ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ आपे आपु उपाइ निराला ॥ Aapé aap upaa▫é niraalaa. He Himself created the creation, remaining unattached. ਸਾਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ਕੀਓ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ साचा थानु कीओ दइआला ॥ Saachaa ṫʰaan kee▫o ḋa▫i▫aalaa. The Merciful Lord has established His True Home. ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਬੰਧਨੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਰਚਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ पउण पाणी अगनी का बंधनु काइआ कोटु रचाइदा ॥१॥ Pa▫uṇ paaṇee agnee kaa banḋʰan kaa▫i▫aa kot rachaa▫iḋaa. ||1|| Binding together air, water and fire, He created the fortress of the body. ||1|| ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਣਹਾਰੈ ॥ नउ घर थापे थापणहारै ॥ Na▫o gʰar ṫʰaapé ṫʰaapaṇhaaræ. The Creator established the nine gates. ਦਸਵੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥ दसवै वासा अलख अपारै ॥ Ḋasvæ vaasaa alakʰ apaaræ. In the Tenth Gate, is the dwelling of the infinite, unseen Lord. ਸਾਇਰ ਸਪਤ ਭਰੇ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ साइर सपत भरे जलि निरमलि गुरमुखि मैलु न लाइदा ॥२॥ Saa▫ir sapaṫ bʰaré jal nirmal gurmukʰ mæl na laa▫iḋaa. ||2|| The seven seas are overflowing with the Ambrosial Water; the Gurmukhs are not stained with filth. ||2|| ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਦੀਪਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥ रवि ससि दीपक जोति सबाई ॥ Rav sas ḋeepak joṫ sabaa▫ee. The lamps of the sun and the moon fill all with light. ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ आपे करि वेखै वडिआई ॥ Aapé kar vékʰæ vadi▫aa▫ee. Creating them, He beholds His own glorious greatness. ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਚੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ जोति सरूप सदा सुखदाता सचे सोभा पाइदा ॥३॥ Joṫ saroop saḋaa sukʰ▫ḋaaṫa saché sobʰaa paa▫iḋaa. ||3|| The Giver of peace is forever the embodiment of Light; from the True Lord, glory is obtained. ||3|| ਗੜ ਮਹਿ ਹਾਟ ਪਟਣ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥ गड़ महि हाट पटण वापारा ॥ Gaṛ mėh haat pataṇ vaapaaraa. Within the fortress are the stores and markets; the business is transacted there. ਪੂਰੈ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋਲੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥ पूरै तोलि तोलै वणजारा ॥ Pooræ ṫol ṫolæ vaṇjaaraa. The Supreme Merchant weighs with the perfect weights. ਆਪੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਹੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ आपे रतनु विसाहे लेवै आपे कीमति पाइदा ॥४॥ Aapé raṫan visaahé lévæ aapé keemaṫ paa▫iḋaa. ||4|| He Himself buys the jewel, and He Himself appraises its value. ||4|| ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਪਾਵਣਹਾਰੈ ॥ कीमति पाई पावणहारै ॥ Keemaṫ paa▫ee paavaṇhaaræ. The Appraiser appraises its value. ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ॥ वेपरवाह पूरे भंडारै ॥ véparvaah pooré bʰandaaræ. The Independent Lord is overflowing with His treasures. ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਲੇ ਆਪੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ सरब कला ले आपे रहिआ गुरमुखि किसै बुझाइदा ॥५॥ Sarab kalaa lé aapé rahi▫aa gurmukʰ kisæ bujʰaa▫iḋaa. ||5|| He holds all powers, He is all-pervading; how few are those who, as Gurmukh, understand this. ||5|| ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ॥ नदरि करे पूरा गुरु भेटै ॥ Naḋar karé pooraa gur bʰétæ. When He bestows His Glance of Grace, one meets the Perfect Guru. ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਰੈ ਫੇਟੈ ॥ जम जंदारु न मारै फेटै ॥ Jam janḋaar na maaræ fétæ. The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot strike him then. ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਬਿਗਸਿ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ जिउ जल अंतरि कमलु बिगासी आपे बिगसि धिआइदा ॥६॥ Ji▫o jal anṫar kamal bigaasee aapé bigas ḋʰi▫aa▫iḋaa. ||6|| He blossoms forth like the lotus flower in the water; he blossoms forth in joyful meditation. ||6|| ਆਪੇ ਵਰਖੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰਾ ॥ आपे वरखै अमृत धारा ॥ Aapé varkʰæ amriṫ ḋʰaaraa. He Himself rains down the Ambrosial Stream of ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ रतन जवेहर लाल अपारा ॥ Raṫan javéhar laal apaaraa. jewels, diamonds, and rubies of priceless value. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ सतिगुरु मिलै त पूरा पाईऐ प्रेम पदारथु पाइदा ॥७॥ Saṫgur milæ ṫa pooraa paa▫ee▫æ parém paḋaaraṫʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||7|| When they meet the True Guru, then they find the Perfect Lord; they obtain the treasure of Love. ||7|| ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਲਹੈ ਅਮੋਲੋ ॥ प्रेम पदारथु लहै अमोलो ॥ Parém paḋaaraṫʰ lahæ amolo. Whoever receives the priceless treasure of Love - ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਘਾਟਸਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੋ ॥ कब ही न घाटसि पूरा तोलो ॥ Kab hee na gʰaatas pooraa ṫolo. his weight never decreases; he has perfect weight. ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚੋ ਸਉਦਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ सचे का वापारी होवै सचो सउदा पाइदा ॥८॥ Saché kaa vaapaaree hovæ sacho sa▫uḋaa paa▫iḋaa. ||8|| The trader of Truth becomes true, and obtains the merchandise. ||8|| ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥ सचा सउदा विरला को पाए ॥ Sachaa sa▫uḋaa virlaa ko paa▫é. How rare are those who obtain the true merchandise. ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ पूरा सतिगुरु मिलै मिलाए ॥ Pooraa saṫgur milæ milaa▫é. Meeting the Perfect True Guru, one meets with the Lord. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ गुरमुखि होइ सु हुकमु पछाणै मानै हुकमु समाइदा ॥९॥ Gurmukʰ ho▫é so hukam pachʰaaṇæ maanæ hukam samaa▫iḋaa. ||9|| One who becomes Gurmukh realizes the Hukam of His command; surrendering to His Command, one merges into the Lord. ||9|| ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਇਆ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ हुकमे आइआ हुकमि समाइआ ॥ Hukmé aa▫i▫aa hukam samaa▫i▫aa. By His Command we come, and by His command we merge into Him again. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਦੀਸੈ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ हुकमे दीसै जगतु उपाइआ ॥ Hukmé ḋeesæ jagaṫ upaa▫i▫aa. By His Command, the world was formed. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲਾ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਲਾ ਰਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ हुकमे सुरगु मछु पइआला हुकमे कला रहाइदा ॥१०॥ Hukmé surag machʰ pa▫i▫aalaa hukmé kalaa rahaa▫iḋaa. ||10|| By His Command, the heavens, this world and the nether regions were created; by His Command, His Power supports them. ||10|| ਹੁਕਮੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਧਉਲ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੰ ॥ हुकमे धरती धउल सिरि भारं ॥ Hukmé ḋʰarṫee ḋʰa▫ul sir bʰaaraⁿ. The Hukam of His Command is the mythical bull which supports the burden of the earth on its head. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਗੈਣਾਰੰ ॥ हुकमे पउण पाणी गैणारं ॥ Hukmé pa▫uṇ paaṇee gæṇaaraⁿ. By His Hukam, air, water and fire came into being. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਖੇਲ ਖੇਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ हुकमे सिव सकती घरि वासा हुकमे खेल खेलाइदा ॥११॥ Hukmé siv sakṫee gʰar vaasaa hukmé kʰél kʰélaa▫iḋaa. ||11|| By His Hukam, one dwells in the house of matter and energy - Shiva and Shakti. By His Hukam, He plays His plays. ||11|| ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਡਾਣੇ ਆਗਾਸੀ ॥ हुकमे आडाणे आगासी ॥ Hukmé aadaaṇé aagaasee. By the Hukam of His command, the sky is spread above. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਲ ਥਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਵਾਸੀ ॥ हुकमे जल थल त्रिभवण वासी ॥ Hukmé jal ṫʰal ṫaribʰavaṇ vaasee. By His Hukam, His creatures dwell in the water, on the land and throughout the three worlds. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ हुकमे सास गिरास सदा फुनि हुकमे देखि दिखाइदा ॥१२॥ Hukmé saas giraas saḋaa fun hukmé ḋékʰ ḋikʰaa▫iḋaa. ||12|| By His Hukam, we draw our breath and receive our food; by His Hukam, He watches over us, and inspires us to see. ||12|| ਹੁਕਮਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਦਸ ਅਉਤਾਰਾ ॥ हुकमि उपाए दस अउतारा ॥ Hukam upaa▫é ḋas a▫uṫaaraa. By His Hukam, He created His ten incarnations, ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵ ਅਗਣਤ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ देव दानव अगणत अपारा ॥ Ḋév ḋaanav agṇaṫ apaaraa. and the uncounted and infinite gods and devils. ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਝੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ मानै हुकमु सु दरगह पैझै साचि मिलाइ समाइदा ॥१३॥ Maanæ hukam so ḋargėh pæjʰæ saach milaa▫é samaa▫iḋaa. ||13|| Whoever obeys the Hukam of His Command, is robed with honor in the Court of the Lord; united with the Truth, He merges into the Lord. ||13|| ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਗੁਦਾਰੇ ॥ हुकमे जुग छतीह गुदारे ॥ Hukmé jug chʰaṫeeh guḋaaré. By the Hukam of His Command, the thirty-six ages passed. ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ हुकमे सिध साधिक वीचारे ॥ Hukmé siḋʰ saaḋʰik veechaaré. By His Hukam, the Siddhas and seekers contemplate Him. ਆਪਿ ਨਾਥੁ ਨਥੀ ਸਭ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਬਖਸੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ आपि नाथु नथीं सभ जा की बखसे मुकति कराइदा ॥१४॥ Aap naaṫʰ naṫʰeeⁿ sabʰ jaa kee bakʰsé mukaṫ karaa▫iḋaa. ||14|| The Lord Himself has brought all under His control. Whoever He forgives, is liberated. ||14|| ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਗੜੈ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾ ॥ काइआ कोटु गड़ै महि राजा ॥ Kaa▫i▫aa kot gaṛæ mėh raajaa. There is king in the strong fortress of the body, ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸ ਭਲਾ ਦਰਵਾਜਾ ॥ नेब खवास भला दरवाजा ॥ Néb kʰavaas bʰalaa ḋarvaajaa. with its beautiful doors and special assistants and ministers. ਮਿਥਿਆ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਲਬਿ ਪਾਪਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ मिथिआ लोभु नाही घरि वासा लबि पापि पछुताइदा ॥१५॥ Miṫʰi▫aa lobʰ naahee gʰar vaasaa lab paap pachʰuṫaa▫iḋaa. ||15|| Those gripped by falsehood and greed do not dwell in the celestial home; engrossed in greed and sin, they come to regret and repent. ||15|| ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਰੀ ॥ सतु संतोखु नगर महि कारी ॥ Saṫ sanṫokʰ nagar mėh kaaree. Truth and contentment govern this body-village. ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥ जतु सतु संजमु सरणि मुरारी ॥ Jaṫ saṫ sanjam saraṇ muraaree. Chastity, truth and self-control are in the Sanctuary of the Lord. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੪॥੧੬॥ नानक सहजि मिलै जगजीवनु गुर सबदी पति पाइदा ॥१६॥४॥१६॥ Naanak sahj milæ jagjeevan gur sabḋee paṫ paa▫iḋaa. ||16||4||16|| O Nanak! One intuitively meets the Lord, the Life of the World; the Word of the Guru’s Shabad brings honor. ||16||4||16||
