ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਗਾਥਾ महला ५ गाथा Mėhlaa 5 gaaṫʰaa Fifth Mehl, Gaat’haa: ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥ Ik▫oaⁿkaar saṫgur parsaaḋ. One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: ਕਰਪੂਰ ਪੁਹਪ ਸੁਗੰਧਾ ਪਰਸ ਮਾਨੁਖੵ ਦੇਹੰ ਮਲੀਣੰ ॥ करपूर पुहप सुगंधा परस मानुख्य देहं मलीणं ॥ Karpoor puhap suganḋʰaa paras manukʰ▫y ḋéhaⁿ maleeṇaⁿ. Camphor, flowers and perfume become contaminated, by coming into contact with the human body. ਮਜਾ ਰੁਧਿਰ ਦ੍ਰੁਗੰਧਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਥਿ ਗਰਬੇਣ ਅਗੵਾਨਣੋ ॥੧॥ मजा रुधिर द्रुगंधा नानक अथि गरबेण अग्यानणो ॥१॥ Majaa ruḋʰir ḋaruganḋʰaa Naanak aṫʰ garbéṇ agyaanaṇo. ||1|| O Nanak! The ignorant one is proud of his foul-smelling marrow, blood and bones. ||1|| ਪਰਮਾਣੋ ਪਰਜੰਤ ਆਕਾਸਹ ਦੀਪ ਲੋਅ ਸਿਖੰਡਣਹ ॥ परमाणो परजंत आकासह दीप लोअ सिखंडणह ॥ Parmaaṇo parjanṫ aakaasėh ḋeep lo▫a sikʰandṇah. Even if the mortal could reduce himself to the size of an atom, and through the ethers, worlds and realms, ਗਛੇਣ ਨੈਣ ਭਾਰੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਧੂ ਨ ਸਿਧੵਤੇ ॥੨॥ गछेण नैण भारेण नानक बिना साधू न सिध्यते ॥२॥ Gachʰéṇ næṇ bʰaaréṇ Naanak binaa saaḋʰoo na siḋʰ▫yaṫæ. ||2|| shoot in the blink of an eye, O Nanak! Without the Holy Saint, he shall not be saved. ||2|| ਜਾਣੋ ਸਤਿ ਹੋਵੰਤੋ ਮਰਣੋ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਣ ਮਿਥਿਆ ॥ जाणो सति होवंतो मरणो द्रिसटेण मिथिआ ॥ Jaaṇo saṫ hovanṫo marṇo ḋaristéṇ miṫʰi▫aa. Know for sure that death will come; whatever is seen is false. ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਚਲੰਥੋ ਭਣੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ॥੩॥ कीरति साथि चलंथो भणंति नानक साध संगेण ॥३॥ Keeraṫ saaṫʰ chalanṫʰo bʰaṇanṫ Naanak saaḋʰ sangéṇ. ||3|| So, chant the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; this alone shall go along with you in the end. ||3|| ਮਾਯਾ ਚਿਤ ਭਰਮੇਣ ਇਸਟ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੇਖੁ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥ माया चित भरमेण इसट मित्रेखु बांधवह ॥ Maa▫yaa chiṫ bʰarméṇ isat miṫrékʰ baaⁿḋʰvah. The consciousness wanders lost in Maya, attached to friends and relatives. ਲਬਧੵੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਸਥਾਨੰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਭਜਣੰ ॥੪॥ लबध्यं साध संगेण नानक सुख असथानं गोपाल भजणं ॥४॥ Labḋʰa▫yaⁿ saaḋʰ sangéṇ Naanak sukʰ asṫʰaanaⁿ gopaal bʰajṇaⁿ. ||4|| Vibrating and meditating on the Lord of the Universe in the Saadh Sangat, O Nanak! The eternal place of rest is found. ||4|| ਮੈਲਾਗਰ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਿੰਮੁ ਬਿਰਖ ਸਿ ਚੰਦਨਹ ॥ मैलागर संगेण निंमु बिरख सि चंदनह ॥ Mælaagar sangéṇ néém birakʰ sė chandnah. The lowly nim tree, growing near the sandalwood tree, becomes just like the sandalwood tree. ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬਸੰਤੋ ਬਾਂਸੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਹੰ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਬੋਹਤੇ ॥੫॥ निकटि बसंतो बांसो नानक अहं बुधि न बोहते ॥५॥ Nikat basanṫo baaⁿso Naanak ahaⁿ buḋʰ na bohṫé. ||5|| But the bamboo tree, also growing near it, does not pick up its fragrance; it is too tall and proud. ||5|| ਗਾਥਾ ਗੁੰਫ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕਥੰ ਮਥੰ ਮਾਨ ਮਰਦਨਹ ॥ गाथा गु्मफ गोपाल कथं मथं मान मरदनह ॥ Gaaṫʰaa gunf gopaal kaṫʰaⁿ maṫʰaⁿ maan maraḋnėh. In this Gaat’haa, the Lord’s Sermon is woven; listening to it, pride is crushed. ਹਤੰ ਪੰਚ ਸਤ੍ਰੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਣਹ ॥੬॥ हतं पंच सत्रेण नानक हरि बाणे प्रहारणह ॥६॥ Haṫaⁿ panch saṫréṇ Naanak har baaṇé par▫haarṇėh. ||6|| The five enemies are killed, O Nanak! By shooting the Arrow of the Lord. ||6|| ਬਚਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੁਖ ਪੰਥਾ ਲਹੰਥਾ ਬਡ ਕਰਮਣਹ ॥ बचन साध सुख पंथा लहंथा बड करमणह ॥ Bachan saaḋʰ sukʰ panṫʰaa lahanṫʰaa bad karamṇėh. The Words of the Holy are the path of peace. They are obtained by good karma. ਰਹੰਤਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੇਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥੭॥ रहंता जनम मरणेन रमणं नानक हरि कीरतनह ॥७॥ Rahanṫaa janam marṇén ramṇaⁿ Naanak har keeraṫnėh. ||7|| O Nanak! The cycle of birth and death ends by singing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises. ||7|| ਪਤ੍ਰ ਭੁਰਿਜੇਣ ਝੜੀਯੰ ਨਹ ਜੜੀਅੰ ਪੇਡ ਸੰਪਤਾ ॥ पत्र भुरिजेण झड़ीयं नह जड़ीअं पेड स्मपता ॥ Paṫar bʰurijéṇ jʰaṛee▫yaⁿ nah jaṛee▫aⁿ péd sapanṫaa. When the leaves wither and fall, they cannot be attached to the branch again. ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣ ਬਿਖਮਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਹੰਤਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਬਾਸਰੋ ਰੈਣੀ ॥੮॥ नाम बिहूण बिखमता नानक बहंति जोनि बासरो रैणी ॥८॥ Naam bihooṇ bikʰmaṫaa Naanak bahanṫ jon baasro ræṇee. ||8|| Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O Nanak! There is misery and suffering. The mortal wanders in reincarnation day and night. ||8|| ਭਾਵਨੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਲਭੰਤੰ ਬਡ ਭਾਗਣਹ ॥ भावनी साध संगेण लभंतं बड भागणह ॥ Bʰaavnee saaḋʰ sangéṇ labʰaⁿṫaⁿ bad bʰaagṇah. One is blessed with love for the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, by great good fortune. ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਰਮਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹ ਬਿਆਪਣਹ ॥੯॥ हरि नाम गुण रमणं नानक संसार सागर नह बिआपणह ॥९॥ Har naam guṇ ramṇaⁿ Naanak sansaar saagar nah bi▫aapṇėh. ||9|| Whoever sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord’s Name, O Nanak! Is not affected by the world-ocean. ||9|| ਗਾਥਾ ਗੂੜ ਅਪਾਰੰ ਸਮਝਣੰ ਬਿਰਲਾ ਜਨਹ ॥ गाथा गूड़ अपारं समझणं बिरला जनह ॥ Gaaṫʰaa gooṛ apaaraⁿ samjʰaṇaⁿ birlaa janah. This Gaat’haa is profound and infinite; how rare are those who understand it. ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕਾਮ ਤਜਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਮਹ ॥੧੦॥ संसार काम तजणं नानक गोबिंद रमणं साध संगमह ॥१०॥ Sansaar kaam ṫajṇaⁿ Naanak gobinḋ ramṇaⁿ saaḋʰ sangmah. ||10|| They forsake sexual desire and worldly love, O Nanak! And praise the Lord in the Saadh Sangat. ||10|| ਸੁਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਧ ਬਚਨਾ ਕੋਟਿ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨਹ ॥ सुमंत्र साध बचना कोटि दोख बिनासनह ॥ Sumanṫar saaḋʰ bachnaa kot ḋokʰ binaasnėh. The Words of the Holy are the most sublime Mantra. They eradicate millions of sinful mistakes. ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਧੵਾਨੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਧਾਰਣਹ ॥੧੧॥ हरि चरण कमल ध्यानं नानक कुल समूह उधारणह ॥११॥ Har charaṇ kamal ḋʰa▫yaana Naanak kul samooh uḋʰaarṇėh. ||11|| Meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Lord, O Nanak! All one’s generations are saved. ||11|| ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੈਣਹ ਜੇਣ ਮਧੵ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥ सुंदर मंदर सैणह जेण मध्य हरि कीरतनह ॥ Sunḋar manḋar sæṇah jéṇ maḋʰ▫y har keeraṫnėh. That palace is beautiful, in which the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises is sung. ਮੁਕਤੇ ਰਮਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵੰ ਬਡ ਭਾਗਣਹ ॥੧੨॥ मुकते रमण गोबिंदह नानक लबध्यं बड भागणह ॥१२॥ Mukṫé ramaṇ gobinḋah Naanak labḋʰa▫yaⁿ bad bʰaagṇah. ||12|| Those who dwell on the Lord of the Universe are liberated. O Nanak! Only the most fortunate are so blessed. ||12|| ਹਰਿ ਲਬਧੋ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਮਿਤੋ ॥ हरि लबधो मित्र सुमितो ॥ Har labḋʰo miṫar sumiṫo. I have found the Lord, my Friend, my very Best Friend. ਬਿਦਾਰਣ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚਿਤੋ ॥ बिदारण कदे न चितो ॥ Biḋaaraṇ kaḋé na chiṫo. He shall never break my heart. ਜਾ ਕਾ ਅਸਥਲੁ ਤੋਲੁ ਅਮਿਤੋ ॥ जा का असथलु तोलु अमितो ॥ Jaa kaa asṫʰal ṫol amiṫo. His dwelling is eternal; His weight cannot be weighed. ਸੋੁਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਖਾ ਜੀਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਿਤੋ ॥੧੩॥ सुोई नानक सखा जीअ संगि कितो ॥१३॥ So▫ee Naanak sakʰaa jee▫a sang kiṫo. ||13|| Nanak has made Him the Friend of his soul. ||13|| ਅਪਜਸੰ ਮਿਟੰਤ ਸਤ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਹ ॥ अपजसं मिटंत सत पुत्रह ॥ Apjasaⁿ mitanṫ saṫ puṫrėh. one’s bad reputation is erased by a true son, ਸਿਮਰਤਬੵ ਰਿਦੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਣਹ ॥ सिमरतब्य रिदै गुर मंत्रणह ॥ Simarṫab▫y riḋæ gur manṫarṇėh. who meditates in his heart on the Guru’s Mantra. ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਅਚੁਤ ॥ प्रीतम भगवान अचुत ॥ Pareeṫam bʰagvaan achuṫ. The Beloved Eternal Lord God, ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤਾਰਣਹ ॥੧੪॥ नानक संसार सागर तारणह ॥१४॥ Naanak sansaar saagar ṫaarṇah. ||14|| O Nanak! Carries us across the world-ocean. ||14|| ਮਰਣੰ ਬਿਸਰਣੰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ॥ मरणं बिसरणं गोबिंदह ॥ Marṇaⁿ bisraṇaⁿ gobinḋah. It is death to forget the Lord of the Universe. ਜੀਵਣੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਧੵਾਵਣਹ ॥ जीवणं हरि नाम ध्यावणह ॥ Jeevaṇaⁿ har naam ḋʰa▫yaavaṇėh. It is life to meditate on the Name of the Lord. ਲਭਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ॥ लभणं साध संगेण ॥ Labʰ▫ṇaⁿ saaḋʰ sangéṇ. The Lord is found in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਣਹ ॥੧੫॥ नानक हरि पूरबि लिखणह ॥१५॥ Naanak har poorab likʰ▫ṇėh. ||15|| O Nanak! By preordained destiny. ||15|| ਦਸਨ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਭੁਯੰਗੰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਗਾਰੁੜੀ ਨਿਵਾਰੰ ॥ दसन बिहून भुयंगं मंत्रं गारुड़ी निवारं ॥ Ḋasan bihoon bʰu▫yaaⁿgaⁿ manṫraⁿ gaaruṛee nivaaraⁿ. The snake-charmer, by his spell, neutralizes the poison and leaves the snake without fangs. ਬੵਾਧਿ ਉਪਾੜਣ ਸੰਤੰ ॥ ब्याधि उपाड़ण संतं ॥ Béaaḋʰ upaaṛaṇ sanṫaⁿ. Just so, the Saints remove suffering; ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧ ਕਰਮਣਹ ॥੧੬॥ नानक लबध करमणह ॥१६॥ Naanak labaḋʰ karamṇėh. ||16|| O Nanak! They are found by good karma. ||16|| ਜਥ ਕਥ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਅਣਹ ॥ जथ कथ रमणं सरणं सरबत्र जीअणह ॥ Jaṫʰ kaṫʰ ramṇaⁿ sarṇaⁿ sarbaṫar jee▫aṇah. The Lord is All-pervading everywhere; He gives Sanctuary to all living beings. ਤਥ ਲਗਣੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ तथ लगणं प्रेम नानक ॥ Ṫaṫʰ lagṇaⁿ parém Naanak. The mind is touched by His Love, O Nanak! ਪਰਸਾਦੰ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥੧੭॥ परसादं गुर दरसनह ॥१७॥ Parsaaḋaⁿ gur ḋarasnėh. ||17|| by Guru’s Grace, and the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. ||17|| ਚਰਣਾਰਬਿੰਦ ਮਨ ਬਿਧੵੰ ॥ चरणारबिंद मन बिध्यं ॥ Charṇaarbinḋ man biḋʰ▫yaⁿ. My mind is pierced through by the Lord’s Lotus Feet. ਸਿਧੵੰ ਸਰਬ ਕੁਸਲਣਹ ॥ सिध्यं सरब कुसलणह ॥ Siḋʰ▫yaⁿ sarab kusalṇėh. I am blessed with total happiness. ਗਾਥਾ ਗਾਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਬੵੰ ਪਰਾ ਪੂਰਬਣਹ ॥੧੮॥ गाथा गावंति नानक भब्यं परा पूरबणह ॥१८॥ Gaaṫʰaa gavanṫ Naanak bʰab▫yaⁿ paraa poorabṇėh. ||18|| Holy people have been singing this Gaat’haa, O Nanak! Since the very beginning of time. ||18|| ਸੁਭ ਬਚਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਗਵਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਉਧਰਣਹ ॥ सुभ बचन रमणं गवणं साध संगेण उधरणह ॥ Subʰ bachan ramṇaⁿ gavṇaⁿ saaḋʰ sangéṇ uḋʰarṇėh. Chanting and singing the Sublime Word of God in the Saadh Sangat, ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮ ਨ ਲਭੵਤੇ ॥੧੯॥ संसार सागरं नानक पुनरपि जनम न लभ्यते ॥१९॥ Sansaar saagraⁿ Naanak punrap janam na labʰ▫yaṫæ. ||19|| mortals are saved from the world-ocean. O Nanak! They shall never again be consigned to reincarnation. ||19|| ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੰ ॥ बेद पुराण सासत्र बीचारं ॥ Béḋ puraaṇ saasṫar beechaaraⁿ. People contemplate the Vedas, Puranas and Shastras. ਏਕੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਮ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੰ ॥ एकंकार नाम उर धारं ॥ Ékankaar naam ur ḋʰaaraⁿ. But by enshrining in their hearts the Naam, the Name of the One and Only Creator of the Universe, ਕੁਲਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰੰ ॥ कुलह समूह सगल उधारं ॥ Kulah samooh sagal uḋʰaaraⁿ. everyone can be saved. ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋ ਤਾਰੰ ॥੨੦॥ बडभागी नानक को तारं ॥२०॥ Badbʰaagee Naanak ko ṫaaraⁿ. ||20|| By great good fortune, O Nanak! A few cross over like this. ||20|| ਸਿਮਰਣੰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੰ ਉਧਰਣੰ ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹਣਹ ॥ सिमरणं गोबिंद नामं उधरणं कुल समूहणह ॥ Simarṇaⁿ gobinḋ naamaⁿ uḋʰarṇaⁿ kul samoohṇėh. Meditating in remembrance of the Naam, the Name of Lord of the Universe, all one’s generations are saved. ਲਬਧਿਅੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਭੇਟੰਤਿ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥੨੧॥ लबधिअं साध संगेण नानक वडभागी भेटंति दरसनह ॥२१॥ Labḋʰi▫aⁿ saaḋʰ sangéṇ Naanak vadbʰaagee bʰétanṫ ḋarasnėh. ||21|| It is obtained in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. O Nanak! By great good fortune, the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is seen. ||21|| ਸਰਬ ਦੋਖ ਪਰੰਤਿਆਗੀ ਸਰਬ ਧਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤਣਃ ॥ सरब दोख परंतिआगी सरब धरम द्रिड़ंतणः ॥ Sarab ḋokʰ paraⁿṫiaagee sarab ḋʰaram ḋariṛ▫aaⁿṫaṇh. Abandon all your evil habits, and implant all Dharmic faith within. ਲਬਧੇਣਿ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖੵਣਃ ॥੨੨॥ लबधेणि साध संगेणि नानक मसतकि लिख्यणः ॥२२॥ Labʰ▫ḋʰéṇ saaḋʰ sangéṇ Naanak masṫak likʰ▫yaṇ▫a. ||22|| The Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is obtained, O Nanak! By those who have such destiny written upon their foreheads. ||22|| ਹੋਯੋ ਹੈ ਹੋਵੰਤੋ ਹਰਣ ਭਰਣ ਸੰਪੂਰਣਃ ॥ होयो है होवंतो हरण भरण स्मपूरणः ॥ Hoyo hæ hovanṫo haraṇ bʰaraṇ sampooraṇ▫a. God was, is, and shall always be. He sustains and destroys all. ਸਾਧੂ ਸਤਮ ਜਾਣੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਾਰਣੰ ॥੨੩॥ साधू सतम जाणो नानक प्रीति कारणं ॥२३॥ Saaḋʰoo saṫam jaaṇo Naanak pareeṫ kaarṇaⁿ. ||23|| Know that these Holy people are true, O Nanak; they are in love with the Lord. ||23|| ਸੁਖੇਣ ਬੈਣ ਰਤਨੰ ਰਚਨੰ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਰੰਗਣਃ ॥ सुखेण बैण रतनं रचनं कसु्मभ रंगणः ॥ Sukʰéṇ bæṇ raṫanaⁿ rachanaⁿ kasumbʰ raⁿgaṇ▫a. The mortal is engrossed in sweet words and transitory pleasures which shall soon fade away. ਰੋਗ ਸੋਗ ਬਿਓਗੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਸੁਪਨਹ ॥੨੪॥ रोग सोग बिओगं नानक सुखु न सुपनह ॥२४॥ Rog sog biogaⁿ Naanak sukʰ na supnah. ||24|| Disease, sorrow and separation afflict him; O Nanak! He never finds peace, even in dreams. ||24||
