ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ प्रभाती महला ५ ॥ Parbẖāṯī mėhlā 5. Prabhaatee, Fifth Mehl: ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥ मन महि क्रोधु महा अहंकारा ॥ Man mėh kroḏẖ mahā ahaʼnkārā. Within the mind dwell anger and massive ego. ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥ पूजा करहि बहुतु बिसथारा ॥ Pūjā karahi bahuṯ bisthārā. Worship services are performed with great pomp and ceremony. ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਤਨਿ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਏ ॥ करि इसनानु तनि चक्र बणाए ॥ Kar isnān ṯan cẖakar baṇā▫e. Ritual cleansing baths are taken, and sacred marks are applied to the body. ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥ अंतर की मलु कब ही न जाए ॥१॥ Anṯar kī mal kab hī na jā▫e. ||1|| But still, the filth and pollution within never depart. ||1|| ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ इतु संजमि प्रभु किन ही न पाइआ ॥ Iṯ sanjam parabẖ kin hī na pā▫i▫ā. No one has ever found God in this way. ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ भगउती मुद्रा मनु मोहिआ माइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Bẖag▫uṯī muḏrā man mohi▫ā mā▫i▫ā. ||1|| rahā▫o. The sacred mudras - ritualistic hand gestures - are made, but the mind remains enticed by Maya. ||1||Pause|| ਪਾਪ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੰਚਾਂ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਰੇ ॥ पाप करहि पंचां के बसि रे ॥ Pāp karahi pancẖāʼn ke bas re. They commit sins, under the influence of the five thieves. ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਉਤਰੇ ॥ तीरथि नाइ कहहि सभि उतरे ॥ Ŧirath nā▫e kahėh sabẖ uṯre. They bathe at sacred shrines, and claim that everything has been washed off. ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸੰਕ ॥ बहुरि कमावहि होइ निसंक ॥ Bahur kamāvėh ho▫e nisank. Then they commit them again, without fear of the consequences. ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਾਲੰਕ ॥੨॥ जम पुरि बांधि खरे कालंक ॥२॥ Jam pur bāʼnḏẖ kẖare kālank. ||2|| The sinners are bound and gagged, and taken to the City of Death. ||2|| ਘੂਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਬਜਾਵਹਿ ਤਾਲਾ ॥ घूघर बाधि बजावहि ताला ॥ Gẖūgẖar bāḏẖ bajāvėh ṯālā. The ankle-bells shake and the cymbals vibrate, ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥ अंतरि कपटु फिरहि बेताला ॥ Anṯar kapat firėh beṯālā. but those who have deception within wander lost like demons. ਪੂੰਅਰ ਤਾਪ ਗੇਰੀ ਕੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥ पूंअर ताप गेरी के बसत्रा ॥ Pūʼnar ṯāp gerī ke basṯarā. You worship fire and wear saffron colored robes. ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ॥੩॥ प्रभु सभ किछु जानै जिनि तू कीआ ॥३॥ Parabẖ sabẖ kicẖẖ jānai jin ṯū kī▫ā. ||3|| God, who created you, knows everything. ||3|| ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ॥ वरमी मारी सापु न मूआ ॥ varmī mārī sāp na mū▫ā. By destroying its hole, the snake is not killed. ਅਪਦਾ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਸਤਾ ॥ अपदा का मारिआ ग्रिह ते नसता ॥ Apḏā kā māri▫ā garih ṯe nasṯā. Stung by your misfortune, you abandon your home. ਦੇਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਹਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥ देसु छोडि परदेसहि धाइआ ॥ Ḏes cẖẖod parḏesėh ḏẖā▫i▫ā. Leaving your own country, you wander in foreign lands. ਪੰਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਨਾਲੇ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥ पंच चंडाल नाले लै आइआ ॥४॥ Pancẖ cẖandāl nāle lai ā▫i▫ā. ||4|| But you bring the five rejects with you. ||4|| ਕਾਨ ਫਰਾਇ ਹਿਰਾਏ ਟੂਕਾ ॥ कान फराइ हिराए टूका ॥ Kān farā▫e hirā▫e tūkā. You have split your ears, and now you steal crumbs. ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਾ ॥ घरि घरि मांगै त्रिपतावन ते चूका ॥ Gẖar gẖar māʼngai ṯaripṯāvan ṯe cẖūkā. You beg from door to door, but you fail to be satisfied. ਬਨਿਤਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਦ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ बनिता छोडि बद नदरि पर नारी ॥ Baniṯā cẖẖod baḏ naḏar par nārī. You have abandoned your own wife, but now you sneak glances at other women. ਵੇਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖਿਆਰੀ ॥੫॥ वेसि न पाईऐ महा दुखिआरी ॥५॥ ves na pā▫ī▫ai mahā ḏukẖi▫ārī. ||5|| God is not found by wearing religious robes; you are utterly miserable! ||5|| ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਮੋਨੀ ॥ बोलै नाही होइ बैठा मोनी ॥ Bolai nāhī ho▫e baiṯẖā monī. He does not speak; he is on silence. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਲਪ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਜੋਨੀ ॥ अंतरि कलप भवाईऐ जोनी ॥ Anṯar kalap bẖavā▫ī▫ai jonī. But he is filled with desire; he is made to wander in reincarnation. ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਰਹਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਹਤਾ ॥ अंन ते रहता दुखु देही सहता ॥ Ann ṯe rahṯā ḏukẖ ḏehī sahṯā. Abstaining from food, his body suffers in pain. ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਮਮਤਾ ॥੬॥ हुकमु न बूझै विआपिआ ममता ॥६॥ Hukam na būjẖai vi▫āpi▫ā mamṯā. ||6|| He does not realize the Hukam of the Lord's Command; he is afflicted by possessiveness. ||6|| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥ बिनु सतिगुर किनै न पाई परम गते ॥ Bin saṯgur kinai na pā▫ī param gaṯe. Without the True Guru, no one has attained the supreme status. ਪੂਛਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੇ ॥ पूछहु सगल बेद सिम्रिते ॥ Pūcẖẖahu sagal beḏ simriṯe. Go ahead and ask all the Vedas and the Simritees. ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥ जिउ बालू घर ठउर न ठाई ॥७॥ Ji▫o bālū gẖar ṯẖa▫ur na ṯẖā▫ī. ||7|| They are like a house of sand, which cannot stand. ||7|| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥ मनमुख करम करै अजाई ॥ Manmukẖ karam karai ajā▫ī. The self-willed manmukhs do useless deeds. ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਏ ਗੋੁਬਿੰਦ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ जिस नो भए गोबिंद दइआला ॥ Jis no bẖa▫e gobinḏ ḏa▫i▫ālā. One unto whom the Lord of the Universe becomes Merciful, ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਪਾਲਾ ॥ गुर का बचनु तिनि बाधिओ पाला ॥ Gur kā bacẖan ṯin bāḏẖi▫o pālā. sews the Word of the Guru's Shabad into his robes. ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ कोटि मधे कोई संतु दिखाइआ ॥ Kot maḏẖe ko▫ī sanṯ ḏikẖā▫i▫ā. Out of millions, it is rare that such a Saint is seen. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥ नानकु तिन कै संगि तराइआ ॥८॥ Nānak ṯin kai sang ṯarā▫i▫ā. ||8|| O Nanak, with him, we are carried across. ||8|| ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਤਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ जे होवै भागु ता दरसनु पाईऐ ॥ Je hovai bẖāg ṯā ḏarsan pā▫ī▫ai. If one has such good destiny, then the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is obtained. ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਤਰਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥ आपि तरै सभु कुट्मबु तराईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ दूजा ॥२॥ Āp ṯarai sabẖ kutamb ṯarā▫ī▫ai. ||1|| rahā▫o ḏūjā. ||2|| He saves himself, and carries across all his family as well. ||1||SECOND PAUSE||2||
