ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ भैरउ महला ५ ॥ Bẖairo mėhlā 5. Bhairao, Fifth Mehl: ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰੈ ॥ निकटि बुझै सो बुरा किउ करै ॥ Nikat bujẖai so burā ki▫o karai. How can anyone do evil, if he realizes that the Lord is near? ਹੈ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਅਰੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ है निकटे अरु भेदु न पाइआ ॥ Hai nikte ar bẖeḏ na pā▫i▫ā. He is near, but this mystery is not understood. ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੈ ਨਿਤ ਡਰਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ॥ बिखु संचै नित डरता फिरै ॥ Bikẖ sancẖai niṯ darṯā firai. One who gathers corruption, constantly feels fear. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਭ ਮੋਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ बिनु सतिगुर सभ मोही माइआ ॥१॥ Bin saṯgur sabẖ mohī mā▫i▫ā. ||1|| Without the True Guru, all are enticed by Maya. ||1|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ गुरमुखि भेदु विरला को लहै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Gurmukẖ bẖeḏ virlā ko lahai. ||1|| rahā▫o. But rare is that person, who, as Gurmukh, understands this mystery. ||1||Pause|| ਨੇੜੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥ नेड़ै नेड़ै सभु को कहै ॥ Neṛai neṛai sabẖ ko kahai. Everyone says that He is near, near at hand. ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ निकटि न देखै पर ग्रिहि जाइ ॥ Nikat na ḏekẖai par garihi jā▫e. The mortal does not see the Lord near at hand; instead, he goes to the homes of others. ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰੈ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਖਾਇ ॥ दरबु हिरै मिथिआ करि खाइ ॥ Ḏarab hirai mithi▫ā kar kẖā▫e. He steals their wealth and lives in falsehood. ਪਈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ पई ठगउरी हरि संगि न जानिआ ॥ Pa▫ī ṯẖag▫urī har sang na jāni▫ā. Under the influence of the drug of illusion, he does not know that the Lord is with him. ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥ बाझु गुरू है भरमि भुलानिआ ॥२॥ Bājẖ gurū hai bẖaram bẖulāni▫ā. ||2|| Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||2|| ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ॥ निकटि न जानै बोलै कूड़ु ॥ Nikat na jānai bolai kūṛ. Not understanding that the Lord is near, he tells lies. ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਮੂੜੁ ॥ माइआ मोहि मूठा है मूड़ु ॥ Mā▫i▫ā mohi mūṯẖā hai mūṛ. In love and attachment to Maya, the fool is plundered. ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲਿਲਾਟ ॥ जिसु मसतकि करमु लिखिआ लिलाट ॥ Jis masṯak karam likẖi▫ā lilāt. One whose good karma is recorded on his forehead ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੩॥ बाझु गुरू है भरमि भुलाइ ॥३॥ Bājẖ gurū hai bẖaram bẖulā▫e. ||3|| Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||3|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ अंतरि वसतु दिसंतरि जाइ ॥ Anṯar vasaṯ disanṯar jā▫e. That which he seeks is within his own self, but he looks for it outside. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਕਪਾਟ ॥ सतिगुरु सेवे खुल्हे कपाट ॥ Saṯgur seve kẖulĥe kapāt. serves the True Guru; thus the hard and heavy shutters of his mind are opened wide. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਸੋਇ ॥ अंतरि बाहरि निकटे सोइ ॥ Anṯar bāhar nikte so▫e. Within his own being and beyond, he sees the Lord near at hand. ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੬॥ जन नानक आवै न जावै कोइ ॥४॥३॥१६॥ Jan Nānak āvai na jāvai ko▫e. ||4||3||16|| O servant Nanak, he does not come and go in reincarnation. ||4||3||16||
