ਆਖਣਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥ आखणा सुनणा नामु अधारु ॥ Aakʰ▫ṇaa sunṇaa naam aḋʰaar. To chant and listen to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my Support. ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ प्रभाती महला १ ॥ Parbʰaaṫee mėhlaa 1. Prabhaatee, First Mehl: ਜਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥ जिउ मनमुखि दूजै पति खोई ॥ Ji▫o manmukʰ ḋoojæ paṫ kʰo▫ee. The self-willed Manmukh, caught in duality, loses his honor. ਧੰਧਾ ਛੁਟਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ॥ धंधा छुटकि गइआ वेकारु ॥ Ḋʰanḋʰaa chʰutak ga▫i▫aa vékaar. Worthless entanglements are ended and gone. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ बिनु नावै मै अवरु न कोई ॥१॥ Bin naavæ mæ avar na ko▫ee. ||1|| Except for the Name, I have no other at all. ||1|| ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਲਾਜ ਨਹੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਡੈ ਬਾਰੋ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ आवत जात लाज नही लागै बिनु गुर बूडै बारो बार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Aavaṫ jaaṫ laaj nahee laagæ bin gur boodæ baaro baar. ||1|| rahaa▫o. Aren’t you ashamed of your comings and goings in reincarnation? Without the Guru, you shall drown, over and over again. ||1||Pause|| ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਅੰਧੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰ ॥ सुणि मन अंधे मूरख गवार ॥ Suṇ man anḋʰé moorakʰ gavaar. Listen, O blind, foolish, idiotic mind. ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥ इसु मन माइआ मोहि बिनासु ॥ Is man maa▫i▫aa mohi binaas. This mind is ruined by its attachment to Maya. ਧੁਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਾਸੁ ॥ धुरि हुकमु लिखिआ तां कहीऐ कासु ॥ Ḋʰur hukam likʰi▫aa ṫaaⁿ kahee▫æ kaas. The Command of the Primal Lord is preordained. Before whom should I cry? ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨੑੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ गुरमुखि विरला चीन्है कोई ॥ Gurmukʰ virlaa cheenĥæ ko▫ee. Only a few, being Gurmukh, understand this. ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥ नाम बिहूना मुकति न होई ॥२॥ Naam bihoonaa mukaṫ na ho▫ee. ||2|| Without the Naam, no one is liberated. ||2|| ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਡੋਲੈ ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀ ॥ भ्रमि भ्रमि डोलै लख चउरासी ॥ Bʰaram bʰaram dolæ lakʰ cha▫uraasee. People wander lost, staggering and stumbling through 8.4 million incarnations. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਝੇ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ ॥ बिनु गुर बूझे जम की फासी ॥ Bin gur boojʰé jam kee faasee. Without knowing the Guru, they cannot escape the noose of Death. ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਊਭਿ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥ इहु मनूआ खिनु खिनु ऊभि पइआलि ॥ Ih manoo▫aa kʰin kʰin oobʰ pa▫i▫aal. This mind, from one moment to the next, goes from the heavens to the underworld. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮੑਾਲਿ ॥੩॥ गुरमुखि छूटै नामु सम्हालि ॥३॥ Gurmukʰ chʰootæ naam samĥaal. ||3|| The Gurmukh contemplates the Naam, and is released. ||3|| ਆਪੇ ਸਦੇ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ आपे सदे ढिल न होइ ॥ Aapé saḋé dʰil na ho▫é. When God sends His Summons, there is no time to delay. ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ सबदि मरै सहिला जीवै सोइ ॥ Sabaḋ maræ sahilaa jeevæ so▫é. When one dies in the Word of the Shabad, he lives in peace. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ बिनु गुर सोझी किसै न होइ ॥ Bin gur sojʰee kisæ na ho▫é. Without the Guru, no one understands. ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ पूरा सतिगुरु सहजि समावै ॥ Pooraa saṫgur sahj samaavæ. Through the Perfect True Guru, one is intuitively absorbed into the Lord. ਝਗੜੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ झगड़ु चुकावै हरि गुण गावै ॥ Jʰagaṛ chukʰaavæ har guṇ gaavæ. Inner conflict comes to an end, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ਆਪੇ ਕਰੈ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥ आपे करै करावै सोइ ॥४॥ Aapé karæ karaavæ so▫é. ||4|| The Lord Himself acts, and inspires all to act. ||4|| ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਤ ਤਉ ਠਹਰਾਵੈ ॥ इहु मनु डोलत तउ ठहरावै ॥ Ih man dolaṫ ṫa▫o tʰėhraavæ. This wobbling, unsteady mind is stabilized, ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੫॥ सचु करणी करि कार कमावै ॥५॥ Sach karṇee kar kaar kamaavæ. ||5|| and one lives the lifestyle of true actions. ||5|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੂਠਾ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ अंतरि जूठा किउ सुचि होइ ॥ Anṫar jootʰaa ki▫o such ho▫é. If someone is false within his own self, then how can he be pure? ਸਬਦੀ ਧੋਵੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥ सबदी धोवै विरला कोइ ॥ Sabḋee ḋʰovæ virlaa ko▫é. How rare are those who wash with the Shabad. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ गुरमुखि कोई सचु कमावै ॥ Gurmukʰ ko▫ee sach kamaavæ. How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, live the Truth. ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥੬॥ आवणु जाणा ठाकि रहावै ॥६॥ Aavaṇ jaaṇaa tʰaak rahaavæ. ||6|| Their comings and goings in reincarnation are over and done. ||6|| ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ भउ खाणा पीणा सुखु सारु ॥ Bʰa▫o kʰaaṇaa peeṇaa sukʰ saar. Those who eat and drink the Fear of God, find the most excellent peace. ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰੁ ॥ हरि जन संगति पावै पारु ॥ Har jan sangaṫ paavæ paar. Associating with the humble servants of the Lord, they are carried across. ਸਚੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਾਵੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ सचु बोलै बोलावै पिआरु ॥ Sach bolæ bolaavæ pi▫aar. They speak the Truth, and lovingly inspire others to speak it as well. ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੭॥ गुर का सबदु करणी है सारु ॥७॥ Gur kaa sabaḋ karṇee hæ saar. ||7|| The Word of the Guru’s Shabad is the most excellent occupation. ||7|| ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ हरि जसु करमु धरमु पति पूजा ॥ Har jas karam ḋʰaram paṫ poojaa. Those who take the Lord’s Praises as their karma and Dharma, their honor and worship service - ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਭੂੰਜਾ ॥ काम क्रोध अगनी महि भूंजा ॥ Kaam kroḋʰ agnee mėh bʰooⁿjaa. burn away their lust and anger in fire. ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜਾ ॥ हरि रसु चाखिआ तउ मनु भीजा ॥ Har ras chaakʰi▫aa ṫa▫o man bʰeejaa. They taste the sublime essence of the Lord, and their minds are drenched with it. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ राम नामु जपि अंतरि पूजा ॥ Raam naam jap anṫar poojaa. Chant the Lord’s Name, and worship Him deep within your being. ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੮॥੫॥ प्रणवति नानकु अवरु न दूजा ॥८॥५॥ Paraṇvaṫ Naanak avar na ḋoojaa. ||8||5|| Prays Nanak, there is no other at all. ||8||5||
