ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ मारू महला ३ ॥ Mārū mėhlā 3. Maaroo, Third Mehl: ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥ सतिगुरु सेवनि से वडभागी ॥ Saṯgur sevan se vadbẖāgī. Those who serve the True Guru are very fortunate. ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ अनदिनु साचि नामि लिव लागी ॥ An▫ḏin sācẖ nām liv lāgī. Night and day, they remain lovingly attuned to the True Name. ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਰਵਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ सदा सुखदाता रविआ घट अंतरि सबदि सचै ओमाहा हे ॥१॥ Saḏā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa ravi▫ā gẖat anṯar sabaḏ sacẖai omāhā he. ||1|| The Lord, the Giver of peace, abides forever deep within their hearts; they delight in the True Word of the Shabad. ||1|| ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ नदरि करे ता गुरू मिलाए ॥ Naḏar kare ṯā gurū milā▫e. When the Lord grants His Grace, one meets with the Guru. ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ हरि का नामु मंनि वसाए ॥ Har kā nām man vasā▫e. The Name of the Lord is enshrined within the mind. ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੇ ਮਨਿ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ हरि मनि वसिआ सदा सुखदाता सबदे मनि ओमाहा हे ॥२॥ Har man vasi▫ā saḏā sukẖ▫ḏāṯa sabḏe man omāhā he. ||2|| The Lord, the Giver of peace, abides forever within the mind; the mind is delighted with the Word of the Shabad. ||2|| ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ क्रिपा करे ता मेलि मिलाए ॥ Kirpā kare ṯā mel milā▫e. When the Lord bestows His Mercy, He unites in His Union. ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ हउमै ममता सबदि जलाए ॥ Ha▫umai mamṯā sabaḏ jalā▫e. Egotism and attachment are burned away by the Shabad. ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ सदा मुकतु रहै इक रंगी नाही किसै नालि काहा हे ॥३॥ Saḏā mukaṯ rahai ik rangī nāhī kisai nāl kāhā he. ||3|| In the Love of the One Lord, one remains liberated forever; he is not in conflict with anyone. ||3|| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥ बिनु सतिगुर सेवे घोर अंधारा ॥ Bin saṯgur seve gẖor anḏẖārā. Without serving the True Guru, there is only pitch-black darkness. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰਾ ॥ बिनु सबदै कोइ न पावै पारा ॥ Bin sabḏai ko▫e na pāvai pārā. Without the Shabad, no one crosses over to the other side. ਜੋ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਹਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ जो सबदि राते महा बैरागी सो सचु सबदे लाहा हे ॥४॥ Jo sabaḏ rāṯe mahā bairāgī so sacẖ sabḏe lāhā he. ||4|| Those who are imbued with the Shabad, are very detached. They earn the profit of the True Word of the Shabad. ||4|| ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ दुखु सुखु करतै धुरि लिखि पाइआ ॥ Ḏukẖ sukẖ karṯai ḏẖur likẖ pā▫i▫ā. Pain and pleasure are pre-ordained by the Creator. ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ॥ दूजा भाउ आपि वरताइआ ॥ Ḏūjā bẖā▫o āp varṯā▫i▫ā. He Himself has caused the love of duality to be pervasive. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ गुरमुखि होवै सु अलिपतो वरतै मनमुख का किआ वेसाहा हे ॥५॥ Gurmukẖ hovai so alipaṯo varṯai manmukẖ kā ki▫ā vesāhā he. ||5|| One who becomes Gurmukh remains detached; how can anyone trust the self-willed manmukh? ||5|| ਸੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥ से मनमुख जो सबदु न पछाणहि ॥ Se manmukẖ jo sabaḏ na pacẖẖāṇėh. Those who do not recognize the Shabad are manmukhs. ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਭੈ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥ गुर के भै की सार न जाणहि ॥ Gur ke bẖai kī sār na jāṇėh. They do not know the essence of the Fear of the Guru. ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਮੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਲਏਗਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ भै बिनु किउ निरभउ सचु पाईऐ जमु काढि लएगा साहा हे ॥६॥ Bẖai bin ki▫o nirbẖa▫o sacẖ pā▫ī▫ai jam kādẖ la▫egā sāhā he. ||6|| Without this Fear, how can anyone find the Fearless True Lord? The Messenger of Death will pull the breath out. ||6|| ਅਫਰਿਓ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ अफरिओ जमु मारिआ न जाई ॥ Afri▫o jam māri▫ā na jā▫ī. The invulnerable Messenger of Death cannot be killed. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥ गुर कै सबदे नेड़ि न आई ॥ Gur kai sabḏe neṛ na ā▫ī. The Word of the Guru's Shabad prevents him from approaching. ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਤਾ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਭਾਗੈ ਮਤੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ सबदु सुणे ता दूरहु भागै मतु मारे हरि जीउ वेपरवाहा हे ॥७॥ Sabaḏ suṇe ṯā ḏẖūrahu bẖāgai maṯ māre har jī▫o veparvāhā he. ||7|| When he hears the Word of the Shabad, he runs far away. He is afraid that the self-sufficient Dear Lord will kill him. ||7|| ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥ हरि जीउ की है सभ सिरकारा ॥ Har jī▫o kī hai sabẖ sirkārā. The Dear Lord is the Ruler above all. ਏਹੁ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥ एहु जमु किआ करे विचारा ॥ Ėhu jam ki▫ā kare vicẖārā. What can this wretched Messenger of Death do? ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਢਦਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ हुकमी बंदा हुकमु कमावै हुकमे कढदा साहा हे ॥८॥ Hukmī banḏā hukam kamāvai hukme kadẖ▫ḏā sāhā he. ||8|| As slave to the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the mortal acts according to His Hukam. According to His Hukam, he is deprived of his breath. ||8|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਕੀਆ ਅਕਾਰਾ ॥ गुरमुखि साचै कीआ अकारा ॥ Gurmukẖ sācẖai kī▫ā akārā. The Gurmukh realizes that the True Lord created the creation. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥ गुरमुखि पसरिआ सभु पासारा ॥ Gurmukẖ pasri▫ā sabẖ pāsārā. The Gurmukh knows that the Lord has expanded the entire expanse. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ गुरमुखि होवै सो सचु बूझै सबदि सचै सुखु ताहा हे ॥९॥ Gurmukẖ hovai so sacẖ būjẖai sabaḏ sacẖai sukẖ ṯāhā he. ||9|| One who becomes Gurmukh, understands the True Lord. Through the True Word of the Shabad, he finds peace. ||9|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥ गुरमुखि जाता करमि बिधाता ॥ Gurmukẖ jāṯā karam biḏẖāṯā. The Gurmukh knows that the Lord is the Architect of karma. ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ जुग चारे गुर सबदि पछाता ॥ Jug cẖāre gur sabaḏ pacẖẖāṯā. Throughout the four ages, he recognizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜਨਮੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ गुरमुखि मरै न जनमै गुरमुखि गुरमुखि सबदि समाहा हे ॥१०॥ Gurmukẖ marai na janmai gurmukẖ gurmukẖ sabaḏ samāhā he. ||10|| The Gurmukh does not die, the Gurmukh is not reborn; the Gurmukh is immersed in the Shabad. ||10|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ॥ गुरमुखि नामि सबदि सालाहे ॥ Gurmukẖ nām sabaḏ sālāhe. The Gurmukh praises the Naam, and the Shabad. ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥ अगम अगोचर वेपरवाहे ॥ Agam agocẖar veparvāhe. God is inaccessible, unfathomable and self-sufficient. ਏਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਸਬਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ एक नामि जुग चारि उधारे सबदे नाम विसाहा हे ॥११॥ Ėk nām jug cẖār uḏẖāre sabḏe nām visāhā he. ||11|| The Naam, the Name of the One Lord, saves and redeems throughout the four ages. Through the Shabad, one trades in the Naam. ||11|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ गुरमुखि सांति सदा सुखु पाए ॥ Gurmukẖ sāʼnṯ saḏā sukẖ pā▫e. The Gurmukh obtains eternal peace and tranquility. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ गुरमुखि हिरदै नामु वसाए ॥ Gurmukẖ hirḏai nām vasā▫e. The Gurmukh enshrines the Naam within his heart. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਕਾਟੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ गुरमुखि होवै सो नामु बूझै काटे दुरमति फाहा हे ॥१२॥ Gurmukẖ hovai so nām būjẖai kāte ḏurmaṯ fāhā he. ||12|| One who becomes Gurmukh recognizes the Naam, and the noose of evil-mindedness is snapped. ||12|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ गुरमुखि उपजै साचि समावै ॥ Gurmukẖ upjai sācẖ samāvai. The Gurmukh wells up from, and then merges back into Truth. ਨਾ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਨ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ना मरि जमै न जूनी पावै ॥ Nā mar jammai na jūnī pāvai. He does not die and take birth, and is not consigned to reincarnation. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲੈਦੇ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ गुरमुखि सदा रहहि रंगि राते अनदिनु लैदे लाहा हे ॥१३॥ Gurmukẖ saḏā rahėh rang rāṯe an▫ḏin laiḏe lāhā he. ||13|| The Gurmukh remains forever imbued with the color of the Lord's Love. Night and day, he earns a profit. ||13|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥ गुरमुखि भगत सोहहि दरबारे ॥ Gurmukẖ bẖagaṯ sohėh ḏarbāre. The Gurmukhs, the devotees, are exalted and beautified in the Court of the Lord. ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥ सची बाणी सबदि सवारे ॥ Sacẖī baṇī sabaḏ savāre. They are embellished with the True Word of His Bani, and the Word of the Shabad. ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ अनदिनु गुण गावै दिनु राती सहज सेती घरि जाहा हे ॥१४॥ An▫ḏin guṇ gāvai ḏin rāṯī sahj seṯī gẖar jāhā he. ||14|| Night and day, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, day and night, and they intuitively go to their own home. ||14|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ सतिगुरु पूरा सबदु सुणाए ॥ Saṯgur pūrā sabaḏ suṇā▫e. The Perfect True Guru proclaims the Shabad; ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ अनदिनु भगति करहु लिव लाए ॥ An▫ḏin bẖagaṯ karahu liv lā▫e. night and day, remain lovingly attuned to devotional worship. ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਣ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ हरि गुण गावहि सद ही निरमल निरमल गुण पातिसाहा हे ॥१५॥ Har guṇ gāvahi saḏ hī nirmal nirmal guṇ pāṯisāhā he. ||15|| One who sings forever the Glorious Praises of the Lord, becomes immaculate; Immaculate are the Glorious Praises of the Sovereign Lord. ||15|| ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ गुण का दाता सचा सोई ॥ Guṇ kā ḏāṯā sacẖā so▫ī. The True Lord is the Giver of virtue. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ गुरमुखि विरला बूझै कोई ॥ Gurmukẖ virlā būjẖai ko▫ī. How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, understand this. ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੨॥੧੧॥ नानक जनु नामु सलाहे बिगसै सो नामु बेपरवाहा हे ॥१६॥२॥११॥ Nānak jan nām salāhe bigsai so nām beparvāhā he. ||16||2||11|| Servant Nanak praises the Naam; he blossoms forth in the ecstasy of the Name of the self-sufficient Lord. ||16||2||11||
