ਮਰਣ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ मरण मुकति गति सार न जानै ॥ Maraṇ mukaṯ gaṯ sār na jānai. You do not understand the nature of death and liberation. ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मलार महला १ ॥ Malār mėhlā 1. Malaar, First Mehl: ਕੰਠੇ ਬੈਠੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ कंठे बैठी गुर सबदि पछानै ॥१॥ Kanṯẖe baiṯẖī gur sabaḏ pacẖẖānai. ||1|| You are sitting on the river-bank; realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1|| ਤੂ ਕੈਸੇ ਆੜਿ ਫਾਥੀ ਜਾਲਿ ॥ तू कैसे आड़ि फाथी जालि ॥ Ŧū kaise āṛ fāthī jāl. You stork! - how were you caught in the net? ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ अलखु न जाचहि रिदै सम्हालि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Alakẖ na jācẖėh riḏai samĥāl. ||1|| rahā▫o. You do not remember in your heart the Unseen Lord God. ||1||Pause|| ਏਕ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਜੀਆ ਖਾਹੀ ॥ एक जीअ कै जीआ खाही ॥ Ėk jī▫a kai jī▫ā kẖāhī. For your one life, you consume many lives. ਜਲਿ ਤਰਤੀ ਬੂਡੀ ਜਲ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥ जलि तरती बूडी जल माही ॥२॥ Jal ṯarṯī būdī jal māhī. ||2|| You were supposed to swim in the water, but you are drowning in it instead. ||2|| ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਕੀਏ ਪ੍ਰਤਪਾਨੀ ॥ सरब जीअ कीए प्रतपानी ॥ Sarab jī▫a kī▫e paraṯpānī. You have tormented all beings. ਜਬ ਪਕੜੀ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨੀ ॥੩॥ जब पकड़ी तब ही पछुतानी ॥३॥ Jab pakṛī ṯab hī pacẖẖuṯānī. ||3|| When Death seizes you, then you shall regret and repent. ||3|| ਜਬ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਸ ਪੜੀ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ जब गलि फास पड़ी अति भारी ॥ Jab gal fās paṛī aṯ bẖārī. When the heavy noose is placed around your neck, ਊਡਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਪੰਖ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥ ऊडि न साकै पंख पसारी ॥४॥ Ūd na sākai pankẖ pasārī. ||4|| you may spread your wings, but you shall not be able to fly. ||4|| ਰਸਿ ਚੂਗਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਾਰਿ ॥ रसि चूगहि मनमुखि गावारि ॥ Ras cẖūgėh manmukẖ gāvār. You enjoy the tastes and flavors, you foolish self-willed manmukh. ਫਾਥੀ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੫॥ फाथी छूटहि गुण गिआन बीचारि ॥५॥ Fāthī cẖẖūtėh guṇ gi▫ān bīcẖār. ||5|| You are trapped. You can only be saved by virtuous conduct, spiritual wisdom and contemplation. ||5|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਤੂਟੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥ सतिगुरु सेवि तूटै जमकालु ॥ Saṯgur sev ṯūtai jamkāl. Serving the True Guru, you will shatter the Messenger of Death. ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੁ ॥੬॥ हिरदै साचा सबदु सम्हालु ॥६॥ Hirḏai sācẖā sabaḏ samĥāl. ||6|| In your heart, dwell on the True Word of the Shabad. ||6|| ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ गुरमति साची सबदु है सारु ॥ Gurmaṯ sācẖī sabaḏ hai sār. The Guru's Teachings, the True Word of the Shabad, is excellent and sublime. ਸੇ ਦੁਖ ਆਗੈ ਜਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸੇ ॥ से दुख आगै जि भोग बिलासे ॥ Se ḏukẖ āgai jė bẖog bilāse. One who is obsessed with enjoying pleasures here, shall suffer in pain hereafter. ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੭॥ हरि का नामु रखै उरि धारि ॥७॥ Har kā nām rakẖai ur ḏẖār. ||7|| Keep the Name of the Lord enshrined in your heart. ||7|| ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥ नानक मुकति नही बिनु नावै साचे ॥८॥२॥५॥ Nānak mukaṯ nahī bin nāvai sācẖe. ||8||2||5|| O Nanak, there is no liberation without the True Name. ||8||2||5||
