰulee▫æ aapé mél milaa▫é. The Lord Himself misleads the misguided ones, and He Himself unites them in His Union. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੬॥ नानक गुरमुखि छुटीऐ जे चलै सतिगुर भाइ ॥६॥ Naanak gurmukʰ chʰutee▫æ jé chalæ saṫgur bʰaa▫é. ||6|| O Nanak! The Gurmukhs are saved; they walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||6|| ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ॥ सालाही सालाहणा भी सचा सालाहि ॥ Saalaahee salaahṇaa bʰee sachaa saalaahi. I praise the Praiseworthy Lord, and sing the Praises of the True Lord. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਦਰੁ ਬੀਭਾ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਆਹਿ ॥੭॥ नानक सचा एकु दरु बीभा परहरि आहि ॥७॥ Naanak sachaa ék ḋar beebʰaa par▫har aahi. ||7|| O Nanak! The One Lord alone is True; stay away from all other doors. ||7|| ਨਾਨਕ ਜਹ ਜਹ ਮੈ ਫਿਰਉ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥ नानक जह जह मै फिरउ तह तह साचा सोइ ॥ Naanak jah jah mæ fira▫o ṫah ṫah saachaa so▫é. O Nanak! Wherever I go, I find the True Lord. ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥ जह देखा तह एकु है गुरमुखि परगटु होइ ॥८॥ Jah ḋékʰaa ṫah ék hæ gurmukʰ pargat ho▫é. ||8|| Wherever I look, I see the One Lord. He reveals Himself to the Gurmukh. ||8|| ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਣੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥ दूख विसारणु सबदु है जे मंनि वसाए कोइ ॥ Ḋookʰ visaaraṇ sabaḋ hæ jé man vasaa▫é ko▫é. The Word of the Shabad is the Dispeller of sorrow, if one enshrines it in the mind. ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਕਰਮ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੯॥ गुर किरपा ते मनि वसै करम परापति होइ ॥९॥ Gur kirpaa ṫé man vasæ karam paraapaṫ ho▫é. ||9|| By Guru’s Grace, it dwells in the mind; by God’s Mercy, it is obtained. ||9|| ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੇ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਖੂਹਣਿ ਲਖ ਅਸੰਖ ॥ नानक हउ हउ करते खपि मुए खूहणि लख असंख ॥ Naanak ha▫o ha▫o karṫé kʰap mu▫é kʰoohaṇ lakʰ asaⁿkʰ. O Nanak! Acting in egotism, countless thousands have wasted away to death. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਲੰਖ ॥੧੦॥ सतिगुर मिले सु उबरे साचै सबदि अलंख ॥१०॥ Saṫgur milé so ubré saachæ sabaḋ alankʰ. ||10|| Those who meet with the True Guru are saved, through the Shabad, the True Word of the Inscrutable Lord. ||10|| ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥ जिना सतिगुरु इक मनि सेविआ तिन जन लागउ पाइ ॥ Jinaa saṫgur ik man sévi▫aa ṫin jan laaga▫o paa▫é. Those who serve the True Guru single-mindedly - I fall at the feet of those humble beings. ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਭੁਖ ਜਾਇ ॥ गुर सबदी हरि मनि वसै माइआ की भुख जाइ ॥ Gur sabḋee har man vasæ maa▫i▫aa kee bʰukʰ jaa▫é. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the Lord abides in the mind, and the hunger for Maya departs. ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਊਜਲੇ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ से जन निरमल ऊजले जि गुरमुखि नामि समाइ ॥ Sé jan nirmal oojlé jė gurmukʰ naam samaa▫é. Immaculate and pure are those humble beings, who, as Gurmukh, merge in the Naam. ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਰਿ ਪਤਿਸਾਹੀਆ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥੧੧॥ नानक होरि पतिसाहीआ कूड़ीआ नामि रते पातिसाह ॥११॥ Naanak hor paṫisaahee▫aa kooṛee▫aa naam raṫé paaṫisaah. ||11|| O Nanak! Other empires are false; they alone are true emperors, who are imbued with the Naam. ||11|| ਜਿਉ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਘਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਅਤਿ ਲੋਚੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਇ ॥ जिउ पुरखै घरि भगती नारि है अति लोचै भगती भाइ ॥ Ji▫o purkʰæ gʰar bʰagṫee naar hæ aṫ lochæ bʰagṫee bʰaa▫é. The devoted wife in her husband’s home has a great longing to perform loving devotional service to him; ਬਹੁ ਰਸ ਸਾਲਣੇ ਸਵਾਰਦੀ ਖਟ ਰਸ ਮੀਠੇ ਪਾਇ ॥ बहु रस सालणे सवारदी खट रस मीठे पाइ ॥ Baho ras saalṇé savaarḋee kʰat ras meetʰé paa▫é. she prepares and offers to him all sorts of sweet delicacies and dishes of all flavors. ਤਿਉ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤ ਸਲਾਹਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ तिउ बाणी भगत सलाहदे हरि नामै चितु लाइ ॥ Ṫi▫o baṇee bʰagaṫ salaahḋé har naamæ chiṫ laa▫é. In the same way, the devotees praise the Word of the Guru’s Bani, and focus their consciousness on the Lord’s Name. ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਸਿਰੁ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ मनु तनु धनु आगै राखिआ सिरु वेचिआ गुर आगै जाइ ॥ Man ṫan ḋʰan aagæ raakʰi▫aa sir véchi▫aa gur aagæ jaa▫é. They place mind, body and wealth in offering before the Guru, and sell their heads to Him. ਭੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਗਤ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਚਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲੋਚਾ ਪੂਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥ भै भगती भगत बहु लोचदे प्रभ लोचा पूरि मिलाइ ॥ Bʰæ bʰagṫee bʰagaṫ baho lochḋé parabʰ lochaa poor milaa▫é. In the Fear of God, His devotees yearn for His devotional worship; God fulfills their desires, and merges them with Himself. ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਤਿਪਤਾਇ ॥ हरि प्रभु वेपरवाहु है कितु खाधै तिपताइ ॥ Har parabʰ véparvaahu hæ kiṫ kʰaaḋʰæ ṫipṫaa▫é. My Lord God is Self-existent and Independent. What does He need to eat to be satisfied? ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਤਿਪਤਾਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥ सतिगुर कै भाणै जो चलै तिपतासै हरि गुण गाइ ॥ Saṫgur kæ bʰaaṇæ jo chalæ ṫipṫaasæ har guṇ gaa▫é. Whoever walks in harmony with the Will of the True Guru, and sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, is pleasing to Him. ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਚਲੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੧੨॥ धनु धनु कलजुगि नानका जि चले सतिगुर भाइ ॥१२॥ Ḋʰan ḋʰan kaljug naankaa jė chalé saṫgur bʰaa▫é. ||12|| Blessed, blessed are they, in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, O Nanak! Who walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||12|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਰਖਿਓ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ सतिगुरू न सेविओ सबदु न रखिओ उर धारि ॥ Saṫguroo na sévi▫o sabaḋ na rakʰi▫o ur ḋʰaar. Those who do not serve the True Guru, and do not keep the Shabad enshrined in their hearts - ਧਿਗੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ धिगु तिना का जीविआ कितु आए संसारि ॥ Ḋʰig ṫinaa kaa jeevi▫aa kiṫ aa▫é sansaar. cursed are their lives. Why did they even come into the world? ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ गुरमती भउ मनि पवै तां हरि रसि लगै पिआरि ॥ Gurmaṫee bʰa▫o man pavæ ṫaaⁿ har ras lagæ pi▫aar. If one follows the Guru’s Teachings, and keeps the Fear of God in his mind, then he is lovingly attuned to the sublime essence of the Lord. ਨਾਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿ ॥੧੩॥ नाउ मिलै धुरि लिखिआ जन नानक पारि उतारि ॥१३॥ Naa▫o milæ ḋʰur likʰi▫aa jan Naanak paar uṫaar. ||13|| By his primal destiny, he obtains the Name; O Nanak! He is carried across. ||13|| ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿਆ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਸੈ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ माइआ मोहि जगु भरमिआ घरु मुसै खबरि न होइ ॥ Maa▫i▫aa mohi jag bʰarmi▫aa gʰar musæ kʰabar na ho▫é. The world wanders lost in emotional attachment to Maya; it does not realize that its own home is being plundered. ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮਨੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧਾ ਲੋਇ ॥ काम क्रोधि मनु हिरि लइआ मनमुख अंधा लोइ ॥ Kaam kroḋʰ man hir la▫i▫aa manmukʰ anḋʰaa lo▫é. The self-willed Manmukh is blind in the world; his mind is lured away by sexual desire and anger. ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ गिआन खड़ग पंच दूत संघारे गुरमति जागै सोइ ॥ Gi▫aan kʰaṛag panch ḋooṫ sangʰaaré gurmaṫ jaagæ so▫é. With the sword of spiritual wisdom, kill the five demons. Remain awake and aware of the Guru’s Teachings. ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ नाम रतनु परगासिआ मनु तनु निरमलु होइ ॥ Naam raṫan pargaasi▫aa man ṫan nirmal ho▫é. The Jewel of the Naam is revealed, and the mind and body are purified. ਨਾਮਹੀਨ ਨਕਟੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਇ ॥ नामहीन नकटे फिरहि बिनु नावै बहि रोइ ॥ Naamheen nakté firėh bin naavæ bahi ro▫é. Those who lack the Naam wander around lost, with their noses cut off; without the Name, they sit and cry. ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੪॥ नानक जो धुरि करतै लिखिआ सु मेटि न सकै कोइ ॥१४॥ Naanak jo ḋʰur karṫæ likʰi▫aa so mét na sakæ ko▫é. ||14|| O Nanak! No one can erase that which is preordained by the Creator Lord. ||14|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਖਟਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ गुरमुखा हरि धनु खटिआ गुर कै सबदि वीचारि ॥ Gurmukʰaa har ḋʰan kʰati▫aa gur kæ sabaḋ veechaar. The Gurmukhs earn the wealth of the Lord, contemplating the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਤੁਟ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥ नामु पदारथु पाइआ अतुट भरे भंडार ॥ Naam paḋaaraṫʰ paa▫i▫aa aṫut bʰaré bʰandaar. They receive the wealth of the Naam; their treasures are overflowing. ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਰਹਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ हरि गुण बाणी उचरहि अंतु न पारावारु ॥ Har guṇ baṇee uchrahi anṫ na paaraavaar. Through the Word of the Guru’s Bani, they utter the Glorious Praises of the Lord, whose end and limitations cannot be found. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੈ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੁ ॥੧੫॥ नानक सभ कारण करता करै वेखै सिरजनहारु ॥१५॥ Naanak sabʰ kaaraṇ karṫaa karæ vékʰæ sirjanhaar. ||15|| O Nanak! The Creator is the Doer of all; the Creator Lord beholds all. ||15|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਚੜਿਆ ਦਸਵੈ ਆਕਾਸਿ ॥ गुरमुखि अंतरि सहजु है मनु चड़िआ दसवै आकासि ॥ Gurmukʰ anṫar sahj hæ man chaṛi▫aa ḋasvæ aakaas. Within the Gurmukh is intuitive peace and poise; his mind ascends to the Tenth Plane of the Akashic Ethers. ਤਿਥੈ ਊਂਘ ਨ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ तिथै ऊंघ न भुख है हरि अमृत नामु सुख वासु ॥ Ṫiṫʰæ ooⁿgʰ na bʰukʰ hæ har amriṫ naam sukʰ vaas. No one is sleepy or hungry there; they dwell in the peace of the Ambrosial Name of the Lord. ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਿਆਪਤ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਥੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੧੬॥ नानक दुखु सुखु विआपत नही जिथै आतम राम प्रगासु ॥१६॥ Naanak ḋukʰ sukʰ vi▫aapaṫ nahee jiṫʰæ aaṫam raam pargaas. ||16|| O Nanak! Pain and pleasure do not afflict anyone, where the Light of the Lord, the Supreme Soul, illuminates. ||16|| ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਾ ਚੋਲੜਾ ਸਭ ਗਲਿ ਆਏ ਪਾਇ ॥ काम क्रोध का चोलड़ा सभ गलि आए पाइ ॥ Kaam kroḋʰ kaa cholṛaa sabʰ gal aa▫é paa▫é. All have come, wearing the robes of sexual desire and anger. ਇਕਿ ਉਪਜਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ इकि उपजहि इकि बिनसि जांहि हुकमे आवै जाइ ॥ Ik upjahi ik binas jaaⁿhi hukmé aavæ jaa▫é. Some are born, and some pass away. They come and go according to the Hukam of the Lord’s Command. ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਗਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ जंमणु मरणु न चुकई रंगु लगा दूजै भाइ ॥ Jamaṇ maraṇ na chuk▫ee rang lagaa ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é. Their comings and goings in reincarnation do not end; they are imbued with the love of duality. ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਨੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੭॥ बंधनि बंधि भवाईअनु करणा कछू न जाइ ॥१७॥ Banḋʰan banḋʰ bʰavaa▫ee▫an karṇaa kachʰoo na jaa▫é. ||17|| Bound in bondage, they are made to wander, and they cannot do anything about it. ||17|| ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀਅਨੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਆਇ ॥ जिन कउ किरपा धारीअनु तिना सतिगुरु मिलिआ आइ ॥ Jin ka▫o kirpaa ḋʰaaree▫an ṫinaa saṫgur mili▫aa aa▫é. Those, upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy, come and meet the True Guru. ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਉਲਟੀ ਭਈ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ सतिगुरि मिले उलटी भई मरि जीविआ सहजि सुभाइ ॥ Saṫgur milé ultee bʰa▫ee mar jeevi▫aa sahj subʰaa▫é. Meeting with the True Guru, they turn away from the world; they remain dead while still alive, with intuitive peace and poise. ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧੮॥ नानक भगती रतिआ हरि हरि नामि समाइ ॥१८॥ Naanak bʰagṫee raṫi▫aa har har naam samaa▫é. ||18|| O Nanak! The devotees are imbued with the Lord; they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||18|| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥ मनमुख चंचल मति है अंतरि बहुतु चतुराई ॥ Manmukʰ chanchal maṫ hæ anṫar bahuṫ chaṫuraa▫ee. The intellect of the self-willed Manmukh is fickle; he is very tricky and clever within. ਕੀਤਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਆ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ कीता करतिआ बिरथा गइआ इकु तिलु थाइ न पाई ॥ Keeṫaa karṫi▫aa birṫʰaa ga▫i▫aa ik ṫil ṫʰaa▫é na paa▫ee. Whatever he has done, and all that he does, is useless. Not even an iota of it is acceptable. ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਬੀਜਦੇ ਸਭ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਾਈ ॥ पुंन दानु जो बीजदे सभ धरम राइ कै जाई ॥ Punn ḋaan jo beejḋé sabʰ ḋʰaram raa▫é kæ jaa▫ee. The charity and generosity he pretends to give will be judged by the Righteous Judge of Dharma. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਈ ॥ बिनु सतिगुरू जमकालु न छोडई दूजै भाइ खुआई ॥ Bin saṫguroo jamkaal na chʰod▫ee ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é kʰu▫aa▫ee. Without the True Guru, the Messenger of Death does not leave the mortal alone; he is ruined by the love of duality. ਜੋਬਨੁ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਜਰੁ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥ जोबनु जांदा नदरि न आवई जरु पहुचै मरि जाई ॥ Joban jaaⁿḋaa naḋar na aavee jar pahuchæ mar jaa▫ee. Youth slips away imperceptibly, old age comes, and then he dies. ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਬੇਲੀ ਕੋ ਨ ਸਖਾਈ ॥ पुतु कलतु मोहु हेतु है अंति बेली को न सखाई ॥ Puṫ kalaṫ moh héṫ hæ anṫ bélee ko na sakʰaa▫ee. The mortal is caught in love and emotional attachment to children and spouse, but none of them will be his helper and support in the end. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਉ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥ सतिगुरु सेवे सो सुखु पाए नाउ वसै मनि आई ॥ Saṫgur sévé so sukʰ paa▫é naa▫o vasæ man aa▫ee. Whoever serves the True Guru finds peace; the Name comes to abide in the mind. ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਵਡੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧੯॥ नानक से वडे वडभागी जि गुरमुखि नामि समाई ॥१९॥ Naanak sé vadé vadbʰaagee jė gurmukʰ naam samaa▫ee. ||19|| O Nanak! Great and very fortunate are those who, as Gurmukh, are absorbed in the Naam. ||19|| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖ ਰੋਇ ॥ मनमुख नामु न चेतनी बिनु नावै दुख रोइ ॥ Manmukʰ naam na chéṫnee bin naavæ ḋukʰ ro▫é. The self-willed Manmukhs do not even think of the Name; without the Name, they cry in pain. ਆਤਮਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਪੂਜਨੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ आतमा रामु न पूजनी दूजै किउ सुखु होइ ॥ Aaṫmaa raam na poojnee ḋoojæ ki▫o sukʰ ho▫é. They do not worship the Lord, the Supreme Soul; how can they find peace in duality? ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਾਢਹਿ ਧੋਇ ॥ हउमै अंतरि मैलु है सबदि न काढहि धोइ ॥ Ha▫umæ anṫar mæl hæ sabaḋ na kaadʰėh ḋʰo▫é. They are filled with the filth of egotism; they do not wash it away with the Word of the Shabad. ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈਲਿਆ ਮੁਏ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੨੦॥ नानक बिनु नावै मैलिआ मुए जनमु पदारथु खोइ ॥२०॥ Naanak bin naavæ mæli▫aa mu▫é janam paḋaaraṫʰ kʰo▫é. ||20|| O Nanak! Without the Name, they die in their filth; they waste the priceless opportunity of this human life. ||20|| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੋਲੇ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ मनमुख बोले अंधुले तिसु महि अगनी का वासु ॥ Manmukʰ bolé anḋʰulé ṫis mėh agnee kaa vaas. The self-willed Manmukhs are deaf and blind; they are filled with the fire of desire. ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਬੁਝਨੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ बाणी सुरति न बुझनी सबदि न करहि प्रगासु ॥ Baṇee suraṫ na bujʰnee sabaḋ na karahi pargaas. They have no intuitive understanding of the Guru’s Bani; they are not illuminated with the Shabad. ਓਨਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੁਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨਿ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਿਸਾਸੁ ॥ ओना आपणी अंदरि सुधि नही गुर बचनि न करहि विसासु ॥ Onaa aapṇee anḋar suḋʰ nahee gur bachan na karahi visaas. They do not know their own inner being, and they have no faith in the Guru’s Word. ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ ॥ गिआनीआ अंदरि गुर सबदु है नित हरि लिव सदा विगासु ॥ Gi▫aanee▫aa anḋar gur sabaḋ hæ niṫ har liv saḋaa vigaas. The Word of the Guru’s Shabad is within the being of the spiritually wise ones. They always blossom in His love. ਹਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਕੀ ਰਖਦਾ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਾਸੁ ॥ हरि गिआनीआ की रखदा हउ सद बलिहारी तासु ॥ Har gi▫aanee▫aa kee rakʰ▫ḋaa ha▫o saḋ balihaaree ṫaas. The Lord saves the honor of the spiritually wise ones. I am forever a sacrifice to them. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ॥੨੧॥ गुरमुखि जो हरि सेवदे जन नानकु ता का दासु ॥२१॥ Gurmukʰ jo har sévḋé jan Naanak ṫaa kaa ḋaas. ||21|| Servant Nanak is the slave of those Gurmukhs who serve the Lord. ||21|| ਮਾਇਆ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮੁ ਸਰਪੁ ਹੈ ਜਗੁ ਘੇਰਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇ ॥ माइआ भुइअंगमु सरपु है जगु घेरिआ बिखु माइ ॥ Maa▫i▫aa bʰu▫i▫angam sarap hæ jag gʰéri▫aa bikʰ maa▫é. The poisonous snake, the serpent of Maya, has surrounded the world with its coils, O mother! ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਗਰੁੜ ਸਬਦੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ बिखु का मारणु हरि नामु है गुर गरुड़ सबदु मुखि पाइ ॥ Bikʰ kaa maaraṇ har naam hæ gur garuṛ sabaḋ mukʰ paa▫é. The antidote to this poisonous venom is the Name of the Lord; the Guru places the magic spell of the Shabad into the mouth. ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਆਇ ॥ जिन कउ पूरबि लिखिआ तिन सतिगुरु मिलिआ आइ ॥ Jin ka▫o poorab likʰi▫aa ṫin saṫgur mili▫aa aa▫é. Those who are blessed with such preordained destiny come and meet the True Guru. ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਲਾਇ ॥ मिलि सतिगुर निरमलु होइआ बिखु हउमै गइआ बिलाइ ॥ Mil saṫgur nirmal ho▫i▫aa bikʰ ha▫umæ ga▫i▫aa bilaa▫é. Meeting with the True Guru, they become immaculate, and the poison of egotism is eradicated. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇ ॥ गुरमुखा के मुख उजले हरि दरगह सोभा पाइ ॥ Gurmukʰaa ké mukʰ ujlé har ḋargėh sobʰaa paa▫é. Radiant and bright are the faces of the Gurmukhs; they are honored in the Court of the Lord. ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ਤਿਨ ਜੋ ਚਾਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੨੨॥ जन नानकु सदा कुरबाणु तिन जो चालहि सतिगुर भाइ ॥२२॥ Jan Naanak saḋaa kurbaaṇ ṫin jo chaalėh saṫgur bʰaa▫é. ||22|| Servant Nanak is forever a sacrifice to those who walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||22|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥ सतिगुर पुरखु निरवैरु है नित हिरदै हरि लिव लाइ ॥ Saṫgur purakʰ nirvær hæ niṫ hirḋæ har liv laa▫é. The True Guru, the Primal Being, has no hatred or vengeance. His heart is constantly attuned to the Lord. ਨਿਰਵੈਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਰਚਾਇਦਾ ਅਪਣੈ ਘਰਿ ਲੂਕੀ ਲਾਇ ॥ निरवैरै नालि वैरु रचाइदा अपणै घरि लूकी लाइ ॥ Nirværæ naal vær rachaa▫iḋaa apṇæ gʰar lookee laa▫é. Whoever directs hatred against the Guru, who has no hatred at all, only sets his own home on fire. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥ अंतरि क्रोधु अहंकारु है अनदिनु जलै सदा दुखु पाइ ॥ Anṫar kroḋʰ ahaⁿkaar hæ an▫ḋin jalæ saḋaa ḋukʰ paa▫é. Anger and egotism are within him night and day; he burns, and suffers constant pain. ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਨਿਤ ਭਉਕਦੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ कूड़ु बोलि बोलि नित भउकदे बिखु खाधे दूजै भाइ ॥ Kooṛ bol bol niṫ bʰa▫ukḋé bikʰ kʰaaḋʰé ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é. They babble and tell lies, and keep on barking, eating the poison of the love of duality. ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥ बिखु माइआ कारणि भरमदे फिरि घरि घरि पति गवाइ ॥ Bikʰ maa▫i▫aa kaaraṇ bʰaramḋé fir gʰar gʰar paṫ gavaa▫é. For the sake of the poison of Maya, they wander from house to house, and lose their honor. ਬੇਸੁਆ ਕੇਰੇ ਪੂਤ ਜਿਉ ਪਿਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ बेसुआ केरे पूत जिउ पिता नामु तिसु जाइ ॥ Bésu▫aa kéré pooṫ ji▫o piṫaa naam ṫis jaa▫é. They are like the son of a prostitute, who does not know the name of his father. ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇ ॥ हरि हरि नामु न चेतनी करतै आपि खुआइ ॥ Har har naam na chéṫnee karṫæ aap kʰu▫aa▫é. They do not remember the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; the Creator Himself brings them to ruin. ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀਅਨੁ ਜਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥ हरि गुरमुखि किरपा धारीअनु जन विछुड़े आपि मिलाइ ॥ Har gurmukʰ kirpaa ḋʰaaree▫an jan vichʰuṛé aap milaa▫é. The Lord showers His Mercy upon the Gurmukhs, and reunites the separated ones with Himself. ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਲਾਗੇ ਪਾਇ ॥੨੩॥ जन नानकु तिसु बलिहारणै जो सतिगुर लागे पाइ ॥२३॥ Jan Naanak ṫis balihaarṇæ jo saṫgur laagé paa▫é. ||23|| Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to those who fall at the Feet of the True Guru. ||23|| ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਸੇ ਊਬਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ॥ नामि लगे से ऊबरे बिनु नावै जम पुरि जांहि ॥ Naam lagé sé oobré bin naavæ jam pur jaaⁿhi. Those who are attached to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are saved; without the Name, they must go to the City of Death. ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥੨੪॥ नानक बिनु नावै सुखु नही आइ गए पछुताहि ॥२४॥ Naanak bin naavæ sukʰ nahee aa▫é ga▫é pachʰuṫaahi. ||24|| O Nanak! Without the Name, they find no peace; they come and go in reincarnation with regrets. ||24|| ਚਿੰਤਾ ਧਾਵਤ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਤਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਅਨੰਦੁ ॥ चिंता धावत रहि गए तां मनि भइआ अनंदु ॥ Chinṫaa ḋʰaavaṫ rėh ga▫é ṫaaⁿ man bʰa▫i▫aa anand. When anxiety and wanderings come to an end, the mind becomes happy. ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਸੁਤੀ ਨਿਚਿੰਦ ॥ गुर प्रसादी बुझीऐ सा धन सुती निचिंद ॥ Gur parsaadee bujʰee▫æ saa ḋʰan suṫee nichinḋ. By Guru’s Grace, the soul-bride understands, and then she sleeps without worry. ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ॥ जिन कउ पूरबि लिखिआ तिन्हा भेटिआ गुर गोविंदु ॥ Jin ka▫o poorab likʰi▫aa ṫinĥaa bʰéti▫aa gur govinḋ. Those who have such preordained destiny meet with the Guru, the Lord of the Universe. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥੨੫॥ नानक सहजे मिलि रहे हरि पाइआ परमानंदु ॥२५॥ Naanak sėhjé mil rahé har paa▫i▫aa parmaananḋ. ||25|| O Nanak! They merge intuitively into the Lord, the Embodiment of Supreme Bliss. ||25|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ सतिगुरु सेवनि आपणा गुर सबदी वीचारि ॥ Saṫgur sévan aapṇaa gur sabḋee veechaar. Those who serve their True Guru, who contemplate the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖਹਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ सतिगुर का भाणा मंनि लैनि हरि नामु रखहि उर धारि ॥ Saṫgur kaa bʰaaṇaa man læn har naam rakʰėh ur ḋʰaar. who honor and obey the Will of the True Guru, who keep the Lord’s Name enshrined within their hearts, ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ॥ ऐथै ओथै मंनीअनि हरि नामि लगे वापारि ॥ Æṫʰæ oṫʰæ mannee▫an har naam lagé vaapaar. are honored, here and hereafter; they are dedicated to the business of the Lord’s Name. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪਦੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥ गुरमुखि सबदि सिञापदे तितु साचै दरबारि ॥ Gurmukʰ sabaḋ siñaapaḋæ ṫiṫ saachæ ḋarbaar. Through the Word of the Shabad, the Gurmukhs gain recognition in that Court of the True Lord. ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਖਰਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਿਰਮੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ सचा सउदा खरचु सचु अंतरि पिरमु पिआरु ॥ Sachaa sa▫uḋaa kʰarach sach anṫar piram pi▫aar.
