ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ महला १ ॥ Mėhlā 1. First Mehl: ਉਤੰਗੀ ਪੈਓਹਰੀ ਗਹਿਰੀ ਗੰਭੀਰੀ ॥ उतंगी पैओहरी गहिरी ग्मभीरी ॥ Uṯangī pai▫ohrī gahirī gambẖīrī. O you with swollen breasts, let your consciousness become deep and profound. ਸਸੁੜਿ ਸੁਹੀਆ ਕਿਵ ਕਰੀ ਨਿਵਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਥਣੀ ॥ ससुड़ि सुहीआ किव करी निवणु न जाइ थणी ॥ Sasuṛ suhī▫ā kiv karī nivaṇ na jā▫e thaṇī. O mother-in-law, how can I bow? Because of my stiff nipples, I cannot bow. ਗਚੁ ਜਿ ਲਗਾ ਗਿੜਵੜੀ ਸਖੀਏ ਧਉਲਹਰੀ ॥ गचु जि लगा गिड़वड़ी सखीए धउलहरी ॥ Gacẖ jė lagā girvaṛī sakẖī▫e ḏẖa▫ulharī. O sister, those mansions built as high as mountains - ਸੇ ਭੀ ਢਹਦੇ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਮੁੰਧ ਨ ਗਰਬੁ ਥਣੀ ॥੧॥ से भी ढहदे डिठु मै मुंध न गरबु थणी ॥१॥ Se bẖī dẖahḏe diṯẖ mai munḏẖ na garab thaṇī. ||1|| I have seen them come crumbling down. O bride, do not be so proud of your nipples. ||1|| ਸੁਣਿ ਮੁੰਧੇ ਹਰਣਾਖੀਏ ਗੂੜਾ ਵੈਣੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥ सुणि मुंधे हरणाखीए गूड़ा वैणु अपारु ॥ Suṇ munḏẖe harṇākẖī▫e gūṛā vaiṇ apār. O bride with deer-like eyes, listen to the words of deep and infinite wisdom. ਪਹਿਲਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਿਞਾਣਿ ਕੈ ਤਾਂ ਕੀਚੈ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥ पहिला वसतु सिञाणि कै तां कीचै वापारु ॥ Pahilā vasaṯ siñāṇ kai ṯāʼn kīcẖai vāpār. First, examine the merchandise, and then, make the deal. ਦੋਹੀ ਦਿਚੈ ਦੁਰਜਨਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਕੂੰ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥ दोही दिचै दुरजना मित्रां कूं जैकारु ॥ Ḏohī ḏicẖai ḏurjanā miṯrāʼn kūʼn jaikār. Proclaim that you will not associate with evil people; celebrate victory with your friends. ਜਿਤੁ ਦੋਹੀ ਸਜਣ ਮਿਲਨਿ ਲਹੁ ਮੁੰਧੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ जितु दोही सजण मिलनि लहु मुंधे वीचारु ॥ Jiṯ ḏohī sajaṇ milan lahu munḏẖe vīcẖār. This proclamation, to meet with your friends, O bride - give it some thought. ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਜਣਾ ਐਸਾ ਹਸਣੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ तनु मनु दीजै सजणा ऐसा हसणु सारु ॥ Ŧan man ḏījai sajṇā aisā hasaṇ sār. Surrender mind and body to the Lord your Friend; this is the most excellent pleasure. ਤਿਸ ਸਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਕੀਚਈ ਜਿ ਦਿਸੈ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ तिस सउ नेहु न कीचई जि दिसै चलणहारु ॥ Ŧis sa▫o nehu na kīcẖ▫ī jė ḏisai cẖalaṇhār. Do not fall in love with one who is destined to leave. ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਇਵ ਕਰਿ ਬੁਝਿਆ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੨॥ नानक जिन्ही इव करि बुझिआ तिन्हा विटहु कुरबाणु ॥२॥ Nānak jinĥī iv kar bujẖi▫ā ṯinĥā vitahu kurbāṇ. ||2|| O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to those who understand this. ||2|| ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਤਾਰੂ ਪਾਣਿ ਤਾਹੂ ਪੁਛੁ ਤਿੜੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਲ ॥ जे तूं तारू पाणि ताहू पुछु तिड़ंन्ह कल ॥ Je ṯūʼn ṯārū pāṇ ṯāhū pucẖẖ ṯiṛĥaʼn▫nĥ kal. If you wish to swim across the water, then consult those who know how to swim. ਤਾਹੂ ਖਰੇ ਸੁਜਾਣ ਵੰਞਾ ਏਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਕਪਰੀ ॥੩॥ ताहू खरे सुजाण वंञा एन्ही कपरी ॥३॥ Ŧāhū kẖare sujāṇ vañā enĥī kaprī. ||3|| Those who have survived these treacherous waves are very wise. ||3|| ਝੜ ਝਖੜ ਓਹਾੜ ਲਹਰੀ ਵਹਨਿ ਲਖੇਸਰੀ ॥ झड़ झखड़ ओहाड़ लहरी वहनि लखेसरी ॥ Jẖaṛ jẖakẖaṛ ohāṛ lahrī vahan lakẖesarī. The storm rages and the rain floods the land; thousands of waves rise and surge. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਆਲਾਇ ਬੇੜੇ ਡੁਬਣਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਉ ॥੪॥ सतिगुर सिउ आलाइ बेड़े डुबणि नाहि भउ ॥४॥ Saṯgur si▫o ālā▫e beṛe dubaṇ nāhi bẖa▫o. ||4|| If you cry out for help from the True Guru, you have nothing to fear - your boat will not sink. ||4|| ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੈਸੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ नानक दुनीआ कैसी होई ॥ Nānak ḏunī▫ā kaisī ho▫ī. O Nanak, what has happened to the world? ਸਾਲਕੁ ਮਿਤੁ ਨ ਰਹਿਓ ਕੋਈ ॥ सालकु मितु न रहिओ कोई ॥ Sālak miṯ na rahi▫o ko▫ī. There is no guide or friend. ਭਾਈ ਬੰਧੀ ਹੇਤੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥ भाई बंधी हेतु चुकाइआ ॥ Bẖā▫ī banḏẖī heṯ cẖukā▫i▫ā. There is no love, even among brothers and relatives. ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਦੀਨੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ दुनीआ कारणि दीनु गवाइआ ॥५॥ Ḏunī▫ā kāraṇ ḏīn gavā▫i▫ā. ||5|| For the sake of the world, people have lost their faith. ||5|| ਹੈ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਓਹਿ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥ है है करि कै ओहि करेनि ॥ Hai hai kar kai ohi karen. They cry and weep and wail. ਗਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਪਿਟਨਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਖੋਹੇਨਿ ॥ गल्हा पिटनि सिरु खोहेनि ॥ Galĥā pitan sir kẖohen. They slap their faces and pull their hair out. ਨਾਉ ਲੈਨਿ ਅਰੁ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ नाउ लैनि अरु करनि समाइ ॥ Nā▫o lain ar karan samā▫e. But if they chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they shall be absorbed into it. ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥ नानक तिन बलिहारै जाइ ॥६॥ Nānak ṯin balihārai jā▫e. ||6|| O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to them. ||6|| ਰੇ ਮਨ ਡੀਗਿ ਨ ਡੋਲੀਐ ਸੀਧੈ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਧਾਉ ॥ रे मन डीगि न डोलीऐ सीधै मारगि धाउ ॥ Re man dīg na dolī▫ai sīḏẖai mārag ḏẖā▫o. O my mind, do not waver or walk on the crooked path; take the straight and true path. ਪਾਛੈ ਬਾਘੁ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਆਗੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਲਾਉ ॥ पाछै बाघु डरावणो आगै अगनि तलाउ ॥ Pācẖẖai bāgẖ darāvṇo āgai agan ṯalā▫o. The terrible tiger is behind you, and the pool of fire is ahead. ਸਹਸੈ ਜੀਅਰਾ ਪਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਮਾ ਕਉ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਢੰਗੁ ॥ सहसै जीअरा परि रहिओ मा कउ अवरु न ढंगु ॥ Sahsai jī▫arā par rahi▫o mā ka▫o avar na dẖang. My soul is skeptical and doubtful, but I cannot see any other way to go. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ॥੭॥ नानक गुरमुखि छुटीऐ हरि प्रीतम सिउ संगु ॥७॥ Nānak gurmukẖ cẖẖutī▫ai har parīṯam si▫o sang. ||7|| O Nanak, as Gurmukh, dwell with your Beloved Lord, and you shall be saved. ||7|| ਬਾਘੁ ਮਰੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥ बाघु मरै मनु मारीऐ जिसु सतिगुर दीखिआ होइ ॥ Bāgẖ marai man mārī▫ai jis saṯgur ḏīkẖi▫ā ho▫e. The tiger is killed, and the mind is killed, through the Teachings of the True Guru. ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ आपु पछाणै हरि मिलै बहुड़ि न मरणा होइ ॥ Āp pacẖẖāṇai har milai bahuṛ na marṇā ho▫e. One who understands himself, meets with the Lord, and never dies again. ਕੀਚੜਿ ਹਾਥੁ ਨ ਬੂਡਈ ਏਕਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥ कीचड़ि हाथु न बूडई एका नदरि निहालि ॥ Kīcẖaṛ hāth na būd▫ī ekā naḏar nihāl. One who sees the One and Only Lord with his eyes - his hands shall not get muddy and dirty. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਸਚੀ ਪਾਲਿ ॥੮॥ नानक गुरमुखि उबरे गुरु सरवरु सची पालि ॥८॥ Nānak gurmukẖ ubre gur sarvar sacẖī pāl. ||8|| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved; the Guru has surrounded the ocean with the embankment of Truth. ||8|| ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲੁ ਲੋੜਿ ਲਹੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਲੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ अगनि मरै जलु लोड़ि लहु विणु गुर निधि जलु नाहि ॥ Agan marai jal loṛ lahu viṇ gur niḏẖ jal nāhi. If you wish to put out the fire, then look for water; without the Guru, the ocean of water is not found. ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ जनमि मरै भरमाईऐ जे लख करम कमाहि ॥ Janam marai bẖarmā▫ī▫ai je lakẖ karam kamāhi. You shall continue to wander lost in reincarnation through birth and death, even if you do thousands of other deeds. ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥ जमु जागाति न लगई जे चलै सतिगुर भाइ ॥ Jam jāgāṯ na lag▫ī je cẖalai saṯgur bẖā▫e. But you shall not be taxed by the Messenger of Death, if you walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਮਰ ਪਦੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੈ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥੯॥ नानक निरमलु अमर पदु गुरु हरि मेलै मेलाइ ॥९॥ Nānak nirmal amar paḏ gur har melai melā▫e. ||9|| O Nanak, the immaculate, immortal status is obtained, and the Guru will unite you in the Lord's Union. ||9|| ਕਲਰ ਕੇਰੀ ਛਪੜੀ ਕਊਆ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ कलर केरी छपड़ी कऊआ मलि मलि नाइ ॥ Kalar kerī cẖẖapṛī ka▫ū▫ā mal mal nā▫e. The crow rubs and washes itself in the mud puddle. ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਅਵਗੁਣੀ ਚਿੰਜੁ ਭਰੀ ਗੰਧੀ ਆਇ ॥ मनु तनु मैला अवगुणी चिंजु भरी गंधी आइ ॥ Man ṯan mailā avguṇī binn bẖarī ganḏẖī ā▫e. Its mind and body are polluted with its own mistakes and demerits, and its beak is filled with dirt. ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹੰਸਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਕਾਗ ਕੁਪੰਖੀ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ सरवरु हंसि न जाणिआ काग कुपंखी संगि ॥ Sarvar hans na jāṇi▫ā kāg kupankẖī sang. The swan in the pool associated with the crow, not knowing that it was evil. ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ साकत सिउ ऐसी प्रीति है बूझहु गिआनी रंगि ॥ Sākaṯ si▫o aisī parīṯ hai būjẖhu gi▫ānī rang. Such is the love of the faithless cynic; understand this, O spiritually wise ones, through love and devotion. ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥ संत सभा जैकारु करि गुरमुखि करम कमाउ ॥ Sanṯ sabẖā jaikār kar gurmukẖ karam kamā▫o. So proclaim the victory of the Society of the Saints, and act as Gurmukh. ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਵਣੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਦਰੀਆਉ ॥੧੦॥ निरमलु न्हावणु नानका गुरु तीरथु दरीआउ ॥१०॥ Nirmal nĥāvaṇ nānkā gur ṯirath ḏarī▫ā▫o. ||10|| Immaculate and pure is that cleansing bath, O Nanak, at the sacred shrine of the Guru's river. ||10|| ਜਨਮੇ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ ਜਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਉ ॥ जनमे का फलु किआ गणी जां हरि भगति न भाउ ॥ Janme kā fal ki▫ā gaṇī jāʼn har bẖagaṯ na bẖā▫o. What should I account as the rewards of this human life, if one does not feel love and devotion to the Lord? ਪੈਧਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥ पैधा खाधा बादि है जां मनि दूजा भाउ ॥ Paiḏẖā kẖāḏẖā bāḏ hai jāʼn man ḏūjā bẖā▫o. Wearing clothes and eating food is useless, if the mind is filled with the love of duality. ਵੇਖਣੁ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਹੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠਾ ਆਲਾਉ ॥ वेखणु सुनणा झूठु है मुखि झूठा आलाउ ॥ vekẖaṇ sunṇā jẖūṯẖ hai mukẖ jẖūṯẖā ālā▫o. Seeing and hearing is false, if one speaks lies. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂ ਹੋਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧੧॥ नानक नामु सलाहि तू होरु हउमै आवउ जाउ ॥११॥ Nānak nām salāhi ṯū hor ha▫umai āva▫o jā▫o. ||11|| O Nanak, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord; everything else is coming and going in egotism. ||11|| ਹੈਨਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਣੇ ਫੈਲ ਫਕੜੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੧੨॥ हैनि विरले नाही घणे फैल फकड़ु संसारु ॥१२॥ Hain virle nāhī gẖaṇe fail fakaṛ sansār. ||12|| The Saints are few and far between; everything else in the world is just a pompous show. ||12|| ਨਾਨਕ ਲਗੀ ਤੁਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਜੀਵਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾਣੁ ॥ नानक लगी तुरि मरै जीवण नाही ताणु ॥ Nānak lagī ṯur marai jīvaṇ nāhī ṯāṇ. O Nanak, one who is struck by the Lord dies instantaneously; the power to live is lost. ਚੋਟੈ ਸੇਤੀ ਜੋ ਮਰੈ ਲਗੀ ਸਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ चोटै सेती जो मरै लगी सा परवाणु ॥ Cẖotai seṯī jo marai lagī sā parvāṇ. If someone dies by such a stroke, then he is accepted. ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਗੈ ਲਗੀ ਤਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ जिस नो लाए तिसु लगै लगी ता परवाणु ॥ Jis no lā▫e ṯis lagai lagī ṯā parvāṇ. He alone is struck, who is struck by the Lord; after such a stroke, he is approved. ਪਿਰਮ ਪੈਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ॥੧੩॥ पिरम पैकामु न निकलै लाइआ तिनि सुजाणि ॥१३॥ Piram paikām na niklai lā▫i▫ā ṯin sujāṇ. ||13|| The arrow of love, shot by the All-knowing Lord, cannot be pulled out. ||13|| ਭਾਂਡਾ ਧੋਵੈ ਕਉਣੁ ਜਿ ਕਚਾ ਸਾਜਿਆ ॥ भांडा धोवै कउणु जि कचा साजिआ ॥ Bẖāʼndā ḏẖovai ka▫uṇ jė kacẖā sāji▫ā. Who can wash the unbaked clay pot? ਧਾਤੂ ਪੰਜਿ ਰਲਾਇ ਕੂੜਾ ਪਾਜਿਆ ॥ धातू पंजि रलाइ कूड़ा पाजिआ ॥ Ḏẖāṯū panj ralā▫e kūṛā pāji▫ā. Joining the five elements together, the Lord made a false cover. ਭਾਂਡਾ ਆਣਗੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਜਾਂ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥ भांडा आणगु रासि जां तिसु भावसी ॥ Bẖāʼndā āṇag rās jāʼn ṯis bẖāvsī. When it pleases Him, He makes it right. ਪਰਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਾਗਾਇ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਵਸੀ ॥੧੪॥ परम जोति जागाइ वाजा वावसी ॥१४॥ Param joṯ jāgā▫e vājā vāvsī. ||14|| The supreme light shines forth, and the celestial song vibrates and resounds. ||14|| ਮਨਹੁ ਜਿ ਅੰਧੇ ਘੂਪ ਕਹਿਆ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ॥ मनहु जि अंधे घूप कहिआ बिरदु न जाणनी ॥ Manhu jė anḏẖe gẖūp kahi▫ā biraḏ na jāṇnī. Those who are totally blind in their minds, do not have the integrity to keep their word. ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਊਂਧੈ ਕਵਲ ਦਿਸਨਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੂਪ ॥ मनि अंधै ऊंधै कवल दिसनि खरे करूप ॥ Man anḏẖai ūʼnḏẖai kaval ḏisan kẖare karūp. With their blind minds, and their upside-down heart-lotus, they look totally ugly. ਇਕਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੁਝਨਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥ इकि कहि जाणनि कहिआ बुझनि ते नर सुघड़ सरूप ॥ Ik kahi jāṇan kahi▫ā bujẖan ṯe nar sugẖaṛ sarūp. Some know how to speak and understand what they are told. Those people are wise and good-looking. ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਦੁ ਨ ਬੇਦੁ ਨ ਗੀਅ ਰਸੁ ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਤਿ ॥ इकना नादु न बेदु न गीअ रसु रसु कसु न जाणंति ॥ Iknā nāḏ na beḏ na gī▫a ras ras kas na jāṇanṯ. Some do not know the Sound-current of the Naad, spiritual wisdom or the joy of song. They do not even understand good and bad. ਇਕਨਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਸਰ ਅਖਰ ਕਾ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਲਹੰਤਿ ॥ इकना सिधि न बुधि न अकलि सर अखर का भेउ न लहंति ॥ Iknā siḏẖ na buḏẖ na akal sar akẖar kā bẖe▫o na lāhanṯ. Some have no idea of perfection, wisdom or understanding; they know nothing about the mystery of the Word. ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਅਸਲਿ ਖਰ ਜਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੰਤ ॥੧੫॥ नानक ते नर असलि खर जि बिनु गुण गरबु करंत ॥१५॥ Nānak ṯe nar asal kẖar jė bin guṇ garab karanṯ. ||15|| O Nanak, those people are really donkeys; they have no virtue or merit, but still, they are very proud. ||15|| ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੁ ਜੋ ਬਿੰਦੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥ सो ब्रहमणु जो बिंदै ब्रहमु ॥ So barahmaṇ jo binḏai barahm. He alone is a Brahmin, who knows God. ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕਰਮੁ ॥ जपु तपु संजमु कमावै करमु ॥ Jap ṯap sanjam kamāvai karam. He chants and meditates, and practices austerity and good deeds. ਸੀਲ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਰਖੈ ਧਰਮੁ ॥ सील संतोख का रखै धरमु ॥ Sīl sanṯokẖ kā rakẖai ḏẖaram. He keeps to the Dharma, with faith, humility and contentment. ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਕਤੁ ॥ बंधन तोड़ै होवै मुकतु ॥ Banḏẖan ṯoṛai hovai mukaṯ. Breaking his bonds, he is liberated. ਸੋਈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੁ ਪੂਜਣ ਜੁਗਤੁ ॥੧੬॥ सोई ब्रहमणु पूजण जुगतु ॥१६॥ So▫ī barahmaṇ pūjaṇ jugaṯ. ||16|| Such a Brahmin is worthy of being worshipped. ||16|| ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੋ ਜੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਾ ਸੂਰੁ ॥ खत्री सो जु करमा का सूरु ॥ Kẖaṯrī so jo karmā kā sūr. He alone is a Kshatriya, who is a hero in good deeds. ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਾ ਕਰੈ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥ पुंन दान का करै सरीरु ॥ Punn ḏān kā karai sarīr. He uses his body to give in charity; ਖੇਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੀਜੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ खेतु पछाणै बीजै दानु ॥ Kẖeṯ pacẖẖāṇai bījai ḏān. he understands his farm, and plants the seeds of generosity. ਸੋ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ सो खत्री दरगह परवाणु ॥ So kẖaṯrī ḏargėh parvāṇ. Such a Kshatriya is accepted in the Court of the Lord. ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਜੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ लबु लोभु जे कूड़ु कमावै ॥ Lab lobẖ je kūṛ kamāvai. Whoever practices greed, possessiveness and falsehood, ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧੭॥ अपणा कीता आपे पावै ॥१७॥ Apṇā kīṯā āpe pāvai. ||17|| shall receive the fruits of his own labors. ||17|| ਤਨੁ ਨ ਤਪਾਇ ਤਨੂਰ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਣੁ ਹਡ ਨ ਬਾਲਿ ॥ तनु न तपाइ तनूर जिउ बालणु हड न बालि ॥ Ŧan na ṯapā▫e ṯanūr ji▫o bālaṇ had na bāl. Do not heat your body like a furnace, or burn your bones like firewood. ਸਿਰਿ ਪੈਰੀ ਕਿਆ ਫੇੜਿਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਿਰੀ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥੧੮॥ सिरि पैरी किआ फेड़िआ अंदरि पिरी सम्हालि ॥१८॥ Sir pairī ki▫ā feṛi▫ā anḏar pirī samĥāl. ||18|| What have your head and feet done wrong? See your Husband Lord within yourself. ||18|| ਸਭਨੀ ਘਟੀ ਸਹੁ ਵਸੈ ਸਹ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਟੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ सभनी घटी सहु वसै सह बिनु घटु न कोइ ॥ Sabẖnī gẖatī saho vasai sah bin gẖat na ko▫e. God the Cosmic Husband dwells within all hearts; without Him, there is no heart at all. ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧੯॥ नानक ते सोहागणी जिन्हा गुरमुखि परगटु होइ ॥१९॥ Nānak ṯe sohāgaṇī jinĥā gurmukẖ pargat ho▫e. ||19|| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are the happy, virtuous soul-brides; the Lord is revealed to them. ||19|| ਜਉ ਤਉ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਖੇਲਣ ਕਾ ਚਾਉ ॥ जउ तउ प्रेम खेलण का चाउ ॥ Ja▫o ṯa▫o parem kẖelaṇ kā cẖā▫o. If you desire to play this game of love with Me, ਸਿਰੁ ਧਰਿ ਤਲੀ ਗਲੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਉ ॥ सिरु धरि तली गली मेरी आउ ॥ Sir ḏẖar ṯalī galī merī ā▫o. then step onto My Path with your head in hand. ਇਤੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪੈਰੁ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥ इतु मारगि पैरु धरीजै ॥ Iṯ mārag pair ḏẖarījai. When you place your feet on this Path, ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੨੦॥ सिरु दीजै काणि न कीजै ॥२०॥ Sir ḏījai kāṇ na kījai. ||20|| give Me your head, and do not pay any attention to public opinion. ||20|| ਨਾਲਿ ਕਿਰਾੜਾ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਇ ॥ नालि किराड़ा दोसती कूड़ै कूड़ी पाइ ॥ Nāl kirāṛā ḏosṯī kūrhai kūṛī pā▫e. False is friendship with the false and greedy. False is its foundation. ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਮੂਲਿਆ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਤੈ ਥਾਇ ॥੨੧॥ मरणु न जापै मूलिआ आवै कितै थाइ ॥२१॥ Maraṇ na jāpai mūli▫ā āvai kiṯai thā▫e. ||21|| O Moollah, no one knows where death shall strike. ||21|| ਗਿਆਨ ਹੀਣੰ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ गिआन हीणं अगिआन पूजा ॥ Gi▫ān hīṇaʼn agi▫ān pūjā. Without spiritual wisdom, the people worship ignorance. ਅੰਧ ਵਰਤਾਵਾ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨੨॥ अंध वरतावा भाउ दूजा ॥२२॥ Anḏẖ varṯāvā bẖā▫o ḏūjā. ||22|| They grope in the darkness, in the love of duality. ||22|| ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ गुर बिनु गिआनु धरम बिनु धिआनु ॥ Gur bin gi▫ān ḏẖaram bin ḏẖi▫ān. Without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom; without Dharma, there is no meditation. ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਖੀ ਮੂਲੋ ਨ ਬਾਕੀ ॥੨੩॥ सच बिनु साखी मूलो न बाकी ॥२३॥ Sacẖ bin sākẖī mūlo na bākī. ||23|| Without Truth, there is no credit; without capital, there is no balance. ||23|| ਮਾਣੂ ਘਲੈ ਉਠੀ ਚਲੈ ॥ माणू घलै उठी चलै ॥ Māṇū gẖalai uṯẖī cẖalai. The mortals are sent into the world; then, they arise and depart. ਸਾਦੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਵੇਹੀ ਗਲੈ ॥੨੪॥ सादु नाही इवेही गलै ॥२४॥ Sāḏ nāhī ivehī galai. ||24|| There is no joy in this. ||24|| ਰਾਮੁ ਝੁਰੈ ਦਲ ਮੇਲਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਲੁ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ ॥ रामु झुरै दल मेलवै अंतरि बलु अधिकार ॥ Rām jẖurai ḏal melvai anṯar bal aḏẖikār. Raam Chand, sad at heart, assembled his army and forces. ਬੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਸੈਨਾ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਜੁਝੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥ बंतर की सैना सेवीऐ मनि तनि जुझु अपारु ॥ Banṯar kī sainā sevī▫ai man ṯan jujẖ apār. The army of monkeys was at his service; his mind and body became eager for war. ਸੀਤਾ ਲੈ ਗਇਆ ਦਹਸਿਰੋ ਲਛਮਣੁ ਮੂਓ ਸਰਾਪਿ ॥ सीता लै गइआ दहसिरो लछमणु मूओ सरापि ॥ Sīṯā lai ga▫i▫ā ḏėhsiro lacẖẖmaṇ mū▫o sarāp. Raawan captured his wife Sita, and Lachhman was cursed to die. ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥੨੫॥ नानक करता करणहारु करि वेखै थापि उथापि ॥२५॥ Nānak karṯā karanhār kar vekẖai thāp uthāp. ||25|| O Nanak, the Creator Lord is the Doer of all; He watches over all, and destroys what He has created. ||25|| ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਝੂਰੈ ਰਾਮਚੰਦੁ ਸੀਤਾ ਲਛਮਣ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ मन महि झूरै रामचंदु सीता लछमण जोगु ॥ Man mėh jẖūrai rāmcẖanḏ sīṯā lacẖẖmaṇ jog. In his mind, Raam Chand mourned for Sita and Lachhman. ਹਣਵੰਤਰੁ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਆਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥ हणवंतरु आराधिआ आइआ करि संजोगु ॥ Haṇvanṯar ārāḏẖi▫ā ā▫i▫ā kar sanjog. Then, he remembered Hanuman the monkey-god, who came to him. ਭੂਲਾ ਦੈਤੁ ਨ ਸਮਝਈ ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਏ ਕਾਮ ॥ भूला दैतु न समझई तिनि प्रभ कीए काम ॥ Bẖūlā ḏaiṯ na samjẖa▫ī ṯin parabẖ kī▫e kām. The misguided demon did not understand that God is the Doer of deeds. ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸੋ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਰਾਮ ॥੨੬॥ नानक वेपरवाहु सो किरतु न मिटई राम ॥२६॥ Nānak veparvāhu so kiraṯ na mit▫ī rām. ||26|| O Nanak, the actions of the Self-existent Lord cannot be erased. ||26|| ਲਾਹੌਰ ਸਹਰੁ ਜਹਰੁ ਕਹਰੁ ਸਵਾ ਪਹਰੁ ॥੨੭॥ लाहौर सहरु जहरु कहरु सवा पहरु ॥२७॥ Lāhour sahar jahar kahar savā pahar. ||27|| The city of Lahore suffered terrible destruction for four hours. ||27||
