ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਸਮਝੁ ਅਚੇਤ ਇਆਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ तू समझु अचेत इआणिआ राम ॥ É man méri▫aa ṫoo samajʰ achéṫ i▫aaṇi▫aa raam. O my ignorant, unconscious mind, reform yourself. ਤੁਖਾਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ तुखारी महला १ ॥ Ṫukʰaaree mėhlaa 1. Tukhaari, First Mehl: ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਛਡਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ छडि अवगण गुणी समाणिआ राम ॥ É man méri▫aa chʰad avgaṇ guṇee samaaṇi▫aa raam. O my mind! Leave behind your faults and demerits, and be absorbed in virtue. ਬਹੁ ਸਾਦ ਲੁਭਾਣੇ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਮੇਲਾ ॥ बहु साद लुभाणे किरत कमाणे विछुड़िआ नही मेला ॥ Baho saaḋ lubʰaaṇé kiraṫ kamaaṇé vichʰuṛi▫aa nahee mélaa. You are deluded by so many flavors and pleasures, and you act in such confusion. You are separated, and you will not meet your Lord. ਕਿਉ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਜਮ ਡਰਿ ਮਰੀਐ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥ किउ दुतरु तरीऐ जम डरि मरीऐ जम का पंथु दुहेला ॥ Ki▫o ḋuṫar ṫaree▫æ jam dar maree▫æ jam kaa panṫʰ ḋuhélaa. How can the impassable world-ocean be crossed? The fear of the Messenger of Death is deadly. The path of Death is agonizingly painful. ਮਨਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤਾ ਸਾਝ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤਾ ਅਵਘਟਿ ਰੁਧਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ॥ मनि रामु नही जाता साझ प्रभाता अवघटि रुधा किआ करे ॥ Man raam nahee jaaṫaa saajʰ parbʰaṫaa avgʰat ruḋʰaa ki▫aa karé. The mortal does not know the Lord in the evening, or in the morning; trapped on the treacherous path, what will he do then? ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵੈ ਨਰਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ बंधनि बाधिआ इन बिधि छूटै गुरमुखि सेवै नरहरे ॥१॥ Banḋʰan baaḋʰi▫aa in biḋʰ chʰootæ gurmukʰ sévæ nar▫haré. ||1|| Bound in bondage, he is released only by this method: as Gurmukh, serve the Lord. ||1|| ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਛੋਡਿ ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ तू छोडि आल जंजाला राम ॥ É man méri▫aa ṫoo chʰod aal janjaalaa raam. O my mind! Abandon your household entanglements. ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ हरि सेवहु पुरखु निराला राम ॥ É man méri▫aa har sévhu purakʰ niraalaa raam. O my mind! Serve the Lord, the Primal, Detached Lord. ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ हरि सिमरि एकंकारु साचा सभु जगतु जिंनि उपाइआ ॥ Har simar ékankaar saachaa sabʰ jagaṫ jinn upaa▫i▫aa. Meditate in remembrance of the One Universal Creator; the True Lord created the entire Universe. ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਜਗਤਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ पउणु पाणी अगनि बाधे गुरि खेलु जगति दिखाइआ ॥ Pa▫uṇ paaṇee agan baaḋʰé gur kʰél jagaṫ ḋikʰaa▫i▫aa. The Guru controls the air, water and fire; He has staged the drama of the world. ਆਚਾਰਿ ਤੂ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਜਮ ਜਪ ਤਪੋ ॥ आचारि तू वीचारि आपे हरि नामु संजम जप तपो ॥ Aachaar ṫoo veechaar aapé har naam sanjam jap ṫapo. Reflect on your own self, and so practice good conduct; chant the Name of the Lord as your self-discipline and meditation. ਸਖਾ ਸੈਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਜਪੁ ਜਪੋ ॥੨॥ सखा सैनु पिआरु प्रीतमु नामु हरि का जपु जपो ॥२॥ Sakʰaa sæn pi▫aar pareeṫam naam har kaa jap japo. ||2|| The Name of the Lord is your Companion, Friend and Dear Beloved; chant it, and meditate on it. ||2|| ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੁ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵਹੀ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ तू थिरु रहु चोट न खावही राम ॥ É man méri▫aa ṫoo ṫʰir rahu chot na kʰaavhee raam. O my mind! Remain steady and stable, and you will not have to endure beatings. ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਹੀ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ गुण गावहि सहजि समावही राम ॥ É man méri▫aa guṇ gaavahi sahj samaavahee raam. O my mind! Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, you shall merge into Him with intuitive ease. ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇ ਰਸੀਅਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਾਰਹੇ ॥ गुण गाइ राम रसाइ रसीअहि गुर गिआन अंजनु सारहे ॥ Guṇ gaa▫é raam rasaa▫é rasee▫ah gur gi▫aan anjan saar▫hé. Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, be happy. Apply the ointment of spiritual wisdom to your eyes. ਤ੍ਰੈ ਲੋਕ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਹੇ ॥ त्रै लोक दीपकु सबदि चानणु पंच दूत संघारहे ॥ Ṫaræ lok ḋeepak sabaḋ chaanaṇ panch ḋooṫ sangʰaarahé. The Word of the Shabad is the lamp which illuminates the three worlds; it slaughters the five demons. ਭੈ ਕਾਟਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਤਰਹਿ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਾਰਏ ॥ भै काटि निरभउ तरहि दुतरु गुरि मिलिऐ कारज सारए ॥ Bʰæ kaat nirbʰa▫o ṫarėh ḋuṫar gur mili▫æ kaaraj saar▫é. Quieting your fears, become fearless, and you shall cross over the impassible world ocean. Meeting the Guru, your affairs shall be resolved. ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ तू किआ लै आइआ किआ लै जाइसी राम ॥ É man méri▫aa ṫoo ki▫aa læ aa▫i▫aa ki▫aa læ jaa▫isee raam. O my mind! Why did you come into the world? What will you take with you when you go? ਰੂਪੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਏ ॥੩॥ रूपु रंगु पिआरु हरि सिउ हरि आपि किरपा धारए ॥३॥ Roop rang pi▫aar har si▫o har aap kirpaa ḋʰaar▫é. ||3|| You shall find the joy and the beauty of the Lord’s Love and Affection; the Lord Himself shall shower you with His Grace. ||3|| ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤਾ ਛੁਟਸੀ ਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਸੀ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ ता छुटसी जा भरमु चुकाइसी राम ॥ É man méri▫aa ṫaa chʰutsee jaa bʰaram chukaa▫isee raam. O my mind! You shall be emancipated, when you eliminate your doubts. ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਖਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਾਉ ਪਛਾਣਹੇ ॥ धनु संचि हरि हरि नाम वखरु गुर सबदि भाउ पछाणहे ॥ Ḋʰan sanch har har naam vakʰar gur sabaḋ bʰaa▫o pachʰaaṇahé. So, gather the wealth and capital of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, you shall realize its value. ਮੈਲੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣਹੇ ॥ मैलु परहरि सबदि निरमलु महलु घरु सचु जाणहे ॥ Mæl par▫har sabaḋ nirmal mahal gʰar sach jaaṇhé. Filth shall be taken away, through the Immaculate Word of the Shabad; you shall know the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence, your true home. ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਿਧਾਵਹਿ ਝੋਲਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀ ਰਸੋ ॥ पति नामु पावहि घरि सिधावहि झोलि अमृत पी रसो ॥ Paṫ naam paavahi gʰar siḋʰaavėh jʰol amriṫ pee raso. Through the Naam, you shall obtain honor, and come home. Eagerly drink the Ambrosial Amrit. ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੋ ॥੪॥ हरि नामु धिआईऐ सबदि रसु पाईऐ वडभागि जपीऐ हरि जसो ॥४॥ Har naam ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ sabaḋ ras paa▫ee▫æ vadbʰaag japee▫æ har jaso. ||4|| Meditate on the Lord’s Name, and you shall obtain the sublime essence of the Shabad; by great good fortune, chant the Praises of the Lord. ||4|| ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਉੜੀਆ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਕਿਉ ਚੜੈ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ बिनु पउड़ीआ मंदरि किउ चड़ै राम ॥ É man méri▫aa bin pa▫uṛee▫aa manḋar ki▫o chaṛæ raam. O my mind! Without a ladder, how will you climb up to the Temple of the Lord? ਪਾਰਿ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਏ ॥ पारि साजनु अपारु प्रीतमु गुर सबद सुरति लंघावए ॥ Paar saajan apaar pareeṫam gur sabaḋ suraṫ langʰaava▫é. On that far shore is Your Beloved, Infinite Friend. Only your awareness of the Guru’s Shabad will carry you across. ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਅੰਬੜੈ ਰਾਮ ॥ ए मन मेरिआ बिनु बेड़ी पारि न अ्मबड़ै राम ॥ É man méri▫aa bin béṛee paar na ambṛæ raam. O my mind! Without a boat, you shall not reach the other shore. ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਲੀਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਏ ॥ मिलि साधसंगति करहि रलीआ फिरि न पछोतावए ॥ Mil saaḋʰsangaṫ karahi ralee▫aa fir na pachʰoṫaava▫é. Join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and you shall enjoy ecstasy; you shall not regret or repent later on. ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਾਚਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਓ ॥ करि दइआ दानु दइआल साचा हरि नाम संगति पावओ ॥ Kar ḋa▫i▫aa ḋaan ḋa▫i▫aal saachaa har naam sangaṫ paava▫o. Be Merciful, O Merciful True Lord God: please give me the Blessing of the Lord’s Name, and the Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਪਇਅੰਪੈ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਵਓ ॥੫॥੬॥ नानकु पइअ्मपै सुणहु प्रीतम गुर सबदि मनु समझावओ ॥५॥६॥ Naanak pa▫i▫ampæ suṇhu pareeṫam gur sabaḋ man sanjʰaava▫o. ||5||6|| Nanak prays: please hear me, O my Beloved; instruct my mind through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ||5||6||
