ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ मारू महला ३ ॥ Mārū mėhlā 3. Maaroo, Third Mehl: ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀ ॥ आपे स्रिसटि हुकमि सभ साजी ॥ Āpe sarisat hukam sabẖ sājī. He Himself fashioned the Universe, through the Hukam of His Command. ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੀ ॥ आपे थापि उथापि निवाजी ॥ Āpe thāp uthāp nivājī. He Himself establishes and disestablishes, and embellishes with grace. ਆਪੇ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ आपे निआउ करे सभु साचा साचे साचि मिलाइदा ॥१॥ Āpe ni▫ā▫o kare sabẖ sācẖā sācẖe sācẖ milā▫iḏā. ||1|| The True Lord Himself administers all justice; through Truth, we merge in the True Lord. ||1|| ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਹੈ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥ काइआ कोटु है आकारा ॥ Kā▫i▫ā kot hai ākārā. The body takes the form of a fortress. ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥ माइआ मोहु पसरिआ पासारा ॥ Mā▫i▫ā moh pasri▫ā pāsārā. Emotional attachment to Maya has expanded throughout its expanse. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭਸਮੈ ਕੀ ਢੇਰੀ ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ बिनु सबदै भसमै की ढेरी खेहू खेह रलाइदा ॥२॥ Bin sabḏai bẖasmai kī dẖerī kẖehū kẖeh ralā▫iḏā. ||2|| Without the Word of the Shabad, the body is reduced to a pile of ashes; in the end, dust mingles with dust. ||2|| ਕਾਇਆ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋਟੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ काइआ कंचन कोटु अपारा ॥ Kā▫i▫ā kancẖan kot apārā. The body is the infinite fortress of gold; ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ जिसु विचि रविआ सबदु अपारा ॥ Jis vicẖ ravi▫ā sabaḏ apārā. it is permeated by the Infinite Word of the Shabad. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ गुरमुखि गावै सदा गुण साचे मिलि प्रीतम सुखु पाइदा ॥३॥ Gurmukẖ gāvai saḏā guṇ sācẖe mil parīṯam sukẖ pā▫iḏā. ||3|| The Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the True Lord forever; meeting his Beloved, he finds peace. ||3|| ਕਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ काइआ हरि मंदरु हरि आपि सवारे ॥ Kā▫i▫ā har manḏar har āp savāre. The body is the temple of the Lord; the Lord Himself embellishes it. ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵਸੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥ तिसु विचि हरि जीउ वसै मुरारे ॥ Ŧis vicẖ har jī▫o vasai murāre. The Dear Lord dwells within it. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਣਜਨਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ गुर कै सबदि वणजनि वापारी नदरी आपि मिलाइदा ॥४॥ Gur kai sabaḏ vaṇjan vāpārī naḏrī āp milā▫iḏā. ||4|| Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the merchants trade, and in His Grace, the Lord merges them with Himself. ||4|| ਸੋ ਸੂਚਾ ਜਿ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ सो सूचा जि करोधु निवारे ॥ So sūcẖā jė karoḏẖ nivāre. He alone is pure, who eradicates anger. ਸਬਦੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ सबदे बूझै आपु सवारे ॥ Sabḏe būjẖai āp savāre. He realizes the Shabad, and reforms himself. ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ आपे करे कराए करता आपे मंनि वसाइदा ॥५॥ Āpe kare karā▫e karṯā āpe man vasā▫iḏā. ||5|| The Creator Himself acts, and inspires all to act; He Himself abides in the mind. ||5|| ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥ निरमल भगति है निराली ॥ Nirmal bẖagaṯ hai nirālī. Pure and unique is devotional worship. ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧੋਵਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ मनु तनु धोवहि सबदि वीचारी ॥ Man ṯan ḏẖovėh sabaḏ vīcẖārī. The mind and body are washed clean, contemplating the Shabad. ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ अनदिनु सदा रहै रंगि राता करि किरपा भगति कराइदा ॥६॥ An▫ḏin saḏā rahai rang rāṯā kar kirpā bẖagaṯ karā▫iḏā. ||6|| One who remains forever imbued with His Love, night and day - in His Mercy, the Lord inspires him to perform devotional worship service. ||6|| ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ इसु मन मंदर महि मनूआ धावै ॥ Is man manḏar mėh manū▫ā ḏẖāvai. In this temple of the mind, the mind wanders around. ਸੁਖੁ ਪਲਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ सुखु पलरि तिआगि महा दुखु पावै ॥ Sukẖ palar ṯi▫āg mahā ḏukẖ pāvai. Discarding joy like straw, it suffers in terrible pain. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲੁ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ बिनु सतिगुर भेटे ठउर न पावै आपे खेलु कराइदा ॥७॥ Bin saṯgur bẖete ṯẖa▫ur na pāvai āpe kẖel karā▫iḏā. ||7|| Without meeting the True Guru, it finds no place of rest; He Himself has staged this play. ||7|| ਆਪਿ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ आपि अपर्मपरु आपि वीचारी ॥ Āp aprampar āp vīcẖārī. He Himself is infinite; He contemplates Himself. ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥ आपे मेले करणी सारी ॥ Āpe mele karṇī sārī. He Himself bestows Union through actions of excellence. ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ किआ को कार करे वेचारा आपे बखसि मिलाइदा ॥८॥ Ki▫ā ko kār kare vecẖārā āpe bakẖas milā▫iḏā. ||8|| What can the poor creatures do? Granting forgiveness, He unites them with Himself. ||8|| ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ आपे सतिगुरु मेले पूरा ॥ Āpe saṯgur mele pūrā. The Perfect Lord Himself unites them with the True Guru. ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਸੂਰਾ ॥ सचै सबदि महाबल सूरा ॥ Sacẖai sabaḏ mahābal sūrā. Through the True Word of the Shabad, he makes them brave spiritual heroes. ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ आपे मेले दे वडिआई सचे सिउ चितु लाइदा ॥९॥ Āpe mele ḏe vadi▫ā▫ī sacẖe si▫o cẖiṯ lā▫iḏā. ||9|| Uniting them with Himself, He bestows glorious greatness; He inspires them to focus their consciousness on the True Lord. ||9|| ਘਰ ਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ घर ही अंदरि साचा सोई ॥ Gẖar hī anḏar sācẖā so▫ī. The True Lord is deep within the heart. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ गुरमुखि विरला बूझै कोई ॥ Gurmukẖ virlā būjẖai ko▫ī. How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, realize this. ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ नामु निधानु वसिआ घट अंतरि रसना नामु धिआइदा ॥१०॥ Nām niḏẖān vasi▫ā gẖat anṯar rasnā nām ḏẖi▫ā▫iḏā. ||10|| The treasure of the Naam abides deep within their hearts; they meditate on the Naam with their tongues. ||10|| ਦਿਸੰਤਰੁ ਭਵੈ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਲੇ ॥ दिसंतरु भवै अंतरु नही भाले ॥ Disanṯar bẖavai anṯar nahī bẖāle. He wanders through foreign lands, but does not look within himself. ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲੇ ॥ माइआ मोहि बधा जमकाले ॥ Mā▫i▫ā mohi baḏẖā jamkāle. Attached to Maya, he is bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death. ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਤੂਟੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਰਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ जम की फासी कबहू न तूटै दूजै भाइ भरमाइदा ॥११॥ Jam kī fāsī kabhū na ṯūtai ḏūjai bẖā▫e bẖarmā▫iḏā. ||11|| The noose of death around his neck will never be untied; in the love of duality, he wanders in reincarnation. ||11|| ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ जपु तपु संजमु होरु कोई नाही ॥ Jap ṯap sanjam hor ko▫ī nāhī. There is no real chanting, meditation, penance or self-control, ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਕਮਾਹੀ ॥ जब लगु गुर का सबदु न कमाही ॥ Jab lag gur kā sabaḏ na kamāhī. as long as one does not live to the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ गुर कै सबदि मिलिआ सचु पाइआ सचे सचि समाइदा ॥१२॥ Gur kai sabaḏ mili▫ā sacẖ pā▫i▫ā sacẖe sacẖ samā▫iḏā. ||12|| Accepting the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one obtains Truth; through Truth, one merges in the True Lord. ||12|| ਕਾਮ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਸਬਲ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ काम करोधु सबल संसारा ॥ Kām karoḏẖ sabal sansārā. Sexual desire and anger are very powerful in the world. ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖ ਕਾ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥ बहु करम कमावहि सभु दुख का पसारा ॥ Baho karam kamāvėh sabẖ ḏukẖ kā pasārā. They lead to all sorts of actions, but these only add to all the pain. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ सतिगुर सेवहि से सुखु पावहि सचै सबदि मिलाइदा ॥१३॥ Saṯgur sevėh se sukẖ pāvahi sacẖai sabaḏ milā▫iḏā. ||13|| Those who serve the True Guru find peace; they are united with the True Shabad. ||13|| ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ॥ पउणु पाणी है बैसंतरु ॥ Pa▫uṇ pāṇī hai baisanṯar. Air, water and fire make up the body. ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ॥ माइआ मोहु वरतै सभ अंतरि ॥ Mā▫i▫ā moh varṯai sabẖ anṯar. Emotional attachment to Maya rules deep within all. ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ जिनि कीते जा तिसै पछाणहि माइआ मोहु चुकाइदा ॥१४॥ Jin kīṯe jā ṯisai pacẖẖāṇėh mā▫i▫ā moh cẖukā▫iḏā. ||14|| When one realizes the One who created him, emotional attachment to Maya is dispelled. ||14|| ਇਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥ इकि माइआ मोहि गरबि विआपे ॥ Ik mā▫i▫ā mohi garab vi▫āpe. Some are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya and pride. ਹਉਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ॥ हउमै होइ रहे है आपे ॥ Ha▫umai ho▫e rahe hai āpe. They are self-conceited and egotistical. ਜਮਕਾਲੈ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ जमकालै की खबरि न पाई अंति गइआ पछुताइदा ॥१५॥ Jamkālai kī kẖabar na pā▫ī anṯ ga▫i▫ā pacẖẖuṯā▫iḏā. ||15|| They never think about the Messenger of Death; in the end, they leave, regretting and repenting. ||15|| ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਸੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ जिनि उपाए सो बिधि जाणै ॥ Jin upā▫e so biḏẖ jāṇai. He alone knows the Way, who created it. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ गुरमुखि देवै सबदु पछाणै ॥ Gurmukẖ ḏevai sabaḏ pacẖẖāṇai. The Gurmukh, who is blessed with the Shabad, realizes Him. ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੨॥੧੬॥ नानक दासु कहै बेनंती सचि नामि चितु लाइदा ॥१६॥२॥१६॥ Nānak ḏās kahai benanṯī sacẖ nām cẖiṯ lā▫iḏā. ||16||2||16|| Slave Nanak offers this prayer; O Lord, let my consciousness be attached to the True Name. ||16||2||16||
