ਨੈਨੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਨਹੀ ਤਨੁ ਹੀਨਾ ਜਰਿ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੋ ॥ नैनी द्रिसटि नही तनु हीना जरि जीतिआ सिरि कालो ॥ Nainī ḏarisat nahī ṯan hīnā jar jīṯi▫ā sir kālo. The eyes lose their sight, and the body withers away; old age overtakes the mortal, and death hangs over his head. ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ भैरउ महला १ ॥ Bẖairo mėhlā 1. Bhairao, First Mehl: ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਓ ॥ प्राणी हरि जपि जनमु गइओ ॥ Parāṇī har jap janam ga▫i▫o. O mortal, meditate on the Lord - your life is passing away! ਰੂਪੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਰਹਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਕਿਉ ਛੋਡੈ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੋ ॥੧॥ रूपु रंगु रहसु नही साचा किउ छोडै जम जालो ॥१॥ Rūp rang rahas nahī sācẖā ki▫o cẖẖodai jam jālo. ||1|| Beauty, loving attachment and the pleasures of life are not permanent. How can anyone escape from the noose of death? ||1|| ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ साच सबद बिनु कबहु न छूटसि बिरथा जनमु भइओ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Sācẖ sabaḏ bin kabahu na cẖẖūtas birthā janam bẖa▫i▫o. ||1|| rahā▫o. Without the True Word of the Shabad, you shall never be released, and your life shall be totally useless. ||1||Pause|| ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਹਉ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਠਿਨ ਪੀਰ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ तन महि कामु क्रोधु हउ ममता कठिन पीर अति भारी ॥ Ŧan mėh kām kroḏẖ ha▫o mamṯā kaṯẖin pīr aṯ bẖārī. Within the body are sexual desire, anger, egotism and attachment. This pain is so great, and so difficult to endure. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਰੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ गुरमुखि राम जपहु रसु रसना इन बिधि तरु तू तारी ॥२॥ Gurmukẖ rām japahu ras rasnā in biḏẖ ṯar ṯū ṯārī. ||2|| As Gurmukh, chant the Lord's Name, and savor it with your tongue; in this way, you shall cross over to the other side. ||2|| ਬਹਰੇ ਕਰਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਭਈ ਹੋਛੀ ਸਬਦ ਸਹਜੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਿਆ ॥ बहरे करन अकलि भई होछी सबद सहजु नही बूझिआ ॥ Bahre karan akal bẖa▫ī hocẖẖī sabaḏ sahj nahī būjẖi▫ā. Your ears are deaf, and your intellect is worthless, and still, you do not intuitively understand the Word of the Shabad. ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਿਆ ॥੩॥ जनमु पदारथु मनमुखि हारिआ बिनु गुर अंधु न सूझिआ ॥३॥ Janam paḏārath manmukẖ hāri▫ā bin gur anḏẖ na sūjẖi▫ā. ||3|| The self-willed manmukh wastes this priceless human life and loses it. Without the Guru, the blind person cannot see. ||3|| ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥ रहै उदासु आस निरासा सहज धिआनि बैरागी ॥ Rahai uḏās ās nirāsā sahj ḏẖi▫ān bairāgī. Whoever remains detached and free of desire in the midst of desire - and whoever, unattached, intuitively meditates on the Celestial Lord- ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੨॥੩॥ प्रणवति नानक गुरमुखि छूटसि राम नामि लिव लागी ॥४॥२॥३॥ Paraṇvaṯ Nānak gurmukẖ cẖẖūtas rām nām liv lāgī. ||4||2||3|| prays Nanak, as Gurmukh, he is released. He is lovingly attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||||2||3||
