ਸੁੰਨ ਕਲਾ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ सुंन कला अपर्मपरि धारी ॥ Sunn kalaa aprampar ḋʰaaree. In the Primal Void, the Infinite Lord assumed His Power. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥ आपि निरालमु अपर अपारी ॥ Aap niraalam apar apaaree. He Himself is unattached, infinite and incomparable. ਆਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਸੁੰਨੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ आपे कुदरति करि करि देखै सुंनहु सुंनु उपाइदा ॥१॥ Aapé kuḋraṫ kar kar ḋékʰæ sunnahu sunn upaa▫iḋaa. ||1|| He Himself exercised His Creative Power, and He gazes upon His creation; from the Primal Void, He formed the Void. ||1|| ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਸੁੰਨੈ ਤੇ ਸਾਜੇ ॥ पउणु पाणी सुंनै ते साजे ॥ Pa▫uṇ paaṇee sunnæ ṫé saajé. From this Primal Void, He fashioned air and water. ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਕਾਇਆ ਗੜ ਰਾਜੇ ॥ स्रिसटि उपाइ काइआ गड़ राजे ॥ Sarisat upaa▫é kaa▫i▫aa gaṛ raajé. He created the universe, and the king in the fortress of the body. ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੀਉ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਸੁੰਨੇ ਕਲਾ ਰਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ अगनि पाणी जीउ जोति तुमारी सुंने कला रहाइदा ॥२॥ Agan paaṇee jee▫o joṫ ṫumaaree sunné kalaa rahaa▫iḋaa. ||2|| Your Light pervades fire, water and souls; Your Power rests in the Primal Void. ||2|| ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ॥ सुंनहु ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु उपाए ॥ Sunnahu barahmaa bisan mahés upaa▫é. From this Primal Void, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva issued forth. ਸੁੰਨੇ ਵਰਤੇ ਜੁਗ ਸਬਾਏ ॥ सुंने वरते जुग सबाए ॥ Sunné varṫé jug sabaa▫é. This Primal Void is pervasive throughout all the ages. ਇਸੁ ਪਦ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ इसु पद वीचारे सो जनु पूरा तिसु मिलीऐ भरमु चुकाइदा ॥३॥ Is paḋ veechaaré so jan pooraa ṫis milee▫æ bʰaram chukaa▫iḋaa. ||3|| That humble being who contemplates this state is perfect; meeting with him, doubt is dispelled. ||3|| ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਸਪਤ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਥਾਪੇ ॥ सुंनहु सपत सरोवर थापे ॥ Sunnahu sapaṫ sarovar ṫʰaapé. From this Primal Void, the seven seas were established. ਤਿਤੁ ਸਤ ਸਰਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ तितु सत सरि मनूआ गुरमुखि नावै फिरि बाहुड़ि जोनि न पाइदा ॥४॥ Ṫiṫ saṫ sar manoo▫aa gurmukʰ naavæ fir baahuṛ jon na paa▫iḋaa. ||4|| That human being who becomes Gurmukh, who bathes in the pool of Truth, is not cast into the womb of reincarnation again. ||4|| ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਜੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਆਪੇ ॥ जिनि साजे वीचारे आपे ॥ Jin saajé veechaaré aapé. The One who created them, Himself contemplates them. ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਗੈਣਾਰੇ ॥ सुंनहु चंदु सूरजु गैणारे ॥ Sunnahu chanḋ sooraj gæṇaaré. From this Primal Void, came the moon, the sun and the earth. ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸਾਰੇ ॥ तिस की जोति त्रिभवण सारे ॥ Ṫis kee joṫ ṫaribʰavaṇ saaré. His Light pervades all the three worlds. ਸੁੰਨੇ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਸੁੰਨੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ सुंने अलख अपार निरालमु सुंने ताड़ी लाइदा ॥५॥ Sunné alakʰ apaar niraalam sunné ṫaaṛee laa▫iḋaa. ||5|| The Lord of this Primal Void is unseen, infinite and immaculate; He is absorbed in the Primal Trance of Deep Meditation. ||5|| ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਧਰਤਿ ਅਕਾਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ॥ सुंनहु धरति अकासु उपाए ॥ Sunnahu ḋʰaraṫ akaas upaa▫é. From this Primal Void, the earth and the Akashic Ethers were created. ਬਿਨੁ ਥੰਮਾ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਲ ਪਾਏ ॥ बिनु थंमा राखे सचु कल पाए ॥ Bin ṫʰammaa raakʰé sach kal paa▫é. He supports them without any visible support, by exercising His True Power. ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸਾਜਿ ਮੇਖੁਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਖਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ त्रिभवण साजि मेखुली माइआ आपि उपाइ खपाइदा ॥६॥ Ṫaribʰavaṇ saaj mékʰulee maa▫i▫aa aap upaa▫é kʰapaa▫iḋaa. ||6|| He fashioned the three worlds, and the rope of Maya; He Himself creates and destroys. ||6|| ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਖਾਣੀ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ सुंनहु खाणी सुंनहु बाणी ॥ Sunnahu kʰaaṇee sunnahu baṇee. From this Primal Void, came the four sources of creation, and the power of speech. ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਉਪਜੀ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥ सुंनहु उपजी सुंनि समाणी ॥ Sunnahu upjee sunn samaaṇee. They were created from the Void, and they will merge into the Void. ਉਤਭੁਜੁ ਚਲਤੁ ਕੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਦੇਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ उतभुजु चलतु कीआ सिरि करतै बिसमादु सबदि देखाइदा ॥७॥ Uṫ▫bʰuj chalaṫ kee▫aa sir karṫæ bismaaḋ sabaḋ ḋékʰaa▫iḋaa. ||7|| The Supreme Creator created the play of Nature; through the Word of His Shabad, He stages His Wondrous Show. ||7|| ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਦੁਇ ਕੀਏ ॥ सुंनहु राति दिनसु दुइ कीए ॥ Sunnahu raaṫ ḋinas ḋu▫é kee▫é. From this Primal Void, He made both night and day; ਓਪਤਿ ਖਪਤਿ ਸੁਖਾ ਦੁਖ ਦੀਏ ॥ ओपति खपति सुखा दुख दीए ॥ Opaṫ kʰapaṫ sukʰaa ḋukʰ ḋee▫é. creation and destruction, pleasure and pain. ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਅਮਰੁ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ सुख दुख ही ते अमरु अतीता गुरमुखि निज घरु पाइदा ॥८॥ Sukʰ ḋukʰ hee ṫé amar aṫeeṫaa gurmukʰ nij gʰar paa▫iḋaa. ||8|| The Gurmukh is immortal, untouched by pleasure and pain. He obtains the home of his own inner being. ||8|| ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋ ਤਿਉ ਬੋਲੇ ਜਿਉ ਬੋਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ ता की कीमति कहि न सकै को तिउ बोले जिउ बोलाइदा ॥९॥ Ṫaa kee keemaṫ kahi na sakæ ko ṫi▫o bolé ji▫o bolaa▫iḋaa. ||9|| None of them can describe His worth. We speak as He inspires us to speak. ||9|| ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ॥ ब्रहमे मुखि माइआ है त्रै गुण ॥ Barahmé mukʰ maa▫i▫aa hæ ṫaræ guṇ. form the mouth of Brahma; they speak of the three gunas, the three qualities of Maya. ਸਾਮ ਵੇਦੁ ਰਿਗੁ ਜੁਜਰੁ ਅਥਰਬਣੁ ॥ साम वेदु रिगु जुजरु अथरबणु ॥ Saam véḋ rig jujar aṫʰarbaṇ. The Sama Veda, the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda and the Atharva Veda ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਸਪਤ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਉਪਾਏ ॥ सुंनहु सपत पाताल उपाए ॥ Sunnahu sapaṫ paaṫaal upaa▫é. From the Primal Void, He created the seven nether regions. ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਭਵਣ ਰਖੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ सुंनहु भवण रखे लिव लाए ॥ Sunnahu bʰavaṇ rakʰé liv laa▫é. From the Primal Void, He established this world to lovingly dwell upon Him. ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਆ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ आपे कारणु कीआ अपर्मपरि सभु तेरो कीआ कमाइदा ॥१०॥ Aapé kaaraṇ kee▫aa aprampar sabʰ ṫéro kee▫aa kamaa▫iḋaa. ||10|| The Infinite Lord Himself created the creation. Everyone acts as You make them act, Lord. ||10|| ਰਜ ਤਮ ਸਤ ਕਲ ਤੇਰੀ ਛਾਇਆ ॥ रज तम सत कल तेरी छाइआ ॥ Raj ṫam saṫ kal ṫéree chʰaa▫i▫aa. Your Power is diffused through the three gunas: raajas, taamas and satva. ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ जनम मरण हउमै दुखु पाइआ ॥ Janam maraṇ ha▫umæ ḋukʰ paa▫i▫aa. Through egotism, they suffer the pains of birth and death. ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣਿ ਚਉਥੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ जिस नो क्रिपा करे हरि गुरमुखि गुणि चउथै मुकति कराइदा ॥११॥ Jis no kirpaa karé har gurmukʰ guṇ cha▫uṫʰæ mukaṫ karaa▫iḋaa. ||11|| Those blessed by His Grace become Gurmukh; they attain the fourth state, and are liberated. ||11|| ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਉਪਜੇ ਦਸ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥ सुंनहु उपजे दस अवतारा ॥ Sunnahu upjé ḋas avṫaaraa. From the Primal Void, the ten incarnations welled up. ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬ ਸਾਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ देव दानव गण गंधरब साजे सभि लिखिआ करम कमाइदा ॥१२॥ Ḋév ḋaanav gaṇ ganḋʰarab saajé sabʰ likʰi▫aa karam kamaa▫iḋaa. ||12|| He fashioned the demi-gods and demons, the heavenly heralds and celestial musicians; everyone acts according to their past karma. ||12|| ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੀਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥ स्रिसटि उपाइ कीआ पासारा ॥ Sarisat upaa▫é kee▫aa paasaaraa. Creating the Universe, He made the expanse. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮਝੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ गुरमुखि समझै रोगु न होई ॥ Gurmukʰ samjʰæ rog na ho▫ee. The Gurmukh understands, and does not suffer the disease. ਇਹ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ इह गुर की पउड़ी जाणै जनु कोई ॥ Ih gur kee pa▫oṛee jaaṇæ jan ko▫ee. How rare are those who understand this ladder of the Guru. ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ जुगह जुगंतरि मुकति पराइण सो मुकति भइआ पति पाइदा ॥१३॥ Jugah juganṫar mukaṫ paraa▫iṇ so mukaṫ bʰa▫i▫aa paṫ paa▫iḋaa. ||13|| Throughout the ages, they are dedicated to liberation, and so they become liberated; thus, they are honored. ||13|| ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥ पंच ततु सुंनहु परगासा ॥ Panch ṫaṫ sunnahu pargaasaa. From the Primal Void, the five elements became manifest. ਦੇਹ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਕਰਮ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥ देह संजोगी करम अभिआसा ॥ Ḋéh sanjogee karam abʰi▫aasaa. They joined to form the body, which engages in actions. ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੀਖੇ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ बुरा भला दुइ मसतकि लीखे पापु पुंनु बीजाइदा ॥१४॥ Buraa bʰalaa ḋu▫é masṫak leekʰé paap punn beejaa▫iḋaa. ||14|| Both bad and good are written on the forehead, the seeds of vice and virtue. ||14|| ਰਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ रिधि बुधि सिधि गिआनु गुरू ते पाईऐ पूरै भागि मिलाइदा ॥१५॥ Riḋʰ buḋʰ siḋʰ gi▫aan guroo ṫé paa▫ee▫æ pooræ bʰaag milaa▫iḋaa. ||15|| Riches, intellect, miraculous spiritual powers and spiritual wisdom are obtained from the Guru; through perfect destiny, they are received. ||15|| ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਤਵਾਲੇ ॥ सबदि रते हरि रसि मतवाले ॥ Sabaḋ raṫé har ras maṫvaalé. Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, He is intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord. ਊਤਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ॥ ऊतम सतिगुर पुरख निराले ॥ Ooṫam saṫgur purakʰ niraalé. The True Guru, the Primal Being, is sublime and detached. ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਘਨੇਰਾ ॥ इसु मन माइआ कउ नेहु घनेरा ॥ Is man maa▫i▫aa ka▫o néhu gʰanéraa. This mind is so in love with Maya. ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥ कोई बूझहु गिआनी करहु निबेरा ॥ Ko▫ee boojʰhu gi▫aanee karahu nibéraa. Only a few are spiritually wise enough to understand and know this. ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਹਸਾ ਨਰੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥ आसा मनसा हउमै सहसा नरु लोभी कूड़ु कमाइदा ॥१६॥ Aasaa mansaa ha▫umæ sahsaa nar lobʰee kooṛ kamaa▫iḋaa. ||16|| In hope and desire, egotism and skepticism, the greedy man acts falsely. ||16|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ सतिगुर ते पाए वीचारा ॥ Saṫgur ṫé paa▫é veechaaraa. From the True Guru, contemplative meditation is obtained. ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸਚੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥ सुंन समाधि सचे घर बारा ॥ Sunn samaaḋʰ saché gʰar baaraa. And then, one dwells with the True Lord in His celestial home, the Primal State of Absorption in Deepest Samadhi. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਦੁ ਸਬਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੭॥੫॥੧੭॥ नानक निरमल नादु सबद धुनि सचु रामै नामि समाइदा ॥१७॥५॥१७॥ Naanak nirmal naaḋ sabaḋ ḋʰun sach raamæ naam samaa▫iḋaa. ||17||5||17|| O Nanak! The immaculate sound current of the Naad, and the Music of the Shabad resound; one merges into the True Name of the Lord. ||17||5||17||
