ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਦਖਣੀ ॥ मारू महला १ दखणी ॥ Mārū mėhlā 1 ḏakẖ▫ṇī. Maaroo, First Mehl, Dakhanee: ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਨਗਰ ਗੜ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥ काइआ नगरु नगर गड़ अंदरि ॥ Kā▫i▫ā nagar nagar gaṛ anḏar. Deep within the body-village is the fortress. ਸਾਚਾ ਵਾਸਾ ਪੁਰਿ ਗਗਨੰਦਰਿ ॥ साचा वासा पुरि गगनंदरि ॥ Sācẖā vāsā pur gagnanḏar. The dwelling of the True Lord is within the city of the Tenth Gate. ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ असथिरु थानु सदा निरमाइलु आपे आपु उपाइदा ॥१॥ Asthir thān saḏā nirmā▫il āpe āp upā▫iḏā. ||1|| This place is permanent and forever immaculate. He Himself created it. ||1|| ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਛਜੇ ਹਟਨਾਲੇ ॥ अंदरि कोट छजे हटनाले ॥ Anḏar kot cẖẖaje hatnāle. Within the fortress are balconies and bazaars. ਆਪੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥ आपे लेवै वसतु समाले ॥ Āpe levai vasaṯ samāle. He Himself takes care of His merchandise. ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਜੜੇ ਜੜਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਖੋਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ बजर कपाट जड़े जड़ि जाणै गुर सबदी खोलाइदा ॥२॥ Bajar kapāt jaṛe jaṛ jāṇai gur sabḏī kẖolā▫iḏā. ||2|| The hard and heavy doors of the Tenth Gate are closed and locked. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they are thrown open. ||2|| ਭੀਤਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਗੁਫਾ ਘਰ ਜਾਈ ॥ भीतरि कोट गुफा घर जाई ॥ Bẖīṯar kot gufā gẖar jā▫ī. Within the fortress is the cave, the home of the self. ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥ नउ घर थापे हुकमि रजाई ॥ Na▫o gẖar thāpe hukam rajā▫ī. He established the nine gates of this house, by His Command and His Will. ਦਸਵੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੀ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ दसवै पुरखु अलेखु अपारी आपे अलखु लखाइदा ॥३॥ Ḏasvai purakẖ alekẖ apārī āpe alakẖ lakẖā▫iḏā. ||3|| In the Tenth Gate, the Primal Lord, the unknowable and infinite dwells; the unseen Lord reveals Himself. ||3|| ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਇਕ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ पउण पाणी अगनी इक वासा ॥ Pa▫uṇ pāṇī agnī ik vāsā. Within the body of air, water and fire, the One Lord dwells. ਆਪੇ ਕੀਤੋ ਖੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥ आपे कीतो खेलु तमासा ॥ Āpe kīṯo kẖel ṯamāsā. He Himself stages His wondrous dramas and plays. ਬਲਦੀ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ बलदी जलि निवरै किरपा ते आपे जल निधि पाइदा ॥४॥ Balḏī jal nivrai kirpā ṯe āpe jal niḏẖ pā▫iḏā. ||4|| By His Grace, water puts out the burning fire; He Himself stores it up in the watery ocean. ||4|| ਧਰਤਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਧਰੀ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲਾ ॥ धरति उपाइ धरी धरम साला ॥ Ḏẖaraṯ upā▫e ḏẖarī ḏẖaram sālā. Creating the earth, He established it as the home of Dharma. ਉਤਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ उतपति परलउ आपि निराला ॥ Uṯpaṯ parla▫o āp nirālā. Creating and destroying, He remains unattached. ਪਵਣੈ ਖੇਲੁ ਕੀਆ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ਕਲਾ ਖਿੰਚਿ ਢਾਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ पवणै खेलु कीआ सभ थाई कला खिंचि ढाहाइदा ॥५॥ Pavṇai kẖel kī▫ā sabẖ thā▫ī kalā kẖincẖ dẖāhā▫iḏā. ||5|| He stages the play of the breath everywhere. Withdrawing His power, He lets the beings crumble. ||5|| ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮਾਲਣਿ ਤੇਰੀ ॥ भार अठारह मालणि तेरी ॥ Bẖār aṯẖārah mālaṇ ṯerī. Your gardener is the vast vegetation of nature. ਚਉਰੁ ਢੁਲੈ ਪਵਣੈ ਲੈ ਫੇਰੀ ॥ चउरु ढुलै पवणै लै फेरी ॥ Cẖa▫ur dẖulai pavṇai lai ferī. The wind blowing around is the chauree, the fly-brush, waving over You. ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਦੀਪਕ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ चंदु सूरजु दुइ दीपक राखे ससि घरि सूरु समाइदा ॥६॥ Cẖanḏ sūraj ḏu▫e ḏīpak rākẖe sas gẖar sūr samā▫iḏā. ||6|| The Lord placed the two lamps, the sun and the moon; the sun merges in the house of the moon. ||6|| ਸਫਲਿਓ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ सफलिओ बिरखु अम्रित फलु पावहि ॥ Safli▫o birakẖ amriṯ fal pāvahi. The tree of life is fruitful, bearing the fruit of Ambrosial Nectar. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ गुरमुखि सहजि रवै गुण गावै हरि रसु चोग चुगाइदा ॥७॥ Gurmukẖ sahj ravai guṇ gāvai har ras cẖog cẖugā▫iḏā. ||7|| The Gurmukh intuitively sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he eats the food of the Lord's sublime essence. ||7|| ਪੰਖੀ ਪੰਚ ਉਡਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ पंखी पंच उडरि नही धावहि ॥ Pankẖī pancẖ udar nahī ḏẖāvėh. The five birds do not fly wild. ਝਿਲਮਿਲਿ ਝਿਲਕੈ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਤਾਰਾ ॥ झिलमिलि झिलकै चंदु न तारा ॥ Jẖilmil jẖilkai cẖanḏ na ṯārā. The dazzling light glitters, although neither the moon nor the stars are shining; ਸੂਰਜ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਨ ਬਿਜੁਲਿ ਗੈਣਾਰਾ ॥ सूरज किरणि न बिजुलि गैणारा ॥ Sūraj kiraṇ na bijul gẖaiṇārā. neither the sun's rays nor the lightning flashes across the sky. ਅਕਥੀ ਕਥਉ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ अकथी कथउ चिहनु नही कोई पूरि रहिआ मनि भाइदा ॥८॥ Akthī katha▫o cẖihan nahī ko▫ī pūr rahi▫ā man bẖā▫iḏā. ||8|| I describe the indescribable state, which has no sign, where the all-pervading Lord is still pleasing to the mind. ||8|| ਪਸਰੀ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਉਜਿਆਲਾ ॥ पसरी किरणि जोति उजिआला ॥ Pasrī kiraṇ joṯ uji▫ālā. The rays of Divine Light have spread out their brilliant radiance. ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ करि करि देखै आपि दइआला ॥ Kar kar ḏekẖai āp ḏa▫i▫ālā. Having created the creation, the Merciful Lord Himself gazes upon it. ਅਨਹਦ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ अनहद रुण झुणकारु सदा धुनि निरभउ कै घरि वाइदा ॥९॥ Anhaḏ ruṇ jẖuṇkār saḏā ḏẖun nirbẖa▫o kai gẖar vā▫iḏā. ||9|| The sweet, melodious, unstruck sound current vibrates continuously in the home of the fearless Lord. ||9|| ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਤੂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ सभ तेरी तू गुरमुखि जाता दरि सोहै गुण गाइदा ॥१०॥ Sabẖ ṯerī ṯū gurmukẖ jāṯā ḏar sohai guṇ gā▫iḏā. ||10|| All belong to You; to the Gurmukhs, You are known. Singing Your Praises, they look beautiful in Your Court. ||10|| ਸਗਲ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਛਾਜੈ ॥ सगल बिआपि रहिआ प्रभु छाजै ॥ Sagal bi▫āp rahi▫ā parabẖ cẖẖājai. God is all-pervading, giving shade to all. ਅਨਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਜੈ ॥ अनहदु वाजै भ्रमु भउ भाजै ॥ Anhaḏ vājai bẖaram bẖa▫o bẖājai. When the unstruck sound current resounds, doubt and fear run away. ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ आदि निरंजनु निरमलु सोई ॥ Āḏ niranjan nirmal so▫ī. He is the Primal Lord, immaculate and pure. ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ॥ अवरु न जाणा दूजा कोई ॥ Avar na jāṇā ḏūjā ko▫ī. I know of no other at all. ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਗਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ एकंकारु वसै मनि भावै हउमै गरबु गवाइदा ॥११॥ Ėkankār vasai man bẖāvai ha▫umai garab gavā▫iḏā. ||11|| The One Universal Creator Lord dwells within, and is pleasing to the mind of those who banish egotism and pride. ||11|| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥ अम्रितु पीआ सतिगुरि दीआ ॥ Amriṯ pī▫ā saṯgur ḏī▫ā. I drink in the Ambrosial Nectar, given by the True Guru. ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਦੂਆ ਤੀਆ ॥ अवरु न जाणा दूआ तीआ ॥ Avar na jāṇā ḏū▫ā ṯī▫ā. I do not know any other second or third. ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਸੁ ਅਪਰ ਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਪਰਖਿ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ एको एकु सु अपर पर्मपरु परखि खजानै पाइदा ॥१२॥ Ėko ek so apar parampar parakẖ kẖajānai pā▫iḏā. ||12|| He is the One, Unique, Infinite and Endless Lord; He evaluates all beings and places some in His treasury. ||12|| ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥ गिआनु धिआनु सचु गहिर ग्मभीरा ॥ Gi▫ān ḏẖi▫ān sacẖ gahir gambẖīrā. Spiritual wisdom and meditation on the True Lord are deep and profound. ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚੀਰਾ ॥ कोइ न जाणै तेरा चीरा ॥ Ko▫e na jāṇai ṯerā cẖīrā. No one knows Your expanse. ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੈ ॥ करमु धरमु सचु हाथि तुमारै ॥ Karam ḏẖaram sacẖ hāth ṯumārai. You hold karma and Dharma in Your hands, O True Lord. ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ जेती है तेती तुधु जाचै करमि मिलै सो पाइदा ॥१३॥ Jeṯī hai ṯeṯī ṯuḏẖ jācẖai karam milai so pā▫iḏā. ||13|| All that are, beg from You; You are attained only by Your Grace. ||13|| ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਅਖੁਟ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ॥ वेपरवाह अखुट भंडारै ॥ veparvāh akẖut bẖandārai. O Independent Lord, Your treasures are inexhaustible. ਤੂ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ तू दइआलु किरपालु सदा प्रभु आपे मेलि मिलाइदा ॥१४॥ Ŧū ḏa▫i▫āl kirpāl saḏā parabẖ āpe mel milā▫iḏā. ||14|| You are forever kind and compassionate, God. You unite in Your Union. ||14|| ਆਪੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਆਪੇ ॥ आपे देखि दिखावै आपे ॥ Āpe ḏekẖ ḏikẖāvai āpe. You Yourself see, and cause Yourself to be seen. ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥ आपे थापि उथापे आपे ॥ Āpe thāp uthāpe āpe. You Yourself establish, and You Yourself disestablish. ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ आपे जोड़ि विछोड़े करता आपे मारि जीवाइदा ॥१५॥ Āpe joṛ vicẖẖoṛe karṯā āpe mār jīvā▫iḏā. ||15|| The Creator Himself unites and separates; He Himself kills and rejuvenates. ||15|| ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥ जेती है तेती तुधु अंदरि ॥ Jeṯī hai ṯeṯī ṯuḏẖ anḏar. As much as there is, is contained within You. ਦੇਖਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰਿ ॥ देखहि आपि बैसि बिज मंदरि ॥ Ḏekẖėh āp bais bij manḏar. You gaze upon Your creation, sitting within Your royal palace. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੩॥ नानकु साचु कहै बेनंती हरि दरसनि सुखु पाइदा ॥१६॥१॥१३॥ Nānak sācẖ kahai benanṯī har ḏarsan sukẖ pā▫iḏā. ||16||1||13|| Nanak offers this true prayer; gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, I have found peace. ||16||1||13||
