ਸਾਚੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ साची सुरति नामि नही त्रिपते हउमै करत गवाइआ ॥ Saachee suraṫ naam nahee ṫaripṫæ ha▫umæ karaṫ gavaa▫i▫aa. They pretend to understand the Truth, but they are not satisfied by the Naam; they waste their lives in egotism. ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मलार महला १ ॥ Malaar mėhlaa 1. Malaar, First Mehl: ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਰਤੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ पर धन पर नारी रतु निंदा बिखु खाई दुखु पाइआ ॥ Par ḋʰan par naaree raṫ ninḋaa bikʰ kʰaa▫ee ḋukʰ paa▫i▫aa. Caught in slander and attachment to the wealth and women of others, they eat poison and suffer with pain. ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਭੈ ਕਪਟ ਨ ਛੂਟੇ ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ सबदु चीनि भै कपट न छूटे मनि मुखि माइआ माइआ ॥ Sabaḋ cheen bʰæ kapat na chʰooté man mukʰ maa▫i▫aa maa▫i▫aa. They think about the Shabad, but they are not released from their fear and fraud; the minds and mouths are filled with Maya, Maya. ਅਜਗਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਲਦੇ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ अजगरि भारि लदे अति भारी मरि जनमे जनमु गवाइआ ॥१॥ Ajgar bʰaar laḋé aṫ bʰaaree mar janmé janam gavaa▫i▫aa. ||1|| Loading the heavy and crushing load, they die, only to be reborn, and waste their lives again. ||1|| ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥ मनि भावै सबदु सुहाइआ ॥ Man bʰaavæ sabaḋ suhaa▫i▫aa. The Word of the Shabad is so very beautiful; it is pleasing to my mind. ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਭੇਖ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੑੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ भ्रमि भ्रमि जोनि भेख बहु कीन्हे गुरि राखे सचु पाइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Bʰaram bʰaram jon bʰékʰ baho keenĥé gur raakʰé sach paa▫i▫aa. ||1|| rahaa▫o. The mortal wanders lost in reincarnation, wearing various robes and clothes; when he is saved and protected by the Guru, then he finds the Truth. ||1||Pause|| ਤੀਰਥਿ ਤੇਜੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਨੑਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ तीरथि तेजु निवारि न न्हाते हरि का नामु न भाइआ ॥ Ṫiraṫʰ ṫéj nivaar na nĥaaṫé har kaa naam na bʰaa▫i▫aa. He does not try to wash away his angry passions by bathing at sacred shrines. He does not love the Name of the Lord. ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਿਆ ਜਤ ਕੋ ਤਤ ਹੀ ਆਇਆ ॥ रतन पदारथु परहरि तिआगिआ जत को तत ही आइआ ॥ Raṫan paḋaaraṫʰ par▫har ṫi▫aagi▫aa jaṫ ko ṫaṫ hee aa▫i▫aa. He abandons and discards the priceless jewel, and he goes back from where he came. ਅਧਿਕ ਸੁਆਦ ਰੋਗ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ अधिक सुआद रोग अधिकाई बिनु गुर सहजु न पाइआ ॥२॥ Aḋʰik su▫aaḋ rog aḋʰikaa▫ee bin gur sahj na paa▫i▫aa. ||2|| The more he tastes, the more he is diseased; without the Guru, there is no peace and poise. ||2|| ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੀਟ ਭਏ ਉਤ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਉਤ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ बिसटा कीट भए उत ही ते उत ही माहि समाइआ ॥ Bistaa keet bʰa▫é uṫ hee ṫé uṫ hee maahi samaa▫i▫aa. And so he becomes a maggot in manure, and in that, he is absorbed. ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਰਹਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ सेवा सुरति रहसि गुण गावा गुरमुखि गिआनु बीचारा ॥ Sévaa suraṫ rahas guṇ gaavaa gurmukʰ gi▫aan beechaaraa. Focusing my awareness on selfless service, I joyfully sing His Praises. As Gurmukh, I contemplate spiritual wisdom. ਖੋਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਾਦੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥ खोजी उपजै बादी बिनसै हउ बलि बलि गुर करतारा ॥ Kʰojee upjæ baaḋee binsæ ha▫o bal bal gur karṫaaraa. The seeker comes forth, and the debater dies down; I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to the Guru, the Creator Lord. ਹਮ ਨੀਚ ਹੋੁਤੇ ਹੀਣਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਤੂ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ हम नीच हुोते हीणमति झूठे तू सबदि सवारणहारा ॥ Ham neech hoṫé heeṇmaṫ jʰootʰé ṫoo sabaḋ savaaraṇhaaraa. I am low and wretched, with shallow and false understanding; You embellish and exalt me through the Word of Your Shabad. ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨਿ ਤਹਾ ਤੂ ਤਾਰਣ ਸਚੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ आतम चीनि तहा तू तारण सचु तारे तारणहारा ॥३॥ Aaṫam cheen ṫahaa ṫoo ṫaaraṇ sach ṫaaré ṫaaraṇhaaraa. ||3|| And wherever there is self-realization, You are there; O True Lord Savior, You save us and carry us across. ||3|| ਬੈਸਿ ਸੁਥਾਨਿ ਕਹਾਂ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਕਥਉ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ बैसि सुथानि कहां गुण तेरे किआ किआ कथउ अपारा ॥ Bæs suṫʰaan kahaaⁿ guṇ ṫéré ki▫aa ki▫aa kaṫʰa▫o apaaraa. Where should I sit to chant Your Praises; which of Your Infinite Praises should I chant? ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਥਾਂ ਨਾਥਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ अलखु न लखीऐ अगमु अजोनी तूं नाथां नाथणहारा ॥ Alakʰ na lakʰee▫æ agam ajonee ṫooⁿ naaṫʰaaⁿ naaṫʰaṇhaaraa. The Unknown cannot be known; O Inaccessible, Unborn Lord God, You are the Lord and Master of masters. ਕਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਉ ਤੂ ਕੈਸਾ ਸਭਿ ਜਾਚਕ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥ किसु पहि देखि कहउ तू कैसा सभि जाचक तू दातारा ॥ Kis pėh ḋékʰ kaha▫o ṫoo kæsaa sabʰ jaachak ṫoo ḋaaṫaaraa. How can I compare You to anyone else I see? All are beggars - You are the Great Giver. ਭਗਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਰਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥ भगतिहीणु नानकु दरि देखहु इकु नामु मिलै उरि धारा ॥४॥३॥ Bʰagṫiheeṇ Naanak ḋar ḋékʰhu ik naam milæ ur ḋʰaaraa. ||4||3|| Lacking devotion, Nanak looks to Your Door; please bless him with Your One Name, that he may enshrine it in his heart. ||4||3|| ਜਿਨਿ ਧਨ ਪਿਰ ਕਾ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਸਾ ਬਿਲਖ ਬਦਨ ਕੁਮਲਾਨੀ ॥ जिनि धन पिर का सादु न जानिआ सा बिलख बदन कुमलानी ॥ Jin ḋʰan pir kaa saaḋ na jaani▫aa saa bilakʰ baḋan kumlaanee. The soul-bride who has not known delight with her Husband Lord, shall weep and wail with a wretched face.
