ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ मारू महला ३ ॥ Mārū mėhlā 3. Maaroo, Third Mehl: ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ निहचलु एकु सदा सचु सोई ॥ Nihcẖal ek saḏā sacẖ so▫ī. The One Lord is eternal and unchanging, forever True. ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ पूरे गुर ते सोझी होई ॥ Pūre gur ṯe sojẖī ho▫ī. Through the Perfect Guru, this understanding is obtained. ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਭੀਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ हरि रसि भीने सदा धिआइनि गुरमति सीलु संनाहा हे ॥१॥ Har ras bẖīne saḏā ḏẖi▫ā▫in gurmaṯ sīl sannāhā he. ||1|| Those who are drenched with the sublime essence of the Lord, meditate forever on Him; following the Guru's Teachings, they obtain the armor of humility. ||1|| ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥ अंदरि रंगु सदा सचिआरा ॥ Anḏar rang saḏā sacẖi▫ārā. Deep within, they love the True Lord forever. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ गुर कै सबदि हरि नामि पिआरा ॥ Gur kai sabaḏ har nām pi▫ārā. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they love the Lord's Name. ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ नउ निधि नामु वसिआ घट अंतरि छोडिआ माइआ का लाहा हे ॥२॥ Na▫o niḏẖ nām vasi▫ā gẖat anṯar cẖẖodi▫ā mā▫i▫ā kā lāhā he. ||2|| The Naam, the embodiment of the nine treasures, abides within their hearts; they renounce the profit of Maya. ||2|| ਰਈਅਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਈ ॥ रईअति राजे दुरमति दोई ॥ Ra▫ī▫aṯ rāje ḏurmaṯ ḏo▫ī. Both the king and his subjects are involved in evil-mindedness and duality. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ बिनु सतिगुर सेवे एकु न होई ॥ Bin saṯgur seve ek na ho▫ī. Without serving the True Guru, they do not become one with the Lord. ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਤਿਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ एकु धिआइनि सदा सुखु पाइनि निहचलु राजु तिनाहा हे ॥३॥ Ėk ḏẖi▫ā▫in saḏā sukẖ pā▫in nihcẖal rāj ṯināhā he. ||3|| Those who meditate on the One Lord find eternal peace. Their power is eternal and unfailing. ||3|| ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਰਖੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ आवणु जाणा रखै न कोई ॥ Āvaṇ jāṇā rakẖai na ko▫ī. No one can save them from coming and going. ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥ जमणु मरणु तिसै ते होई ॥ Jamaṇ maraṇ ṯisai ṯe ho▫ī. Birth and death come from Him. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ गुरमुखि साचा सदा धिआवहु गति मुकति तिसै ते पाहा हे ॥४॥ Gurmukẖ sācẖā saḏā ḏẖi▫āvahu gaṯ mukaṯ ṯisai ṯe pāhā he. ||4|| The Gurmukh meditates forever on the True Lord. Emancipation and liberation are obtained from Him. ||4|| ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ॥ सचु संजमु सतिगुरू दुआरै ॥ Sacẖ sanjam saṯgurū ḏu▫ārai. Truth and self-control are found through the Door of the True Guru. ਹਉਮੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥ हउमै क्रोधु सबदि निवारै ॥ Ha▫umai kroḏẖ sabaḏ nivārai. Egotism and anger are silenced through the Shabad. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ सतिगुरु सेवि सदा सुखु पाईऐ सीलु संतोखु सभु ताहा हे ॥५॥ Saṯgur sev saḏā sukẖ pā▫ī▫ai sīl sanṯokẖ sabẖ ṯāhā he. ||5|| Serving the True Guru, lasting peace is found; humility and contentment all come from Him. ||5|| ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ हउमै मोहु उपजै संसारा ॥ Ha▫umai moh upjai sansārā. Out of egotism and attachment, the Universe welled up. ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ॥ सभु जगु बिनसै नामु विसारा ॥ Sabẖ jag binsai nām visārā. Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all the world perishes. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਜਗਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ बिनु सतिगुर सेवे नामु न पाईऐ नामु सचा जगि लाहा हे ॥६॥ Bin saṯgur seve nām na pā▫ī▫ai nām sacẖā jag lāhā he. ||6|| Without serving the True Guru, the Naam is not obtained. The Naam is the True profit in this world. ||6|| ਸਚਾ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥ सचा अमरु सबदि सुहाइआ ॥ Sacẖā amar sabaḏ suhā▫i▫ā. True is His Will, beauteous and pleasing through the Word of the Shabad. ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਮਿਲਿ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਇਆ ॥ पंच सबद मिलि वाजा वाइआ ॥ Pancẖ sabaḏ mil vājā vā▫i▫ā. The Panch Shabad, the five primal sounds, vibrate and resonate. ਸਦਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ सदा कारजु सचि नामि सुहेला बिनु सबदै कारजु केहा हे ॥७॥ Saḏā kāraj sacẖ nām suhelā bin sabḏai kāraj kehā he. ||7|| Through the True Name, one's actions are forever embellished. Without the Shabad, what can anyone do? ||7|| ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹਸੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਵੈ ॥ खिन महि हसै खिन महि रोवै ॥ Kẖin mėh hasai kẖin mėh rovai. One instant, he laughs, and the next instant, he cries. ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ दूजी दुरमति कारजु न होवै ॥ Ḏūjī ḏurmaṯ kāraj na hovai. Because of duality and evil-mindedness, his affairs are not resolved. ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ संजोगु विजोगु करतै लिखि पाए किरतु न चलै चलाहा हे ॥८॥ Sanjog vijog karṯai likẖ pā▫e kiraṯ na cẖalai cẖalāhā he. ||8|| Union and separation are pre-ordained by the Creator. Actions already committed cannot be taken back. ||8|| ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ जीवन मुकति गुर सबदु कमाए ॥ Jīvan mukaṯ gur sabaḏ kamā▫e. One who lives the Word of the Guru's Shabad becomes Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive. ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ हरि सिउ सद ही रहै समाए ॥ Har si▫o saḏ hī rahai samā▫e. He remains forever immersed in the Lord. ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ गुर किरपा ते मिलै वडिआई हउमै रोगु न ताहा हे ॥९॥ Gur kirpā ṯe milai vadi▫ā▫ī ha▫umai rog na ṯāhā he. ||9|| By Guru's Grace, one is blessed with glorious greatness; he is not afflicted by the disease of egotism. ||9|| ਰਸ ਕਸ ਖਾਏ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਵਧਾਏ ॥ रस कस खाए पिंडु वधाए ॥ Ras kas kẖā▫e pind vaḏẖā▫e. Eating tasty delicacies, he fattens up his body ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ भेख करै गुर सबदु न कमाए ॥ Bẖekẖ karai gur sabaḏ na kamā▫e. and wears religious robes, but he does not live to the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ अंतरि रोगु महा दुखु भारी बिसटा माहि समाहा हे ॥१०॥ Anṯar rog mahā ḏukẖ bẖārī bistā māhi samāhā he. ||10|| Deep with the nucleus of his being is the great disease; he suffers terrible pain, and eventually sinks into the manure. ||10|| ਬੇਦ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੜਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥ बेद पड़हि पड़ि बादु वखाणहि ॥ Beḏ paṛėh paṛ bāḏ vakāṇėh. He reads and studies the Vedas, and argues about them; ਘਟ ਮਹਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥ घट महि ब्रहमु तिसु सबदि न पछाणहि ॥ Gẖat mėh barahm ṯis sabaḏ na pacẖẖāṇėh. God is within his own heart, but he does not recognize the Word of the Shabad. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਤਤੁ ਬਿਲੋਵੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ गुरमुखि होवै सु ततु बिलोवै रसना हरि रसु ताहा हे ॥११॥ Gurmukẖ hovai so ṯaṯ bilovai rasnā har ras ṯāhā he. ||11|| One who becomes Gurmukh churns the essence of reality; his tongue savors the sublime essence of the Lord. ||11|| ਘਰਿ ਵਥੁ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ घरि वथु छोडहि बाहरि धावहि ॥ Gẖar vath cẖẖodėh bāhar ḏẖāvėh. Those who forsake the object within their own hearts, wander outside. ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ मनमुख अंधे सादु न पावहि ॥ Manmukẖ anḏẖe sāḏ na pāvahi. The blind, self-willed manmukhs do not taste the flavor of God. ਅਨ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਫੀਕੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ अन रस राती रसना फीकी बोले हरि रसु मूलि न ताहा हे ॥१२॥ An ras rāṯī rasnā fīkī bole har ras mūl na ṯāhā he. ||12|| Imbued with the taste of another, their tongues speak tasteless, insipid words. They never taste the sublime essence of the Lord. ||12|| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇਹੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਤਾਰੋ ॥ मनमुख देही भरमु भतारो ॥ Manmukẖ ḏehī bẖaram bẖaṯāro. The self-willed manmukh has doubt as his spouse. ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੋ ॥ दुरमति मरै नित होइ खुआरो ॥ Ḏurmaṯ marai niṯ ho▫e kẖu▫āro. He dies of evil-mindedness, and suffers forever. ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮਨੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਇਆ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ कामि क्रोधि मनु दूजै लाइआ सुपनै सुखु न ताहा हे ॥१३॥ Kām kroḏẖ man ḏūjai lā▫i▫ā supnai sukẖ na ṯāhā he. ||13|| His mind is attached to sexual desire, anger and duality, and he does not find peace, even in dreams. ||13|| ਕੰਚਨ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਤਾਰੋ ॥ कंचन देही सबदु भतारो ॥ Kancẖan ḏehī sabaḏ bẖaṯāro. The body becomes golden, with the Word of the Shabad as its spouse. ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥ अनदिनु भोग भोगे हरि सिउ पिआरो ॥ An▫ḏin bẖog bẖoge har si▫o pi▫āro. Night and day, enjoy the enjoyments, and be in love with the Lord. ਮਹਲਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੈਰ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਭਾਣਾ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ महला अंदरि गैर महलु पाए भाणा बुझि समाहा हे ॥१४॥ Mėhlā anḏar gair mahal pā▫e bẖāṇā bujẖ samāhā he. ||14|| Deep within the mansion of the self, one finds the Lord, who transcends this mansion. Realizing His Will, we merge in Him. ||14|| ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ आपे देवै देवणहारा ॥ Āpe ḏevai ḏevaṇhārā. The Great Giver Himself gives. ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਚਾਰਾ ॥ तिसु आगै नही किसै का चारा ॥ Ŧis āgai nahī kisai kā cẖārā. No one has any power to stand against Him. ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਥਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ आपे बखसे सबदि मिलाए तिस दा सबदु अथाहा हे ॥१५॥ Āpe bakẖse sabaḏ milā▫e ṯis ḏā sabaḏ athāhā he. ||15|| He Himself forgives, and unites us with the Shabad; The Word of His Shabad is unfathomable. ||15|| ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੇਰਾ ॥ जीउ पिंडु सभु है तिसु केरा ॥ Jī▫o pind sabẖ hai ṯis kerā. Body and soul, all belong to Him. ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ सचा साहिबु ठाकुरु मेरा ॥ Sacẖā sāhib ṯẖākur merā. The True Lord is my only Lord and Master. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥੧੪॥ नानक गुरबाणी हरि पाइआ हरि जपु जापि समाहा हे ॥१६॥५॥१४॥ Nānak gurbāṇī har pā▫i▫ā har jap jāp samāhā he. ||16||5||14|| O Nanak, through the Word of the Guru's Bani, I have found the Lord. Chanting the Lord's Chant, I merge in Him. ||16||5||14||
