ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥ Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ. One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਘਰੁ ੨ मलार महला १ असटपदीआ घरु २ Malār mėhlā 1 asatpaḏī▫ā gẖar 2 Malaar, First Mehl, Ashtapadees, Second House: ਡੂਗਰੁ ਊਚਉ ਗੜੁ ਪਾਤਾਲਿ ॥ डूगरु ऊचउ गड़ु पातालि ॥ Dūgar ūcẖa▫o gaṛ pāṯāl. the lofty mountains and the caverns of the underworld. ਸਾਗਰੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ सागरु सीतलु गुर सबद वीचारि ॥ Sāgar sīṯal gur sabaḏ vīcẖār. Contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the oceans become calm. ਅਖਲੀ ਊਂਡੀ ਜਲੁ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ अखली ऊंडी जलु भर नालि ॥ Akẖlī ūʼndī jal bẖar nāl. The earth bends under the weight of the water, ਮਾਰਗੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ मारगु मुकता हउमै मारि ॥१॥ Mārag mukṯā ha▫umai mār. ||1|| The path of liberation is found by subduing the ego. ||1|| ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ॥ मै अंधुले नावै की जोति ॥ Mai anḏẖule nāvai kī joṯ. I am blind; I seek the Light of the Name. ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਿ ਚਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭੈ ਭੇਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ नाम अधारि चला गुर कै भै भेति ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Nām aḏẖār cẖalā gur kai bẖai bẖeṯ. ||1|| rahā▫o. I take the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. I walk on the path of mystery of the Guru's Fear. ||1||Pause|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਪਾਧਰੁ ਜਾਣਿ ॥ सतिगुर सबदी पाधरु जाणि ॥ Saṯgur sabḏī pāḏẖar jāṇ. Through the Shabad, the Word of the True Guru, the Path is known. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਤਕੀਐ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਾਣਿ ॥ गुर कै तकीऐ साचै ताणि ॥ Gur kai ṯakī▫ai sācẖai ṯāṇ. With the Guru's Support, one is blessed with the strength of the True Lord. ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਸਿ ਰੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਬਾਣਿ ॥ नामु सम्हालसि रूड़्ही बाणि ॥ Nām samĥālas rūṛĥī bāṇ. Dwell on the Naam, and realize the Beauteous Word of His Bani. ਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਡੂੰਗਰੁ ਨ ਊਚੀ ਧਾਰ ॥ ना जलु डूंगरु न ऊची धार ॥ Nā jal dūngar na ūcẖī ḏẖār. There is no ocean of water, no mountain ranges rising up. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਾਮ ਆਧਾਰ ॥ गुर कै सबदि नाम आधार ॥ Gur kai sabaḏ nām āḏẖār. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I take the Naam as my Support. ਊਡਾਂ ਬੈਸਾ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥ ऊडां बैसा एक लिव तार ॥ Ūdāʼn baisā ek liv ṯār. Flying high or sitting down, I am lovingly focused on the One Lord. ਥੈਂ ਭਾਵੈ ਦਰੁ ਲਹਸਿ ਪਿਰਾਣਿ ॥੨॥ थैं भावै दरु लहसि पिराणि ॥२॥ Thaiʼn bẖāvai ḏar lahas pirāṇ. ||2|| If it is Your Will, Lord, You lead me to find Your Door. ||2|| ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਤਹ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਚਾਲਣਹਾਰ ॥੩॥ निज घरि वासा तह मगु न चालणहार ॥३॥ Nij gẖar vāsā ṯah mag na cẖālaṇhār. ||3|| I dwell within the home of my own inner being, where there is no path and no one travelling on it. ||3|| ਜਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬੀਜਉ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ जितु घरि वसहि तूहै बिधि जाणहि बीजउ महलु न जापै ॥ Jiṯ gẖar vasėh ṯūhai biḏẖ jāṇėh bīja▫o mahal na jāpai. You alone know the way to that House in which You dwell. No one else knows the Mansion of Your Presence. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸਮਝ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਦਬਿਆ ਛਾਪੈ ॥ सतिगुर बाझहु समझ न होवी सभु जगु दबिआ छापै ॥ Saṯgur bājẖahu samajẖ na hovī sabẖ jag ḏabi▫ā cẖẖāpai. Without the True Guru, there is no understanding. The whole world is buried under its nightmare. ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਤਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ करण पलाव करै बिललातउ बिनु गुर नामु न जापै ॥ Karaṇ palāv karai billaṯa▫o bin gur nām na jāpai. The mortal tries all sorts of things, and weeps and wails, but without the Guru, he does not know the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ਪਲ ਪੰਕਜ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਏ ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ॥੪॥ पल पंकज महि नामु छडाए जे गुर सबदु सिञापै ॥४॥ Pal pankaj mėh nām cẖẖadā▫e je gur sabaḏ siñāpai. ||4|| In the twinkling of an eye, the Naam saves him, if he realizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||4|| ਇਕਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਵਾਰ ॥ इकि मूरख अंधे मुगध गवार ॥ Ik mūrakẖ anḏẖe mugaḏẖ gavār. Some are foolish, blind, stupid and ignorant. ਇਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭੈ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰ ॥ इकि सतिगुर कै भै नाम अधार ॥ Ik saṯgur kai bẖai nām aḏẖār. Some, through fear of the True Guru, take the Support of the Naam. ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰ ॥ साची बाणी मीठी अम्रित धार ॥ Sācẖī baṇī mīṯẖī amriṯ ḏẖār. The True Word of His Bani is sweet, the source of ambrosial nectar. ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਤੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰ ॥੫॥ जिनि पीती तिसु मोख दुआर ॥५॥ Jin pīṯī ṯis mokẖ ḏu▫ār. ||5|| Whoever drinks it in, finds the Door of Salvation. ||5|| ਨਾਮੁ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ नामु भै भाइ रिदै वसाही गुर करणी सचु बाणी ॥ Nām bẖai bẖā▫e riḏai vasāhī gur karṇī sacẖ baṇī. One who, through the love and fear of God, enshrines the Naam within his heart, acts according to the Guru's Instructions and knows the True Bani. ਇੰਦੁ ਵਰਸੈ ਧਰਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥ इंदु वरसै धरति सुहावी घटि घटि जोति समाणी ॥ Inḏ varsai ḏẖaraṯ suhāvī gẖat gẖat joṯ samāṇī. When the clouds release their rain, the earth becomes beautiful; God's Light permeates each and every heart. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਣੀ ॥੬॥ सतिगुर बाझहु घोर अंधारा डूबि मुए बिनु पाणी ॥६॥ Saṯgur bājẖahu gẖor anḏẖārā dūb mu▫e bin pāṇī. ||6|| Without the True Guru, there is utter darkness; they drown there, even without water. ||6|| ਕਾਲਰਿ ਬੀਜਸਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਐਸੀ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਕੀ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ॥ कालरि बीजसि दुरमति ऐसी निगुरे की नीसाणी ॥ Kālar bījas ḏurmaṯ aisī nigure kī nīsāṇī. The evil-minded ones plant their seed in the barren soil; such is the sign of those who have no Guru. ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਰਜਾਇ ॥ जो किछु कीनो सु प्रभू रजाइ ॥ Jo kicẖẖ kīno so parabẖū rajā▫e. Whatever God does, is by His Own Will. ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ जो धुरि लिखिआ सु मेटणा न जाइ ॥ Jo ḏẖur likẖi▫ā so metṇā na jā▫e. That which is pre-ordained cannot be erased. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਬਾਧਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ हुकमे बाधा कार कमाइ ॥ Hukme bāḏẖā kār kamā▫e. Bound to the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the mortal does his deeds. ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੭॥ एक सबदि राचै सचि समाइ ॥७॥ Ėk sabaḏ rācẖai sacẖ samā▫e. ||7|| Permeated by the One Word of the Shabad, the mortal is immersed in Truth. ||7|| ਚਹੁ ਦਿਸਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਹੁ ਦਿਸਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਤਾਲੰ ॥ चहु दिसि हुकमु वरतै प्रभ तेरा चहु दिसि नाम पतालं ॥ Cẖahu ḏis hukam varṯai parabẖ ṯerā cẖahu ḏis nām paṯālaʼn. Your Command, O God, rules in the four directions; Your Name pervades the four corners of the nether regions as well. ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੈਆਲੰ ॥ सभ महि सबदु वरतै प्रभ साचा करमि मिलै बैआलं ॥ Sabẖ mėh sabaḏ varṯai parabẖ sācẖā karam milai be▫ālaʼn. The True Word of the Shabad is pervading amongst all. By His Grace, the Eternal One unites us with Himself. ਜਾਂਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਊਭੌ ਖੁਧਿਆ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਕਾਲੰ ॥ जांमणु मरणा दीसै सिरि ऊभौ खुधिआ निद्रा कालं ॥ Jāʼnmaṇ marṇā ḏīsai sir ūbẖou kẖuḏẖi▫ā niḏrā kālaʼn. Birth and death hang over the heads of all beings, along with hunger, sleep and dying. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਰਸਾਲੰ ॥੮॥੧॥੪॥ नानक नामु मिलै मनि भावै साची नदरि रसालं ॥८॥१॥४॥ Nānak nām milai man bẖāvai sācẖī naḏar rasālaʼn. ||8||1||4|| The Naam is pleasing to Nanak's mind; O True Lord, Source of bliss, please bless me with Your Grace. ||8||1||4||
