Who is the brother, friend, companion and relative? Who is emotionally attached to the family? ਕਤੰਚ ਮਾਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸੁਤਹ ॥ कतंच माता कतंच पिता कतंच बनिता बिनोद सुतह ॥ Kaṯancẖ māṯā kaṯancẖ piṯā kaṯancẖ baniṯā binoḏ suṯah. Who is the mother, and who is the father? Who is the son, and what is the pleasure of marriage? ਰਹੰਤ ਸੰਗ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਤਨਹ ॥੧॥ रहंत संग भगवान सिमरण नानक लबध्यं अचुत तनह ॥१॥ Rahanṯ sang bẖagvān simraṇ Nānak labḏẖa▫yaʼn acẖuṯ ṯanah. ||1|| Only the meditative remembrance of God remains with us. O Nanak, it brings the blessings of the Saints, the sons of the Imperishable Lord. ||1|| ਕਤੰਚ ਚਪਲ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਰੂਪੰ ਪੇਖੰਤੇ ਤਿਆਗੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥ कतंच चपल मोहनी रूपं पेखंते तिआगं करोति ॥ Kaṯancẖ cẖapal mohnī rūpaʼn pekẖanṯe ṯi▫āgaʼn karoṯ. Who is restlessly attached to beauty? It leaves, as soon as we see it. ਧ੍ਰਿਗੰਤ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥ ध्रिगंत मात पिता सनेहं ध्रिग सनेहं भ्रात बांधवह ॥ Ḏẖariganṯ māṯ piṯā sanehaʼn ḏẖarig sanehaʼn bẖarāṯ bāʼnḏẖvah. Cursed is loving attachment to one's mother and father; cursed is loving attachment to one's siblings and relatives. ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਸੁਤਹ ॥ ध्रिग स्नेहं बनिता बिलास सुतह ॥ Ḏẖarig snėh▫aʼn baniṯā bilās suṯah. Cursed is attachment to the joys of family life with one's spouse and children. ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਾਰਥ ਕਹ ॥ ध्रिग स्नेहं ग्रिहारथ कह ॥ Ḏẖarig snėh▫aʼn garihārath kah. Cursed is attachment to household affairs. ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹ ਸਤ੍ਯ੍ਯਿੰ ਸੁਖਯੰ ਬਸੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕਹ ॥੨॥ साधसंग स्नेह सत्यिं सुखयं बसंति नानकह ॥२॥ Sāḏẖsang snėh saṯi▫yaʼn sukẖ▫yaʼn basanṯ nānkah. ||2|| Only loving attachment to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is True. Nanak dwells there in peace. ||2|| ਮਿਥ੍ਯ੍ਯੰਤ ਦੇਹੰ ਖੀਣੰਤ ਬਲਨੰ ॥ मिथ्यंत देहं खीणंत बलनं ॥ Mith▫yanṯ ḏehaʼn kẖīṇanṯ balanaʼn. The body is false; its power is temporary. ਗਨੰਤ ਸ੍ਵਾਸਾ ਭੈਯਾਨ ਧਰਮੰ ॥ गनंत स्वासा भैयान धरमं ॥ Gananṯ savasā bẖaiyān ḏẖarmaʼn. The Righteous Judge of Dharma is relentless; he counts each and every breath. ਪਤੰਤਿ ਮੋਹ ਕੂਪ ਦੁਰਲਭ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਦੇਹੰ ਤਤ ਆਸ੍ਰਯੰ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ पतंति मोह कूप दुरलभ्य देहं तत आस्रयं नानक ॥ Paṯanṯ moh kūp ḏurlabẖa▫y ḏehaʼn ṯaṯ āsar▫yaʼn Nānak. The human body, so difficult to obtain, has fallen into the deep dark pit of emotional attachment. O Nanak, its only support is God, the Essence of Reality. ਅਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰਤ ਆਸਾ ਆਥਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਭਵਨੰ ॥ अत्यंत आसा आथित्य भवनं ॥ Aṯ▫yanṯ āsā āthiṯ▫y bẖavanaʼn. The human is only a temporary guest in the home of the body, but he has high hopes. ਬਰਧੰਤਿ ਜਰੂਆ ਹਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ बरधंति जरूआ हित्यंत माइआ ॥ Barḏẖanṯ jarū▫ā hiṯ▫yanṯ mā▫i▫ā. It grows old; its love for Maya increases greatly. ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ॥੩॥ गोबिंद गोबिंद गोबिंद गोपाल क्रिपा ॥३॥ Gobinḏ gobinḏ gobinḏ gopāl kirpā. ||3|| O God, Lord of the World, Lord of the Universe, Master of the Universe, please be kind to me. ||3|| ਕਾਚ ਕੋਟੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਤੋਯੰ ਲੇਪਨੰ ਰਕਤ ਚਰਮਣਹ ॥ काच कोटं रचंति तोयं लेपनं रकत चरमणह ॥ Kācẖ kotaʼn racẖanṯ ṯo▫yaʼn lepanaʼn rakaṯ cẖaramṇėh. This fragile body-fortress is made up of water, plastered with blood and wrapped in skin. ਨਵੰਤ ਦੁਆਰੰ ਭੀਤ ਰਹਿਤੰ ਬਾਇ ਰੂਪੰ ਅਸਥੰਭਨਹ ॥ नवंत दुआरं भीत रहितं बाइ रूपं असथ्मभनह ॥ Navanṯ ḏu▫āraʼn bẖīṯ rahiṯaʼn bā▫e rūpaʼn asthambẖnah. It has nine gates, but no doors; it is supported by pillars of wind, the channels of the breath. ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੰ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਨੰਤਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ॥ गोबिंद नामं नह सिमरंति अगिआनी जानंति असथिरं ॥ Gobinḏ nāmaʼn nah simranṯ agi▫ānī jānanṯ asthiraʼn. The ignorant person does not meditate in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe; he thinks that this body is permanent. ਦੁਰਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਉਧਰੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ दुरलभ देह उधरंत साध सरण नानक ॥ Ḏurlabẖ ḏeh uḏẖranṯ sāḏẖ saraṇ Nānak. This precious body is saved and redeemed in the Sanctuary of the Holy, O Nanak, ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਜਪੰਤਿ ॥੪॥ हरि हरि हरि हरि हरि हरे जपंति ॥४॥ Har har har har har hare japanṯ. ||4|| chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||4|| ਭ੍ਰਿਤਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਚਰਣੰ ॥ भ्रितिआ प्रिअं बिस्राम चरणं ॥ Bẖariṯi▫ā pari▫aʼn bisrām cẖarṇaʼn. O Lover of Your devoted servants, Your Feet are a Sanctuary of Peace. ਗੰਭੀਰੰ ਊਚੈ ਸਰਬਗਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ ग्मभीरं ऊचै सरबगि अपारा ॥ Gambẖīraʼn ūcẖai sarbag apārā. Profound and Unfathomable, Lofty and Exalted, All-knowing and Infinite Lord God. ਸੁਭੰਤ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਗੁਣਗ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਪੂਰਨੰ ਬਹੁਲੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ सुभंत तुयं अचुत गुणग्यं पूरनं बहुलो क्रिपाला ॥ Subẖanṯ ṯu▫yaʼn acẖuṯ guṇga▫yaʼn pūranaʼn bahulo kirpālā. O Glorious, Eternal and Imperishable, Perfect and Abundantly Compassionate, ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣੰ ॥੫॥ अनाथ नाथे नानक सरणं ॥५॥ Anāth nāthe Nānak sarṇaʼn. ||5|| O Master of the masterless, Helper of the helpless, Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary. ||5|| ਮ੍ਰਿਗੀ ਪੇਖੰਤ ਬਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇਣ ਲਖ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਆਵਧਹ ॥ म्रिगी पेखंत बधिक प्रहारेण लख्य आवधह ॥ Marigī pekẖanṯ baḏẖik par▫hāreṇ lakẖ▫y āvḏẖah. Seeing the deer, the hunter aims his weapons. ਅਹੋ ਜਸ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਰਖੇਣ ਗੋਪਾਲਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੋਮ ਨ ਛੇਦ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ॥੬॥ अहो जस्य रखेण गोपालह नानक रोम न छेद्यते ॥६॥ Aho jas▫y rakẖeṇ gopālah Nānak rom na cẖẖed▫yṯe. ||6|| But if one is protected by the Lord of the World, O Nanak, not a hair on his head will be touched. ||6|| ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਕਾਰੀ ਸੇਵੰਤ ਸੂਰਾ ਚਤੁਰ ਦਿਸਹ ॥ बहु जतन करता बलवंत कारी सेवंत सूरा चतुर दिसह ॥ Baho jaṯan karṯā balvanṯ kārī sevanṯ sūrā cẖaṯur ḏisah. He may be surrounded on all four sides by servants and powerful warriors; ਬਿਖਮ ਥਾਨ ਬਸੰਤ ਊਚਹ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਕਦਾਂਚਹ ॥ बिखम थान बसंत ऊचह नह सिमरंत मरणं कदांचह ॥ Bikẖam thān basanṯ ūcẖah nah simranṯ marṇaʼn kaḏāʼncẖėh. he may dwell in a lofty place, difficult to approach, and never even think of death. ਹੋਵੰਤਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਟੀ ਸਾਸ ਅਕਰਖਤੇ ॥੭॥ होवंति आगिआ भगवान पुरखह नानक कीटी सास अकरखते ॥७॥ Hovanṯ āgi▫ā bẖagvān pukẖah Nānak kītī sās akarkẖaṯe. ||7|| But when the Order comes from the Primal Lord God, O Nanak, even an ant can take away his breath of life. ||7|| ਸਬਦੰ ਰਤੰ ਹਿਤੰ ਮਇਆ ਕੀਰਤੰ ਕਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੁਆ ॥ सबदं रतं हितं मइआ कीरतं कली करम क्रितुआ ॥ Sabḏaʼn raṯaʼn hiṯaʼn ma▫i▫ā kīrṯaʼn kalī karam kriṯu▫ā. To be imbued and attuned to the Word of the Shabad; to be kind and compassionate; to sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises - these are the most worthwhile actions in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ਭਗਵਾਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਥਾਨ੍ਯ੍ਯਿੰ ॥ भगवान रमणं सरबत्र थान्यिं ॥ Bẖagvān ramṇaʼn sarbaṯar thāni▫yaʼn. God is pervading and permeating all places. ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨੰ ਬਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਰਸਨਾ ॥ द्रिसट तुयं अमोघ दरसनं बसंत साध रसना ॥ Ḏarisat ṯu▫yaʼn amogẖ ḏarsanaʼn basanṯ sāḏẖ rasnā. So obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; He dwells upon the tongues of the Holy. ਮਿਟੰਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਰਾਗਤ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ॥ मिटंति तत्रागत भरम मोहं ॥ Mitanṯ ṯaṯrāgaṯ bẖaram mohaʼn. In this way, one's inner doubts and emotional attachments are dispelled. ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੮॥ हरि हरि हरि हरे नानक प्रिअं जापु जपना ॥८॥ Har har har hare Nānak pari▫aʼn jāp japnā. ||8|| O Nanak, meditate and chant the Name of the Beloved Lord, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||8|| ਘਟੰਤ ਰੂਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਦੀਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਰਵਿ ਸਸੀਅਰ ਨਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਤ੍ਰ ਗਗਨੰ ॥ घटंत रूपं घटंत दीपं घटंत रवि ससीअर नख्यत्र गगनं ॥ Gẖatanṯ rūpaʼn gẖatanṯ dīpaʼn gẖatanṯ rav sasī▫ar nakẖ▫yaṯar gaganaʼn. Beauty fades away, islands fade away, the sun, moon, stars and sky fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਸਿਖੰਡੰ ॥ घटंत बसुधा गिरि तर सिखंडं ॥ Gẖatanṯ basuḏẖā gir ṯar sikẖaʼndaʼn. The earth, mountains, forests and lands fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਲਲਨਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਹੀਤੰ ॥ घटंत ललना सुत भ्रात हीतं ॥ Gẖatanṯ lalnā suṯ bẖarāṯ hīṯaʼn. One's spouse, children, siblings and loved friends fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਕਨਿਕ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੰ ॥ घटंत कनिक मानिक माइआ स्वरूपं ॥ Gẖatanṯ kanik mānik mā▫i▫ā savrūpaʼn. Gold and jewels and the incomparable beauty of Maya fade away. ਨਹ ਘਟੰਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ॥ नह घटंत केवल गोपाल अचुत ॥ Nah gẖatanṯ keval gopāl acẖuṯ. Only the Eternal, Unchanging Lord does not fade away. ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ॥੯॥ असथिरं नानक साध जन ॥९॥ Asthiraʼn Nānak sāḏẖ jan. ||9|| O Nanak, only the humble Saints are steady and stable forever. ||9|| ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਨਾਸੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੰ ਧਰਮ ਲਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਿਣ ॥ सरणि संतं किलबिख नासं प्रापतं धरम लख्यिण ॥ Saraṇ sanṯaʼn kilbikẖ nāsaʼn parāpṯaʼn ḏẖaram lakẖ▫yiṇ. In the Sanctuary of the Saints, the sins are erased. The character of righteousness is received by that person, ਨਹ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਧਰਮੰ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਪਾਪੰ ॥ नह बिल्मब धरमं बिल्मब पापं ॥ Nah bilamb ḏẖarmaʼn bilamb pāpaʼn. Do not delay in practicing righteousness; delay in committing sins. ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਨਾਮੰ ਤਜੰਤ ਲੋਭੰ ॥ द्रिड़ंत नामं तजंत लोभं ॥ Ḏariṛ▫āʼnṯ nāmaʼn ṯajanṯ lobẖaʼn. Implant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within yourself, and abandon greed. ਮਿਰਤ ਮੋਹੰ ਅਲਪ ਬੁਧ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸਾਹੰ ॥ मिरत मोहं अलप बुध्यं रचंति बनिता बिनोद साहं ॥ Miraṯ mohaʼn alap buḏẖ▫yaʼn racẖanṯ baniṯā binoḏ sāhaʼn. The person of shallow understanding is dying in emotional attachment; he is engrossed in pursuits of pleasure with his wife. ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਮਾਧਵਹ ॥੧੦॥ नानक जिह सुप्रसंन माधवह ॥१०॥ Nānak jih suparsan māḏẖvah. ||10|| O Nanak, with whom the Lord is pleased and satisfied. ||10|| ਜੌਬਨ ਬਹਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਨਿਕ ਕੁੰਡਲਹ ॥ जौबन बहिक्रम कनिक कुंडलह ॥ Jouban bahikaram kanik kundlah. With youthful beauty and golden earrings, ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਸੋਭੰਤਿ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ਇਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਬ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਪਿਤੰ ॥ बचित्र मंदिर सोभंति बसत्रा इत्यंत माइआ ब्यापितं ॥ Bacẖiṯar manḏir sobẖanṯ basṯarā iṯ▫yanṯ mā▫i▫ā bi▫yāpiṯaʼn. wondrous mansions, decorations and clothes - this is how Maya clings to him. ਹੇ ਅਚੁਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋ ਭਗਵਾਨਏ ਨਮਹ ॥੧੧॥ हे अचुत सरणि संत नानक भो भगवानए नमह ॥११॥ He acẖuṯ saraṇ sanṯ Nānak bẖo bẖagvāna▫e namah. ||11|| O Eternal, Unchanging, Benevolent Lord God, O Sanctuary of the Saints, Nanak humbly bows to You. ||11|| ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਹਰਖੰ ਤ ਸੋਗੰ ਭੋਗੰ ਤ ਰੋਗੰ ॥ जनमं त मरणं हरखं त सोगं भोगं त रोगं ॥ Janmaʼn ṯa marṇaʼn harkẖaʼn ṯa sogaʼn bẖogaʼn ṯa rogaʼn. If there is birth, then there is death. If there is pleasure, then there is pain. If there is enjoyment, then there is disease. ਊਚੰ ਤ ਨੀਚੰ ਨਾਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਸੁ ਮੂਚੰ ॥ ऊचं त नीचं नान्हा सु मूचं ॥ Ūncẖaʼn ṯa nīcẖaʼn nānĥā so mūcẖaʼn. If there is high, then there is low. If there is small, then there is great. ਰਾਜੰ ਤ ਮਾਨੰ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੰ ਤ ਹੀਨੰ ॥ राजं त मानं अभिमानं त हीनं ॥ Rājaʼn ṯa mānaʼn abẖimānaʼn ṯa hīnaʼn. If there is power, then there is pride. If there is egotistical pride, then there will be a fall. ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਰਗੰ ਵਰਤੰਤਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੰ ॥ प्रविरति मारगं वरतंति बिनासनं ॥ Parviraṯ mārgaʼn varṯanṯ bināsanaʼn. Engrossed in worldly ways, one is ruined. ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਜਨਾਸਨੰ ॥੧੨॥ गोबिंद भजन साध संगेण असथिरं नानक भगवंत भजनासनं ॥१२॥ Gobinḏ bẖajan sāḏẖ sangeṇ asthiraʼn Nānak bẖagvanṯ bẖajnāsnaʼn. ||12|| Meditating and vibrating on the Lord of the Universe in the Company of the Holy, you shall become steady and stable. Nanak vibrates and meditates on the Lord God. ||12|| ਕਿਰਪੰਤ ਹਰੀਅੰ ਮਤਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੰ ॥ किरपंत हरीअं मति ततु गिआनं ॥ Kirpanṯ harī▫aʼn maṯ ṯaṯ gi▫ānaʼn. By the Grace of God, genuine understanding comes to the mind. ਬਿਗਸੀਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਿ ਬੁਧਾ ਕੁਸਲ ਥਾਨੰ ॥ बिगसीध्यि बुधा कुसल थानं ॥ Bigsīḏẖiy buḏẖā kusal thānaʼn. The intellect blossoms forth, and one finds a place in the realm of celestial bliss. ਬਸ੍ਯ੍ਯਿੰਤ ਰਿਖਿਅੰ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਮਾਨੰ ॥ बस्यिंत रिखिअं तिआगि मानं ॥ Bas▫yant rikẖi▫aʼn ṯi▫āg mānaʼn. The senses are brought under control, and pride is abandoned. ਸੀਤਲੰਤ ਰਿਦਯੰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਸੰਤ ਗਿਆਨੰ ॥ सीतलंत रिदयं द्रिड़ु संत गिआनं ॥ Sīṯlanṯ riḏ▫yaʼn ḏariṛ sanṯ gi▫ānaʼn. The heart is cooled and soothed, and the wisdom of the Saints is implanted within. ਰਹੰਤ ਜਨਮੰ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸ ਲੀਣਾ ॥ रहंत जनमं हरि दरस लीणा ॥ Rahanṯ janmaʼn har ḏaras līṇā. Reincarnation is ended, and the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan is obtained. ਬਾਜੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਣਾਂ ॥੧੩॥ बाजंत नानक सबद बीणां ॥१३॥ Bājanṯ Nānak sabaḏ bīṇāʼn. ||13|| O Nanak, the musical instrument of the Word of the Shabad vibrates and resounds within. ||13|| ਕਹੰਤ ਬੇਦਾ ਗੁਣੰਤ ਗੁਨੀਆ ਸੁਣੰਤ ਬਾਲਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਾ ॥ कहंत बेदा गुणंत गुनीआ सुणंत बाला बहु बिधि प्रकारा ॥ Kahanṯ beḏā guṇanṯ gunī▫ā suṇanṯ bālā baho biḏẖ parkārā. The Vedas preach and recount God's Glories; people hear them by various ways and means. ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਸੁਬਿਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ द्रिड़ंत सुबिदिआ हरि हरि क्रिपाला ॥ Ḏariṛ▫āʼnṯ subiḏi▫ā har har kirpālā. The Merciful Lord, Har, Har, implants spiritual wisdom within. ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਜਾਚੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੈਨਹਾਰ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥੧੪॥ नाम दानु जाचंत नानक दैनहार गुर गोपाला ॥१४॥ Nām ḏān jācẖanṯ Nānak ḏainhār gur gopālā. ||14|| Nanak begs for the Gift of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Guru is the Great Giver, the Lord of the World. ||14|| ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤਹ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਨਬੰਧਨਹ ॥ नह चिंता बनिता सुत मीतह प्रविरति माइआ सनबंधनह ॥ Nah cẖinṯā baniṯā suṯ mīṯah parviraṯ mā▫i▫ā sanbẖanḏẖnah. Do not worry about your spouse, children and friends. You are obsessed with your involvements in Maya. ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਹ ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਛੁ ਲੋਕ ਕਹ ॥ नह चिंता मात पित भ्रातह नह चिंता कछु लोक कह ॥ Nah cẖinṯā māṯ piṯ bẖarāṯah nah cẖinṯā kacẖẖ lok kah. Do not worry so much about your mother, father and siblings. Do not worry so much about other people. ਦਇਆਲ ਏਕ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਕਹ ॥੧੫॥ दइआल एक भगवान पुरखह नानक सरब जीअ प्रतिपालकह ॥१५॥ Ḏa▫i▫āl ek bẖagvān pukẖah Nānak sarab jī▫a parṯipālkėh. ||15|| The One Lord God is Kind and Compassionate, O Nanak. He is the Cherisher and Nurturer of all living beings. ||15|| ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਵਿਤੰ ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਚਿਤੰ ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਆਸਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰੰ ॥ अनित्य वितं अनित्य चितं अनित्य आसा बहु बिधि प्रकारं ॥ Aniṯ▫y viṯaʼn aniṯ▫y cẖiṯaʼn aniṯ▫y āsā baho biḏẖ parkāraʼn. Wealth is temporary; conscious existence is temporary; hopes of all sorts are temporary. ਅਨਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਹੇਤੰ ਅਹੰ ਬੰਧੰ ਭਰਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲਨੰ ਬਿਕਾਰੰ ॥ अनित्य हेतं अहं बंधं भरम माइआ मलनं बिकारं ॥ Aniṯ▫y heṯaʼn ahaʼn banḏẖaʼn bẖaram mā▫i▫ā malanaʼn bikāraʼn. The bonds of love, attachment, egotism, doubt, Maya and the pollution of corruption are temporary. ਫਿਰੰਤ ਜੋਨਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਜਠਰਾਗਨਿ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਲੀਣ ਬੁਧ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ॥ फिरंत जोनि अनेक जठरागनि नह सिमरंत मलीण बुध्यं ॥ Firanṯ jon anek jẖaṯẖrāgan nah simranṯ malīṇ buḏẖ▫yaʼn. The mortal passes through the fire of the womb of reincarnation countless times. He does not remember the Lord in meditation; his understanding is polluted. ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਰਤ ਮਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਮਹ ॥੧੬॥ हे गोबिंद करत मइआ नानक पतित उधारण साध संगमह ॥१६॥ He gobinḏ karaṯ ma▫i▫ā Nānak paṯiṯ uḏẖāraṇ sāḏẖ sangmah. ||16|| O Lord of the Universe, when You grant Your Grace, even sinners are saved. Nanak dwells in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||16|| ਗਿਰੰਤ ਗਿਰਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਤਾਲੰ ਜਲੰਤ ਦੇਦੀਪ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਬੈਸ੍ਵਾਂਤਰਹ ॥ गिरंत गिरि पतित पातालं जलंत देदीप्य बैस्वांतरह ॥ Giranṯ gir paṯiṯ pāṯālaʼn jalanṯ ḏeḏīp▫y baisvāʼnṯarėh. You may drop down from the mountains, and fall into the nether regions of the underworld, or be burnt in the blazing fire, ਬਹੰਤਿ ਅਗਾਹ ਤੋਯੰ ਤਰੰਗੰ ਦੁਖੰਤ ਗ੍ਰਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣਹ ॥ बहंति अगाह तोयं तरंगं दुखंत ग्रह चिंता जनमं त मरणह ॥ Bahanṯ agāh ṯo▫yaʼn ṯarangaʼn ḏukẖanṯ garah cẖinṯā janmaʼn ṯa marṇah. or swept away by the unfathomable waves of water; but the worst pain of all is household anxiety, which is the source of the cycle of death and rebirth. ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਧਨੰ ਨ ਸਿਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਸਬਦ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੧੭॥ अनिक साधनं न सिध्यते नानक असथ्मभं असथ्मभं असथ्मभं सबद साध स्वजनह ॥१७॥ Anik sāḏẖanaʼn na siḏẖ▫yaṯai Nānak asthambẖaʼn asthambẖaʼn asthambẖaʼn sabaḏ sāḏẖ savajniĥ. ||17|| No matter what you do, you cannot break its bonds, O Nanak. Man's only Support, Anchor and Mainstay is the Word of the Shabad, and the Holy, Friendly Saints. ||17|| ਘੋਰ ਦੁਖ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਅਨਿਕ ਹਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਾਰਿਦ੍ਰੰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਦੰ ॥ घोर दुख्यं अनिक हत्यं जनम दारिद्रं महा बिख्यादं ॥ Gẖor ḏukẖ▫yaʼn anik haṯ▫yaʼn janam ḏāriḏaraʼn mahā bikẖ▫yāḏʼn. Excruciating pain, countless killings, reincarnation, poverty and terrible misery ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੰ ਗੁਣ ਰਮੰਤ ਅਘ ਖੰਡਨਹ ॥ अंधकार सिमरत प्रकासं गुण रमंत अघ खंडनह ॥ Anḏẖkār simraṯ parkāsaʼn guṇ ramanṯ agẖ kẖandnah. Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, the darkness is illuminated. Dwelling on His Glorious Praises, the ugly sins are destroyed. ਮਿਟੰਤ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਵਕ ਕਾਸਟ ਭਸਮੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥੧੮॥ मिटंत सगल सिमरंत हरि नाम नानक जैसे पावक कासट भसमं करोति ॥१८॥ Mitanṯ sagal simranṯ har nām Nānak jaise pāvak kāsat bẖasmaʼn karoṯ. ||18|| are all destroyed by meditating in remembrance on the Lord's Name, O Nanak, just as fire reduces piles of wood to ashes. ||18|| ਰਿਦ ਬਸੰਤਿ ਭੈ ਭੀਤ ਦੂਤਹ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤ ਮਹਾ ਨਿਰਮਲਹ ॥ रिद बसंति भै भीत दूतह करम करत महा निरमलह ॥ Riḏ basanṯ bẖai bẖīṯ ḏūṯah karam karaṯ mahā niramlėh. Enshrining the Lord deep within the heart, and with the immaculate karma of doing good deeds, one strikes fear into the demons. ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਰਹੰਤ ਸ੍ਰੋਤਾ ਸੁਖ ਸਮੂਹ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥ जनम मरण रहंत स्रोता सुख समूह अमोघ दरसनह ॥ Janam maraṇ rahanṯ saroṯā sukẖ samūh amogẖ ḏarasnėh. The cycle of coming and going in reincarnation is ended, absolute peace is obtained, and the Fruitful Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ਸਰਣਿ ਜੋਗੰ ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਖੇਮੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥੧੯॥ सरणि जोगं संत प्रिअ नानक सो भगवान खेमं करोति ॥१९॥ Saraṇ jogaʼn sanṯ pari▫a Nānak so bẖagvān kẖemaʼn karoṯ. ||19|| He is Potent to give Protection, He is the Lover of His Saints. O Nanak, the Lord God blesses all with bliss. ||19|| ਪਾਛੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ਅਗ੍ਰਣੀਵਹ ਨਿਰਾਸੰ ਆਸ ਪੂਰਨਹ ॥ पाछं करोति अग्रणीवह निरासं आस पूरनह ॥ Pācẖẖaʼn karoṯ agarṇīvėh nirāsaʼn ās pūrnah. Those who were left behind - the Lord brings them to the front. He fulfills the hopes of the hopeless. ਨਿਰਧਨ ਭਯੰ ਧਨਵੰਤਹ ਰੋਗੀਅੰ ਰੋਗ ਖੰਡਨਹ ॥ निरधन भयं धनवंतह रोगीअं रोग खंडनह ॥ Nirḏẖan bẖa▫yaʼn ḏẖanvanṯah rogī▫aʼn rog kẖandnah. He makes the poor rich, and cures the illnesses of the ill. ਭਗਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਾਨੰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥ भगत्यं भगति दानं राम नाम गुण कीरतनह ॥ Bẖagaṯ▫yaʼn bẖagaṯ ḏānaʼn rām nām guṇ kīraṯnėh. He blesses His devotees with devotion. They sing the Kirtan of the Praises of the Lord's Name. ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾਤਾਰਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿੰ ਨ ਲਭ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ॥੨੦॥ पारब्रहम पुरख दातारह नानक गुर सेवा किं न लभ्यते ॥२०॥ Pārbarahm purakẖ ḏāṯārėh Nānak gur sevā kiʼn na labẖ▫yaṯai. ||20|| O Nanak, those who serve the Guru find the Supreme Lord God, the Great Giver||20|| ਅਧਰੰ ਧਰੰ ਧਾਰਣਹ ਨਿਰਧਨੰ ਧਨ ਨਾਮ ਨਰਹਰਹ ॥ अधरं धरं धारणह निरधनं धन नाम नरहरह ॥ Aḏẖraʼn ḏẖaraʼn ḏẖārṇah nirḏẖanaʼn ḏẖan nām narharėh. He gives Support to the unsupported. The Name of the Lord is the Wealth of the poor. ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਬਲਹੀਣ ਬਲ ਕੇਸਵਹ ॥ अनाथ नाथ गोबिंदह बलहीण बल केसवह ॥ Anāth nāth gobinḏah balhīṇ bal kesvah. The Lord of the Universe is the Master of the masterless; the Beautiful-haired Lord is the Power of the weak. ਸਰਬ ਭੂਤ ਦਯਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ਦੀਨ ਬਾਂਧਵ ਦਾਮੋਦਰਹ ॥ सरब भूत दयाल अचुत दीन बांधव दामोदरह ॥ Sarab bẖūṯ ḏa▫yāl acẖuṯ ḏīn bāʼnḏẖav ḏāmoḏarėh. The Lord is Merciful to all beings, Eternal and Unchanging, the Family of the meek and humble. ਸਰਬਗ੍ਯ੍ਯ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨਹ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮਯਹ ॥ सरबग्य पूरन पुरख भगवानह भगति वछल करुणा मयह ॥ Sarabga▫y pūran purakẖ bẖagvānėh bẖagaṯ vacẖẖal karuṇā ma▫yėh. The All-knowing, Perfect, Primal Lord God is the Lover of His devotees, the Embodiment of Mercy.
