Who is the brother, friend, companion and relative? Who is emotionally attached to the family? ਕਤੰਚ ਮਾਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸੁਤਹ ॥ कतंच माता कतंच पिता कतंच बनिता बिनोद सुतह ॥ Kaṫanch maaṫaa kaṫanch piṫaa kaṫanch baniṫaa binoḋ suṫah. Who is the mother, and who is the father? Who is the son, and what is the pleasure of marriage? ਰਹੰਤ ਸੰਗ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਤਨਹ ॥੧॥ रहंत संग भगवान सिमरण नानक लबध्यं अचुत तनह ॥१॥ Rahanṫ sang bʰagvaan simraṇ Naanak labḋʰa▫yaⁿ achuṫ ṫanah. ||1|| Only the meditative remembrance of God remains with us. O Nanak! It brings the blessings of the Saints, the sons of the Imperishable Lord. ||1|| ਕਤੰਚ ਚਪਲ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਰੂਪੰ ਪੇਖੰਤੇ ਤਿਆਗੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥ कतंच चपल मोहनी रूपं पेखंते तिआगं करोति ॥ Kaṫanch chapal mohnee roopaⁿ pékʰanṫé ṫi▫aagaⁿ karoṫ. The captivating fickle Maya leaves in front of our eyes. ਧ੍ਰਿਗੰਤ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥ ध्रिगंत मात पिता सनेहं ध्रिग सनेहं भ्रात बांधवह ॥ Ḋʰariganṫ maaṫ piṫaa sanéhaⁿ ḋʰarig sanéhaⁿ bʰaraaṫ baaⁿḋʰvah. Cursed is loving attachment to one’s mother and father; cursed is loving attachment to one’s siblings and relatives. ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਸੁਤਹ ॥ ध्रिग स्नेहं बनिता बिलास सुतह ॥ Ḋʰarig snėh▫aⁿ baniṫaa bilaas suṫah. Cursed is attachment to the joys of family life with one’s spouse and children. ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਾਰਥ ਕਹ ॥ ध्रिग स्नेहं ग्रिहारथ कह ॥ Ḋʰarig snėh▫aⁿ garihaaraṫʰ kah. Cursed is attachment to household affairs. ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹ ਸਤੵਿੰ ਸੁਖਯੰ ਬਸੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕਹ ॥੨॥ साधसंग स्नेह सत्यिं सुखयं बसंति नानकह ॥२॥ Saaḋʰsang snėh saṫi▫yaⁿ sukʰ▫yaⁿ basanṫ naankah. ||2|| Only loving attachment to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is True. Nanak dwells there in peace. ||2|| ਮਿਥੵੰਤ ਦੇਹੰ ਖੀਣੰਤ ਬਲਨੰ ॥ मिथ्यंत देहं खीणंत बलनं ॥ Miṫʰ▫yanṫ ḋéhaⁿ kʰeeṇanṫ balanaⁿ. The body is false; its power is temporary. ਗਨੰਤ ਸ੍ਵਾਸਾ ਭੈਯਾਨ ਧਰਮੰ ॥ गनंत स्वासा भैयान धरमं ॥ Gananṫ savasaa bʰæyaan ḋʰarmaⁿ. The Righteous Judge of Dharma is relentless; he counts each and every breath. ਪਤੰਤਿ ਮੋਹ ਕੂਪ ਦੁਰਲਭੵ ਦੇਹੰ ਤਤ ਆਸ੍ਰਯੰ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ पतंति मोह कूप दुरलभ्य देहं तत आस्रयं नानक ॥ Paṫanṫ moh koop ḋurlabʰa▫y ḋéhaⁿ ṫaṫ aasar▫yaⁿ Naanak. The human body, so difficult to obtain, has fallen into the deep dark pit of emotional attachment. O Nanak! Its only support is God, the Essence of Reality. ਅਤੵੰਤ ਆਸਾ ਆਥਿਤੵ ਭਵਨੰ ॥ अत्यंत आसा आथित्य भवनं ॥ Aṫ▫yanṫ aasaa aaṫʰiṫ▫y bʰavanaⁿ. The human is only a temporary guest in the home of the body, but he has high hopes. ਬਰਧੰਤਿ ਜਰੂਆ ਹਿਤੵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ बरधंति जरूआ हित्यंत माइआ ॥ Barḋʰanṫ jaroo▫aa hiṫ▫yanṫ maa▫i▫aa. It grows old; its love for Maya increases greatly. ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ॥੩॥ गोबिंद गोबिंद गोबिंद गोपाल क्रिपा ॥३॥ Gobinḋ gobinḋ gobinḋ gopaal kirpaa. ||3|| O God, Lord of the World, Lord of the Universe, Master of the Universe, please be kind to me. ||3|| ਕਾਚ ਕੋਟੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਤੋਯੰ ਲੇਪਨੰ ਰਕਤ ਚਰਮਣਹ ॥ काच कोटं रचंति तोयं लेपनं रकत चरमणह ॥ Kaach kotaⁿ rachanṫ ṫo▫yaⁿ lépanaⁿ rakaṫ charamṇėh. This fragile body-fortress is made up of water, plastered with blood and wrapped in skin. ਨਵੰਤ ਦੁਆਰੰ ਭੀਤ ਰਹਿਤੰ ਬਾਇ ਰੂਪੰ ਅਸਥੰਭਨਹ ॥ नवंत दुआरं भीत रहितं बाइ रूपं असथ्मभनह ॥ Navanṫ ḋu▫aaraⁿ bʰeeṫ rahiṫaⁿ baa▫é roopaⁿ asṫʰambʰnah. It has nine gates, but no doors; it is supported by pillars of wind, the channels of the breath. ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੰ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਨੰਤਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ॥ गोबिंद नामं नह सिमरंति अगिआनी जानंति असथिरं ॥ Gobinḋ naamaⁿ nah simranṫ agi▫aanee jaananṫ asṫʰiraⁿ. The ignorant person does not meditate in remembrance of the Lord of the Universe; he thinks that this body is permanent. ਦੁਰਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਉਧਰੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ दुरलभ देह उधरंत साध सरण नानक ॥ Ḋurlabʰ ḋéh uḋʰranṫ saaḋʰ saraṇ Naanak. This precious body is saved and redeemed in the Sanctuary of the Holy, O Nanak! ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਜਪੰਤਿ ॥੪॥ हरि हरि हरि हरि हरि हरे जपंति ॥४॥ Har har har har har haré japanṫ. ||4|| chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||4|| ਭ੍ਰਿਤਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਚਰਣੰ ॥ भ्रितिआ प्रिअं बिस्राम चरणं ॥ Bʰariṫi▫aa pari▫aⁿ bisraam charṇaⁿ. O Lover of Your devoted servants, Your Feet are a Sanctuary of Peace. ਗੰਭੀਰੰ ਊਚੈ ਸਰਬਗਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ ग्मभीरं ऊचै सरबगि अपारा ॥ Gambʰeeraⁿ oochæ sarbag apaaraa. Profound and Unfathomable, Lofty and Exalted, All-knowing and Infinite Lord God. ਸੁਭੰਤ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਗੁਣਗੵੰ ਪੂਰਨੰ ਬਹੁਲੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ सुभंत तुयं अचुत गुणग्यं पूरनं बहुलो क्रिपाला ॥ Subʰanṫ ṫu▫yaⁿ achuṫ guṇga▫yaⁿ pooranaⁿ bahulo kirpaalaa. O Glorious, Eternal and Imperishable, Perfect and Abundantly Compassionate, ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣੰ ॥੫॥ अनाथ नाथे नानक सरणं ॥५॥ Anaaṫʰ naaṫʰé Naanak sarṇaⁿ. ||5|| O Master of the masterless, Helper of the helpless, Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary. ||5|| ਮ੍ਰਿਗੀ ਪੇਖੰਤ ਬਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇਣ ਲਖੵ ਆਵਧਹ ॥ म्रिगी पेखंत बधिक प्रहारेण लख्य आवधह ॥ Marigee pékʰanṫ baḋʰik par▫haaréṇ lakʰ▫y aavḋʰah. Seeing the deer, the hunter aims his weapons. ਅਹੋ ਜਸੵ ਰਖੇਣ ਗੋਪਾਲਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੋਮ ਨ ਛੇਦੵਤੇ ॥੬॥ अहो जस्य रखेण गोपालह नानक रोम न छेद्यते ॥६॥ Aho jas▫y rakʰéṇ gopaalah Naanak rom na chʰéd▫yṫé. ||6|| But if one is protected by the Lord of the World, O Nanak! Not a hair on his head will be touched. ||6|| ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਕਾਰੀ ਸੇਵੰਤ ਸੂਰਾ ਚਤੁਰ ਦਿਸਹ ॥ बहु जतन करता बलवंत कारी सेवंत सूरा चतुर दिसह ॥ Baho jaṫan karṫaa balvanṫ kaaree sévanṫ sooraa chaṫur ḋisah. He may be surrounded on all four sides by servants and powerful warriors; ਬਿਖਮ ਥਾਨ ਬਸੰਤ ਊਚਹ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਕਦਾਂਚਹ ॥ बिखम थान बसंत ऊचह नह सिमरंत मरणं कदांचह ॥ Bikʰam ṫʰaan basanṫ oochah nah simranṫ marṇaⁿ kaḋaaⁿchėh. he may dwell in a lofty place, difficult to approach, and never even think of death. ਹੋਵੰਤਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਟੀ ਸਾਸ ਅਕਰਖਤੇ ॥੭॥ होवंति आगिआ भगवान पुरखह नानक कीटी सास अकरखते ॥७॥ Hovanṫ aagi▫aa bʰagvaan pukʰah Naanak keetee saas akarkʰaṫé. ||7|| But when the Order comes from the Primal Lord God, O Nanak! Even an ant can take away his breath of life. ||7|| ਸਬਦੰ ਰਤੰ ਹਿਤੰ ਮਇਆ ਕੀਰਤੰ ਕਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੁਆ ॥ सबदं रतं हितं मइआ कीरतं कली करम क्रितुआ ॥ Sabḋaⁿ raṫaⁿ hiṫaⁿ ma▫i▫aa keerṫaⁿ kalee karam kriṫu▫aa. To be imbued and attuned to the Word of the Shabad; to be kind and compassionate; to sing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises - these are the most worthwhile actions in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ਭਗਵਾਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਥਾਨੵਿੰ ॥ भगवान रमणं सरबत्र थान्यिं ॥ Bʰagvaan ramṇaⁿ sarbaṫar ṫʰaani▫yaⁿ. God is pervading and permeating all places. ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨੰ ਬਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਰਸਨਾ ॥ द्रिसट तुयं अमोघ दरसनं बसंत साध रसना ॥ Ḋarisat ṫu▫yaⁿ amogʰ ḋarsanaⁿ basanṫ saaḋʰ rasnaa. So, obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; He dwells upon the tongues of the Holy. ਮਿਟੰਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਰਾਗਤ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ॥ मिटंति तत्रागत भरम मोहं ॥ Mitanṫ ṫaṫraagaṫ bʰaram mohaⁿ. In this way, one’s inner doubts and emotional attachments are dispelled. ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੮॥ हरि हरि हरि हरे नानक प्रिअं जापु जपना ॥८॥ Har har har haré Naanak pari▫aⁿ jaap japnaa. ||8|| O Nanak! Meditate and chant the Name of the Beloved Lord, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||8|| ਘਟੰਤ ਰੂਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਦੀਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਰਵਿ ਸਸੀਅਰ ਨਖੵਤ੍ਰ ਗਗਨੰ ॥ घटंत रूपं घटंत दीपं घटंत रवि ससीअर नख्यत्र गगनं ॥ Gʰatanṫ roopaⁿ gʰatanṫ deepaⁿ gʰatanṫ rav sasee▫ar nakʰ▫yaṫar gaganaⁿ. Beauty fades away, islands fade away, the sun, moon, stars and sky fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਸਿਖੰਡੰ ॥ घटंत बसुधा गिरि तर सिखंडं ॥ Gʰatanṫ basuḋʰaa gir ṫar sikʰaⁿdaⁿ. The earth, mountains, forests and lands fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਲਲਨਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਹੀਤੰ ॥ घटंत ललना सुत भ्रात हीतं ॥ Gʰatanṫ lalnaa suṫ bʰaraaṫ heeṫaⁿ. one’s spouse, children, siblings and loved friends fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਕਨਿਕ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੰ ॥ घटंत कनिक मानिक माइआ स्वरूपं ॥ Gʰatanṫ kanik maanik maa▫i▫aa savroopaⁿ. Gold and jewels and the incomparable beauty of Maya fade away. ਨਹ ਘਟੰਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ॥ नह घटंत केवल गोपाल अचुत ॥ Nah gʰatanṫ kéval gopaal achuṫ. Only the Eternal, Unchanging Lord does not fade away. ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ॥੯॥ असथिरं नानक साध जन ॥९॥ Asṫʰiraⁿ Naanak saaḋʰ jan. ||9|| O Nanak! Only the humble Saints are steady and stable forever. ||9|| ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਨਾਸੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੰ ਧਰਮ ਲਖੵਿਣ ॥ सरणि संतं किलबिख नासं प्रापतं धरम लख्यिण ॥ Saraṇ sanṫaⁿ kilbikʰ naasaⁿ paraapṫaⁿ ḋʰaram lakʰ▫yiṇ. In the Sanctuary of the Saints, the sins are erased. The character of righteousness is received by that person, ਨਹ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਧਰਮੰ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਪਾਪੰ ॥ नह बिल्मब धरमं बिल्मब पापं ॥ Nah bilamb ḋʰarmaⁿ bilamb paapaⁿ. Do not delay in practicing righteousness; delay in committing sins. ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਨਾਮੰ ਤਜੰਤ ਲੋਭੰ ॥ द्रिड़ंत नामं तजंत लोभं ॥ Ḋariṛ▫aaⁿṫ naamaⁿ ṫajanṫ lobʰaⁿ. Implant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within yourself, and abandon greed. ਮਿਰਤ ਮੋਹੰ ਅਲਪ ਬੁਧੵੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸਾਹੰ ॥ मिरत मोहं अलप बुध्यं रचंति बनिता बिनोद साहं ॥ Miraṫ mohaⁿ alap buḋʰ▫yaⁿ rachanṫ baniṫaa binoḋ saahaⁿ. The person of shallow understanding is dying in emotional attachment; he is engrossed in pursuits of pleasure with his wife. ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਮਾਧਵਹ ॥੧੦॥ नानक जिह सुप्रसंन माधवह ॥१०॥ Naanak jih suparsan maaḋʰvah. ||10|| O Nanak! With whom the Lord is pleased and satisfied. ||10|| ਜੌਬਨ ਬਹਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਨਿਕ ਕੁੰਡਲਹ ॥ जौबन बहिक्रम कनिक कुंडलह ॥ Jouban bahikaram kanik kundlah. With youthful beauty and golden earrings, ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਸੋਭੰਤਿ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ਇਤੵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੵਾਪਿਤੰ ॥ बचित्र मंदिर सोभंति बसत्रा इत्यंत माइआ ब्यापितं ॥ Bachiṫar manḋir sobʰanṫ basṫaraa iṫ▫yanṫ maa▫i▫aa bi▫yaapiṫaⁿ. wondrous mansions, decorations and clothes - this is how Maya clings to him. ਹੇ ਅਚੁਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋ ਭਗਵਾਨਏ ਨਮਹ ॥੧੧॥ हे अचुत सरणि संत नानक भो भगवानए नमह ॥११॥ Hé achuṫ saraṇ sanṫ Naanak bʰo bʰagvaana▫é namah. ||11|| O Eternal, Unchanging, Benevolent Lord God, O Sanctuary of the Saints, Nanak humbly bows to You. ||11|| ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਹਰਖੰ ਤ ਸੋਗੰ ਭੋਗੰ ਤ ਰੋਗੰ ॥ जनमं त मरणं हरखं त सोगं भोगं त रोगं ॥ Janmaⁿ ṫa marṇaⁿ harkʰaⁿ ṫa sogaⁿ bʰogaⁿ ṫa rogaⁿ. If there is birth, then there is death. If there is pleasure, then there is pain. If there is enjoyment, then there is disease. ਊਚੰ ਤ ਨੀਚੰ ਨਾਨੑਾ ਸੁ ਮੂਚੰ ॥ ऊचं त नीचं नान्हा सु मूचं ॥ Oonchaⁿ ṫa neechaⁿ naanĥaa so moochaⁿ. If there is high, then there is low. If there is small, then there is great. ਰਾਜੰ ਤ ਮਾਨੰ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੰ ਤ ਹੀਨੰ ॥ राजं त मानं अभिमानं त हीनं ॥ Raajaⁿ ṫa maanaⁿ abʰimaanaⁿ ṫa heenaⁿ. If there is power, then there is pride. If there is egotistical pride, then there will be a fall. ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਰਗੰ ਵਰਤੰਤਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੰ ॥ प्रविरति मारगं वरतंति बिनासनं ॥ Parviraṫ maargaⁿ varṫanṫ binaasanaⁿ. Engrossed in worldly ways, one is ruined. ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਜਨਾਸਨੰ ॥੧੨॥ गोबिंद भजन साध संगेण असथिरं नानक भगवंत भजनासनं ॥१२॥ Gobinḋ bʰajan saaḋʰ sangéṇ asṫʰiraⁿ Naanak bʰagvanṫ bʰajnaasnaⁿ. ||12|| Meditating and vibrating on the Lord of the Universe in the Company of the Holy, you shall become steady and stable. Nanak vibrates and meditates on the Lord God. ||12|| ਕਿਰਪੰਤ ਹਰੀਅੰ ਮਤਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੰ ॥ किरपंत हरीअं मति ततु गिआनं ॥ Kirpanṫ haree▫aⁿ maṫ ṫaṫ gi▫aanaⁿ. By the Grace of God, genuine understanding comes to the mind. ਬਿਗਸੀਧੵਿ ਬੁਧਾ ਕੁਸਲ ਥਾਨੰ ॥ बिगसीध्यि बुधा कुसल थानं ॥ Bigseeḋʰiy buḋʰaa kusal ṫʰaanaⁿ. The intellect blossoms forth, and one finds a place in the realm of celestial bliss. ਬਸੵਿੰਤ ਰਿਖਿਅੰ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਮਾਨੰ ॥ बस्यिंत रिखिअं तिआगि मानं ॥ Bas▫yant rikʰi▫aⁿ ṫi▫aag maanaⁿ. The senses are brought under control, and pride is abandoned. ਸੀਤਲੰਤ ਰਿਦਯੰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਸੰਤ ਗਿਆਨੰ ॥ सीतलंत रिदयं द्रिड़ु संत गिआनं ॥ Seeṫlanṫ riḋ▫yaⁿ ḋariṛ sanṫ gi▫aanaⁿ. The heart is cooled and soothed, and the wisdom of the Saints is implanted within. ਰਹੰਤ ਜਨਮੰ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸ ਲੀਣਾ ॥ रहंत जनमं हरि दरस लीणा ॥ Rahanṫ janmaⁿ har ḋaras leeṇaa. Reincarnation is ended, and the Blessed Vision of the Lord’s Darshan is obtained. ਬਾਜੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਣਾਂ ॥੧੩॥ बाजंत नानक सबद बीणां ॥१३॥ Baajanṫ Naanak sabaḋ beeṇaaⁿ. ||13|| O Nanak! The musical instrument of the Word of the Shabad vibrates and resounds within. ||13|| ਕਹੰਤ ਬੇਦਾ ਗੁਣੰਤ ਗੁਨੀਆ ਸੁਣੰਤ ਬਾਲਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਾ ॥ कहंत बेदा गुणंत गुनीआ सुणंत बाला बहु बिधि प्रकारा ॥ Kahanṫ béḋaa guṇanṫ gunee▫aa suṇanṫ baalaa baho biḋʰ parkaaraa. The Vedas preach and recount God’s Glories; people hear them by various ways and means. ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਸੁਬਿਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ द्रिड़ंत सुबिदिआ हरि हरि क्रिपाला ॥ Ḋariṛ▫aaⁿṫ subiḋi▫aa har har kirpaalaa. The Merciful Lord, Har, Har, implants spiritual wisdom within. ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਜਾਚੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੈਨਹਾਰ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥੧੪॥ नाम दानु जाचंत नानक दैनहार गुर गोपाला ॥१४॥ Naam ḋaan jaachanṫ Naanak ḋænhaar gur gopaalaa. ||14|| Nanak begs for the Gift of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Guru is the Great Giver, the Lord of the World. ||14|| ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤਹ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਨਬੰਧਨਹ ॥ नह चिंता बनिता सुत मीतह प्रविरति माइआ सनबंधनह ॥ Nah chinṫaa baniṫaa suṫ meeṫah parviraṫ maa▫i▫aa sanbʰanḋʰnah. Do not worry about your spouse, children and friends. You are obsessed with your involvements in Maya. ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਹ ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਛੁ ਲੋਕ ਕਹ ॥ नह चिंता मात पित भ्रातह नह चिंता कछु लोक कह ॥ Nah chinṫaa maaṫ piṫ bʰaraaṫah nah chinṫaa kachʰ lok kah. Do not worry so much about your mother, father and siblings. Do not worry so much about other people. ਦਇਆਲ ਏਕ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਕਹ ॥੧੫॥ दइआल एक भगवान पुरखह नानक सरब जीअ प्रतिपालकह ॥१५॥ Ḋa▫i▫aal ék bʰagvaan pukʰah Naanak sarab jee▫a parṫipaalkėh. ||15|| The One Lord God is Kind and Compassionate, O Nanak. He is the Cherisher and Nurturer of all living beings. ||15|| ਅਨਿਤੵ ਵਿਤੰ ਅਨਿਤੵ ਚਿਤੰ ਅਨਿਤੵ ਆਸਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰੰ ॥ अनित्य वितं अनित्य चितं अनित्य आसा बहु बिधि प्रकारं ॥ Aniṫ▫y viṫaⁿ aniṫ▫y chiṫaⁿ aniṫ▫y aasaa baho biḋʰ parkaaraⁿ. Wealth is temporary; conscious existence is temporary; hopes of all sorts are temporary. ਅਨਿਤੵ ਹੇਤੰ ਅਹੰ ਬੰਧੰ ਭਰਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲਨੰ ਬਿਕਾਰੰ ॥ अनित्य हेतं अहं बंधं भरम माइआ मलनं बिकारं ॥ Aniṫ▫y héṫaⁿ ahaⁿ banḋʰaⁿ bʰaram maa▫i▫aa malanaⁿ bikaaraⁿ. The bonds of love, attachment, egotism, doubt, Maya and the pollution of corruption are temporary. ਫਿਰੰਤ ਜੋਨਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਜਠਰਾਗਨਿ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਲੀਣ ਬੁਧੵੰ ॥ फिरंत जोनि अनेक जठरागनि नह सिमरंत मलीण बुध्यं ॥ Firanṫ jon anék jʰatʰraagan nah simranṫ maleeṇ buḋʰ▫yaⁿ. The mortal passes through the fire of the womb of reincarnation countless times. He does not remember the Lord in meditation; his understanding is polluted. ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਰਤ ਮਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਮਹ ॥੧੬॥ हे गोबिंद करत मइआ नानक पतित उधारण साध संगमह ॥१६॥ Hé gobinḋ karaṫ ma▫i▫aa Naanak paṫiṫ uḋʰaaraṇ saaḋʰ sangmah. ||16|| O Lord of the Universe, when You grant Your Grace, even sinners are saved. Nanak dwells in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||16|| ਗਿਰੰਤ ਗਿਰਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਤਾਲੰ ਜਲੰਤ ਦੇਦੀਪੵ ਬੈਸ੍ਵਾਂਤਰਹ ॥ गिरंत गिरि पतित पातालं जलंत देदीप्य बैस्वांतरह ॥ Giranṫ gir paṫiṫ paaṫaalaⁿ jalanṫ ḋéḋeep▫y bæsvaaⁿṫarėh. You may drop down from the mountains, and fall into the nether regions of the underworld, or be burnt in the blazing fire, ਬਹੰਤਿ ਅਗਾਹ ਤੋਯੰ ਤਰੰਗੰ ਦੁਖੰਤ ਗ੍ਰਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣਹ ॥ बहंति अगाह तोयं तरंगं दुखंत ग्रह चिंता जनमं त मरणह ॥ Bahanṫ agaah ṫo▫yaⁿ ṫarangaⁿ ḋukʰanṫ garah chinṫaa janmaⁿ ṫa marṇah. or swept away by the unfathomable waves of water; but the worst pain of all is household anxiety, which is the source of the cycle of death and rebirth. ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਧਨੰ ਨ ਸਿਧੵਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਸਬਦ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੧੭॥ अनिक साधनं न सिध्यते नानक असथ्मभं असथ्मभं असथ्मभं सबद साध स्वजनह ॥१७॥ Anik saaḋʰanaⁿ na siḋʰ▫yaṫæ Naanak asṫʰambʰaⁿ asṫʰambʰaⁿ asṫʰambʰaⁿ sabaḋ saaḋʰ savajniĥ. ||17|| No matter what you do, you cannot break its bonds, O Nanak. Man’s only Support, Anchor and Mainstay is the Word of the Shabad, and the Holy, Friendly Saints. ||17|| ਘੋਰ ਦੁਖੵੰ ਅਨਿਕ ਹਤੵੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਾਰਿਦ੍ਰੰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੵਾਦੰ ॥ घोर दुख्यं अनिक हत्यं जनम दारिद्रं महा बिख्यादं ॥ Gʰor ḋukʰ▫yaⁿ anik haṫ▫yaⁿ janam ḋaariḋaraⁿ mahaa bikʰ▫yaaḋⁿ. Excruciating pain, countless killings, reincarnation, poverty and terrible misery ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੰ ਗੁਣ ਰਮੰਤ ਅਘ ਖੰਡਨਹ ॥ अंधकार सिमरत प्रकासं गुण रमंत अघ खंडनह ॥ Anḋʰkaar simraṫ parkaasaⁿ guṇ ramanṫ agʰ kʰandnah. Meditating in remembrance of the Lord, the darkness is illuminated. Dwelling on His Glorious Praises, the ugly sins are destroyed. ਮਿਟੰਤ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਵਕ ਕਾਸਟ ਭਸਮੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥੧੮॥ मिटंत सगल सिमरंत हरि नाम नानक जैसे पावक कासट भसमं करोति ॥१८॥ Mitanṫ sagal simranṫ har naam Naanak jæsé paavak kaasat bʰasmaⁿ karoṫ. ||18|| are all destroyed by meditating in remembrance of the Lord’s Name, O Nanak! Just as fire reduces piles of wood to ashes. ||18|| ਰਿਦ ਬਸੰਤਿ ਭੈ ਭੀਤ ਦੂਤਹ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤ ਮਹਾ ਨਿਰਮਲਹ ॥ रिद बसंति भै भीत दूतह करम करत महा निरमलह ॥ Riḋ basanṫ bʰæ bʰeeṫ ḋooṫah karam karaṫ mahaa niramlėh. Enshrining the Lord deep within the heart, and with the immaculate karma of doing good deeds, one strikes fear into the demons. ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਰਹੰਤ ਸ੍ਰੋਤਾ ਸੁਖ ਸਮੂਹ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥ जनम मरण रहंत स्रोता सुख समूह अमोघ दरसनह ॥ Janam maraṇ rahanṫ saroṫaa sukʰ samooh amogʰ ḋarasnėh. The cycle of coming and going in reincarnation is ended, absolute peace is obtained, and the Fruitful Vision of the Lord’s Darshan. ਸਰਣਿ ਜੋਗੰ ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਖੇਮੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥੧੯॥ सरणि जोगं संत प्रिअ नानक सो भगवान खेमं करोति ॥१९॥ Saraṇ jogaⁿ sanṫ pari▫a Naanak so bʰagvaan kʰémaⁿ karoṫ. ||19|| He is Potent to give Protection, He is the Lover of His Saints. O Nanak! The Lord God blesses all with bliss. ||19|| ਪਾਛੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ਅਗ੍ਰਣੀਵਹ ਨਿਰਾਸੰ ਆਸ ਪੂਰਨਹ ॥ पाछं करोति अग्रणीवह निरासं आस पूरनह ॥ Paachʰaⁿ karoṫ agarṇeevėh niraasaⁿ aas poornah. Those who were left behind - the Lord brings them to the front. He fulfills the hopes of the hopeless. ਨਿਰਧਨ ਭਯੰ ਧਨਵੰਤਹ ਰੋਗੀਅੰ ਰੋਗ ਖੰਡਨਹ ॥ निरधन भयं धनवंतह रोगीअं रोग खंडनह ॥ Nirḋʰan bʰa▫yaⁿ ḋʰanvanṫah rogee▫aⁿ rog kʰandnah. He makes the poor rich, and cures the illnesses of the ill. ਭਗਤੵੰ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਾਨੰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥ भगत्यं भगति दानं राम नाम गुण कीरतनह ॥ Bʰagaṫ▫yaⁿ bʰagaṫ ḋaanaⁿ raam naam guṇ keeraṫnėh. He blesses His devotees with devotion. They sing the Kirtan of the Praises of the Lord’s Name. ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾਤਾਰਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿੰ ਨ ਲਭੵਤੇ ॥੨੦॥ पारब्रहम पुरख दातारह नानक गुर सेवा किं न लभ्यते ॥२०॥ Paarbarahm purakʰ ḋaaṫaarėh Naanak gur sévaa kiⁿ na labʰ▫yaṫæ. ||20|| O Nanak! Those who serve the Guru find the Supreme Lord God, the Great Giver||20|| ਅਧਰੰ ਧਰੰ ਧਾਰਣਹ ਨਿਰਧਨੰ ਧਨ ਨਾਮ ਨਰਹਰਹ ॥ अधरं धरं धारणह निरधनं धन नाम नरहरह ॥ Aḋʰraⁿ ḋʰaraⁿ ḋʰaarṇah nirḋʰanaⁿ ḋʰan naam nar▫harėh. He gives Support to the unsupported. The Name of the Lord is the Wealth of the poor. ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਬਲਹੀਣ ਬਲ ਕੇਸਵਹ ॥ अनाथ नाथ गोबिंदह बलहीण बल केसवह ॥ Anaaṫʰ naaṫʰ gobinḋah balheeṇ bal késvah. The Lord of the Universe is the Master of the masterless; the Beautiful-haired Lord is the Power of the weak. ਸਰਬ ਭੂਤ ਦਯਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ਦੀਨ ਬਾਂਧਵ ਦਾਮੋਦਰਹ ॥ सरब भूत दयाल अचुत दीन बांधव दामोदरह ॥ Sarab bʰooṫ ḋa▫yaal achuṫ ḋeen baaⁿḋʰav ḋaamoḋarėh. The Lord is Merciful to all beings, Eternal and Unchanging, the Family of the meek and humble. ਸਰਬਗੵ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨਹ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮਯਹ ॥ सरबग्य पूरन पुरख भगवानह भगति वछल करुणा मयह ॥ Sarabga▫y pooran purakʰ bʰagvaanėh bʰagaṫ vachʰal karuṇaa ma▫yėh. The All-knowing, Perfect, Primal Lord God is the Lover of His devotees, the Embodiment of Mercy.
