ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥ एको सेवी सदा थिरु साचा ॥ Ėko sevī saḏā thir sācẖā. I serve the One Lord, who is eternal, stable and True. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ मारू महला ३ ॥ Mārū mėhlā 3. Maaroo, Third Mehl: ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥ दूजै लागा सभु जगु काचा ॥ Ḏūjai lāgā sabẖ jag kācẖā. Attached to duality, the whole world is false. ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ गुरमती सदा सचु सालाही साचे ही साचि पतीजै हे ॥१॥ Gurmaṯī saḏā sacẖ sālāhī sācẖe hī sācẖ paṯījai he. ||1|| Following the Guru's Teachings, I praise the True Lord forever, pleased with the Truest of the True. ||1|| ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ तेरे गुण बहुते मै एकु न जाता ॥ Ŧere guṇ bahuṯe mai ek na jāṯā. Your Glorious Virtues are so many, Lord; I do not know even one. ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ॥ आपे लाइ लए जगजीवनु दाता ॥ Āpe lā▫e la▫e jagjīvan ḏāṯā. The Life of the world, the Great Giver, attaches us to himself. ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ आपे बखसे दे वडिआई गुरमति इहु मनु भीजै हे ॥२॥ Āpe bakẖse ḏe vadi▫ā▫ī gurmaṯ ih man bẖījai he. ||2|| He Himself forgives, and bestows glorious greatness. Following the Guru's Teachings, this mind is delighted. ||2|| ਮਾਇਆ ਲਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥ माइआ लहरि सबदि निवारी ॥ Mā▫i▫ā lahar sabaḏ nivārī. The Word of the Shabad has subdued the waves of Maya. ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥ इहु मनु निरमलु हउमै मारी ॥ Ih man nirmal ha▫umai mārī. Egotism has been conquered, and this mind has become immaculate. ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ सहजे गुण गावै रंगि राता रसना रामु रवीजै हे ॥३॥ Sėhje guṇ gāvai rang rāṯā rasnā rām ravījai he. ||3|| I intuitively sing His Glorious Praises, imbued with the Lord's Love. My tongue chants and savors the Lord's Name. ||3|| ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਆਰਜਾ ਛੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ जमकालु घड़ी मुहतु निहाले अनदिनु आरजा छीजै हे ॥४॥ Jamkāl gẖaṛī muhaṯ nihāle an▫ḏin ārjā cẖẖījai he. ||4|| The Messenger of Death watches over him every moment, every instant; night and day, his life is wasting away. ||4|| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਫਿਰੈ ਇਆਣੀ ॥ मनमुखि न बूझै फिरै इआणी ॥ Manmukẖ na būjẖai firai i▫āṇī. The self-willed manmukh does not understand; he wanders around in ignorance. ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥ मेरी मेरी करत विहाणी ॥ Merī merī karaṯ vihāṇī. Crying out, "Mine, mine!" he spends his life. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ॥ अंतरि लोभु करै नही बूझै ॥ Anṯar lobẖ karai nahī būjẖai. He practices greed within, and does not understand. ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ॥ सिर ऊपरि जमकालु न सूझै ॥ Sir ūpar jamkāl na sūjẖai. He does not see the Messenger of Death hovering over his head. ਐਥੈ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਆਇਆ ਅੰਤਕਾਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ ऐथै कमाणा सु अगै आइआ अंतकालि किआ कीजै हे ॥५॥ Aithai kamāṇā so agai ā▫i▫ā anṯkāl ki▫ā kījai he. ||5|| Whatever one does in this world, will come to face him in the hereafter; what can he do at that very last moment? ||5|| ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੋਇ ॥ जो सचि लागे तिन साची सोइ ॥ Jo sacẖ lāge ṯin sācẖī so▫e. Those who are attached to the Truth are true. ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰੋਇ ॥ दूजै लागे मनमुखि रोइ ॥ Ḏūjai lāge manmukẖ ro▫e. The self-willed manmukhs, attached to duality, weep and wail. ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਕਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ दुहा सिरिआ का खसमु है आपे आपे गुण महि भीजै हे ॥६॥ Ḏuhā siri▫ā kā kẖasam hai āpe āpe guṇ mėh bẖījai he. ||6|| He is the Lord and Master of both worlds; He Himself delights in virtue. ||6|| ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥ गुर कै सबदि सदा जनु सोहै ॥ Gur kai sabaḏ saḏā jan sohai. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, His humble servant is exalted forever. ਨਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹੈ ॥ नाम रसाइणि इहु मनु मोहै ॥ Nām rasā▫iṇ ih man mohai. This mind is enticed by the Naam, the source of nectar. ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ माइआ मोह मैलु पतंगु न लागै गुरमती हरि नामि भीजै हे ॥७॥ Mā▫i▫ā moh mail paṯang na lāgai gurmaṯī har nām bẖījai he. ||7|| It is not stained at all by the dirt of attachment to Maya; through the Guru's Teachings, it is pleased and saturated with the Lord's Name. ||7|| ਸਭਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ सभना विचि वरतै इकु सोई ॥ Sabẖnā vicẖ varṯai ik so▫ī. The One Lord is contained within all. ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਇ ਸਾਚੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ हउमै मारि सदा सुखु पाइआ नाइ साचै अम्रितु पीजै हे ॥८॥ Ha▫umai mār saḏā sukẖ pā▫i▫ā nā▫e sācẖai amriṯ pījai he. ||8|| One who subdues his ego, finds lasting peace; he drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name. ||8|| ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ गुर परसादी परगटु होई ॥ Gur parsādī pargat ho▫ī. By Guru's Grace, He is revealed. ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ किलबिख दूख निवारणहारा ॥ Kilbikẖ ḏūkẖ nivāraṇhārā. God is the Destroyer of sin and pain. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ गुरमुखि सेविआ सबदि वीचारा ॥ Gurmukẖ sevi▫ā sabaḏ vīcẖārā. The Gurmukh serves Him, and contemplates the Word of the Shabad. ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ सभु किछु आपे आपि वरतै गुरमुखि तनु मनु भीजै हे ॥९॥ Sabẖ kicẖẖ āpe āp varṯai gurmukẖ ṯan man bẖījai he. ||9|| He Himself is pervading everything. The Gurmukh's body and mind are saturated and pleased. ||9|| ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥ माइआ अगनि जलै संसारे ॥ Mā▫i▫ā agan jalai sansāre. The world is burning in the fire of Maya. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ गुरमुखि निवारै सबदि वीचारे ॥ Gurmukẖ nivārai sabaḏ vīcẖāre. The Gurmukh extinguishes this fire, by contemplating the Shabad. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ अंतरि सांति सदा सुखु पाइआ गुरमती नामु लीजै हे ॥१०॥ Anṯar sāʼnṯ saḏā sukẖ pā▫i▫ā gurmaṯī nām lījai he. ||10|| Deep within are peace and tranquility, and lasting peace is obtained. Following the Guru's Teachings, one is blessed with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||10|| ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ इंद्र इंद्रासणि बैठे जम का भउ पावहि ॥ Inḏar inḏarāsaṇ baiṯẖe jam kā bẖa▫o pāvahi. Even Indra, seated upon his throne, is caught in the fear of death. ਜਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥ जमु न छोडै बहु करम कमावहि ॥ Jam na cẖẖodai baho karam kamāvėh. The Messenger of Death will not spare them, even though they try all sorts of things. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ सतिगुरु भेटै ता मुकति पाईऐ हरि हरि रसना पीजै हे ॥११॥ Saṯgur bẖetai ṯā mukaṯ pā▫ī▫ai har har rasnā pījai he. ||11|| When one meets with the True Guru, one is liberated, drinking in and savoring the sublime essence of the Lord, Har, Har. ||11|| ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ मनमुखि अंतरि भगति न होई ॥ Manmukẖ anṯar bẖagaṯ na ho▫ī. There is no devotion within the self-willed manmukh. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ गुरमुखि भगति सांति सुखु होई ॥ Gurmukẖ bẖagaṯ sāʼnṯ sukẖ ho▫ī. Through devotional worship, the Gurmukh obtains peace and tranquility. ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ पवित्र पावन सदा है बाणी गुरमति अंतरु भीजै हे ॥१२॥ Paviṯar pāvan saḏā hai baṇī gurmaṯ anṯar bẖījai he. ||12|| Forever pure and sanctified is the Word of the Guru's Bani; following the Guru's Teachings, one's inner being is drenched in it. ||12|| ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु वीचारी ॥ Barahmā bisan mahes vīcẖārī. I have considered Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਧਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ॥ त्रै गुण बधक मुकति निरारी ॥ Ŧarai guṇ baḏẖak mukaṯ nirārī. They are bound by the three qualities - the three gunas; they are far away from liberation. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਹੈ ਜਾਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ गुरमुखि गिआनु एको है जाता अनदिनु नामु रवीजै हे ॥१३॥ Gurmukẖ gi▫ān eko hai jāṯā an▫ḏin nām ravījai he. ||13|| The Gurmukh knows the spiritual wisdom of the One Lord. Night and day, he chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||13|| ਬੇਦ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ॥ बेद पड़हि हरि नामु न बूझहि ॥ Beḏ paṛėh har nām na būjẖėh. He may read the Vedas, but he does not realize the Lord's Name. ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਲੂਝਹਿ ॥ माइआ कारणि पड़ि पड़ि लूझहि ॥ Mā▫i▫ā kāraṇ paṛ paṛ lūjẖėh. For the sake of Maya, he reads and recites and argues. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ अंतरि मैलु अगिआनी अंधा किउ करि दुतरु तरीजै हे ॥१४॥ Anṯar mail agi▫ānī anḏẖā ki▫o kar ḏuṯar ṯarījai he. ||14|| The ignorant and blind person is filled with filth within. How can he cross over the impassable world-ocean? ||14|| ਬੇਦ ਬਾਦ ਸਭਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥ बेद बाद सभि आखि वखाणहि ॥ Beḏ bāḏ sabẖ ākẖ vakāṇėh. He voices all the controversies of the Vedas, ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਬੇਦਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ पुंनु पापु सभु बेदि द्रिड़ाइआ गुरमुखि अम्रितु पीजै हे ॥१५॥ Punn pāp sabẖ beḏ driṛ▫ā▫i▫ā gurmukẖ amriṯ pījai he. ||15|| The Vedas tell all about virtue and vice, but only the Gurmukh drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||15|| ਨ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਨ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥ न अंतरु भीजै न सबदु पछाणहि ॥ Na anṯar bẖījai na sabaḏ pacẖẖāṇėh. but his inner being is not saturated or satisfied, and he does not realize the Word of the Shabad. ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥ आपे साचा एको सोई ॥ Āpe sācẖā eko so▫ī. The One True Lord is all by Himself. ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ तिसु बिनु दूजा अवरु न कोई ॥ Ŧis bin ḏūjā avar na ko▫ī. There is no one else except Him. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥ नानक नामि रते मनु साचा सचो सचु रवीजै हे ॥१६॥६॥ Nānak nām raṯe man sācẖā sacẖo sacẖ ravījai he. ||16||6|| O Nanak, true is the mind of one who is attuned to the Naam; he speaks Truth, and nothing but Truth. ||16||6||
