ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਦਖਣੀ ॥ मारू महला १ दखणी ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1 ḋakʰ▫ṇee. Maaroo, First Mehl, Dakhanee: ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਨਗਰ ਗੜ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥ काइआ नगरु नगर गड़ अंदरि ॥ Kaa▫i▫aa nagar nagar gaṛ anḋar. Deep within the body-village is the fortress. ਸਾਚਾ ਵਾਸਾ ਪੁਰਿ ਗਗਨੰਦਰਿ ॥ साचा वासा पुरि गगनंदरि ॥ Saachaa vaasaa pur gagnanḋar. The dwelling of the True Lord is within the city of the Tenth Gate. ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ असथिरु थानु सदा निरमाइलु आपे आपु उपाइदा ॥१॥ Asṫʰir ṫʰaan saḋaa nirmaa▫il aapé aap upaa▫iḋaa. ||1|| This place is permanent and forever immaculate. He Himself created it. ||1|| ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਛਜੇ ਹਟਨਾਲੇ ॥ अंदरि कोट छजे हटनाले ॥ Anḋar kot chʰajé hatnaalé. Within the fortress are balconies and bazaars. ਆਪੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥ आपे लेवै वसतु समाले ॥ Aapé lévæ vasaṫ samaalé. He Himself takes care of His merchandise. ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਜੜੇ ਜੜਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਖੋਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ बजर कपाट जड़े जड़ि जाणै गुर सबदी खोलाइदा ॥२॥ Bajar kapaat jaṛé jaṛ jaaṇæ gur sabḋee kʰolaa▫iḋaa. ||2|| The hard and heavy doors of the Tenth Gate are closed and locked. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they are thrown open. ||2|| ਭੀਤਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਗੁਫਾ ਘਰ ਜਾਈ ॥ भीतरि कोट गुफा घर जाई ॥ Bʰeeṫar kot gufaa gʰar jaa▫ee. Within the fortress is the cave, the home of the self. ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥ नउ घर थापे हुकमि रजाई ॥ Na▫o gʰar ṫʰaapé hukam rajaa▫ee. He established the nine gates of this house, by His Command and His Will. ਦਸਵੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੀ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ दसवै पुरखु अलेखु अपारी आपे अलखु लखाइदा ॥३॥ Ḋasvæ purakʰ alékʰ apaaree aapé alakʰ lakʰaa▫iḋaa. ||3|| In the Tenth Gate, the Primal Lord, the unknowable and infinite dwells; the unseen Lord reveals Himself. ||3|| ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਇਕ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ पउण पाणी अगनी इक वासा ॥ Pa▫uṇ paaṇee agnee ik vaasaa. Within the body of air, water and fire, the One Lord dwells. ਆਪੇ ਕੀਤੋ ਖੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥ आपे कीतो खेलु तमासा ॥ Aapé keeṫo kʰél ṫamaasaa. He Himself stages His wondrous dramas and plays. ਬਲਦੀ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ बलदी जलि निवरै किरपा ते आपे जल निधि पाइदा ॥४॥ Balḋee jal nivræ kirpaa ṫé aapé jal niḋʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||4|| By His Grace, water puts out the burning fire; He Himself stores it up in the watery ocean. ||4|| ਧਰਤਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਧਰੀ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲਾ ॥ धरति उपाइ धरी धरम साला ॥ Ḋʰaraṫ upaa▫é ḋʰaree ḋʰaram saalaa. Creating the earth, He established it as the home of Dharma. ਉਤਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ उतपति परलउ आपि निराला ॥ Uṫpaṫ parla▫o aap niraalaa. Creating and destroying, He remains unattached. ਪਵਣੈ ਖੇਲੁ ਕੀਆ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ਕਲਾ ਖਿੰਚਿ ਢਾਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ पवणै खेलु कीआ सभ थाई कला खिंचि ढाहाइदा ॥५॥ Pavṇæ kʰél kee▫aa sabʰ ṫʰaa▫ee kalaa kʰinch dʰaahaa▫iḋaa. ||5|| He stages the play of the breath everywhere. Withdrawing His power, He lets the beings crumble. ||5|| ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮਾਲਣਿ ਤੇਰੀ ॥ भार अठारह मालणि तेरी ॥ Bʰaar atʰaarah maalaṇ ṫéree. Your gardener is the vast vegetation of nature. ਚਉਰੁ ਢੁਲੈ ਪਵਣੈ ਲੈ ਫੇਰੀ ॥ चउरु ढुलै पवणै लै फेरी ॥ Cha▫ur dʰulæ pavṇæ læ féree. The wind blowing around is the Chauree, the fly-brush, waving over You. ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਦੀਪਕ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ चंदु सूरजु दुइ दीपक राखे ससि घरि सूरु समाइदा ॥६॥ Chanḋ sooraj ḋu▫é ḋeepak raakʰé sas gʰar soor samaa▫iḋaa. ||6|| The Lord placed the two lamps, the sun and the moon; the sun merges in the house of the moon. ||6|| ਸਫਲਿਓ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ सफलिओ बिरखु अमृत फलु पावहि ॥ Safli▫o birakʰ amriṫ fal paavahi. The tree of life is fruitful, bearing the fruit of Ambrosial Nectar. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ गुरमुखि सहजि रवै गुण गावै हरि रसु चोग चुगाइदा ॥७॥ Gurmukʰ sahj ravæ guṇ gaavæ har ras chog chugaa▫iḋaa. ||7|| The Gurmukh intuitively sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he eats the food of the Lord’s sublime essence. ||7|| ਪੰਖੀ ਪੰਚ ਉਡਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ पंखी पंच उडरि नही धावहि ॥ Pankʰee panch udar nahee ḋʰaavėh. The five birds do not fly wild. ਝਿਲਮਿਲਿ ਝਿਲਕੈ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਤਾਰਾ ॥ झिलमिलि झिलकै चंदु न तारा ॥ Jʰilmil jʰilkæ chanḋ na ṫaaraa. The dazzling light glitters, although neither the moon nor the stars are shining; ਸੂਰਜ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਨ ਬਿਜੁਲਿ ਗੈਣਾਰਾ ॥ सूरज किरणि न बिजुलि गैणारा ॥ Sooraj kiraṇ na bijul gʰæṇaaraa. neither the sun’s rays nor the lightning flashes across the sky. ਅਕਥੀ ਕਥਉ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ अकथी कथउ चिहनु नही कोई पूरि रहिआ मनि भाइदा ॥८॥ Akṫʰee kaṫʰa▫o chihan nahee ko▫ee poor rahi▫aa man bʰaa▫iḋaa. ||8|| I describe the indescribable state, which has no sign, where the all-pervading Lord is still pleasing to the mind. ||8|| ਪਸਰੀ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਉਜਿਆਲਾ ॥ पसरी किरणि जोति उजिआला ॥ Pasree kiraṇ joṫ uji▫aalaa. The rays of Divine Light have spread out their brilliant radiance. ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ करि करि देखै आपि दइआला ॥ Kar kar ḋékʰæ aap ḋa▫i▫aalaa. Having created the creation, the Merciful Lord Himself gazes upon it. ਅਨਹਦ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ अनहद रुण झुणकारु सदा धुनि निरभउ कै घरि वाइदा ॥९॥ Anhaḋ ruṇ jʰuṇkaar saḋaa ḋʰun nirbʰa▫o kæ gʰar vaa▫iḋaa. ||9|| The sweet, melodious, unstruck sound current vibrates continuously in the home of the fearless Lord. ||9|| ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਤੂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ सभ तेरी तू गुरमुखि जाता दरि सोहै गुण गाइदा ॥१०॥ Sabʰ ṫéree ṫoo gurmukʰ jaaṫaa ḋar sohæ guṇ gaa▫iḋaa. ||10|| All belong to You; to the Gurmukhs, You are known. Singing Your Praises, they look beautiful in Your Court. ||10|| ਸਗਲ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਛਾਜੈ ॥ सगल बिआपि रहिआ प्रभु छाजै ॥ Sagal bi▫aap rahi▫aa parabʰ chʰaajæ. God is all-pervading, giving shade to all. ਅਨਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਜੈ ॥ अनहदु वाजै भ्रमु भउ भाजै ॥ Anhaḋ vaajæ bʰaram bʰa▫o bʰaajæ. When the unstruck sound current resounds, doubt and fear run away. ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ आदि निरंजनु निरमलु सोई ॥ Aaḋ niranjan nirmal so▫ee. He is the Primal Lord, immaculate and pure. ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ॥ अवरु न जाणा दूजा कोई ॥ Avar na jaaṇaa ḋoojaa ko▫ee. I know of no other at all. ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਗਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ एकंकारु वसै मनि भावै हउमै गरबु गवाइदा ॥११॥ Ékankaar vasæ man bʰaavæ ha▫umæ garab gavaa▫iḋaa. ||11|| The One Universal Creator Lord dwells within, and is pleasing to the mind of those who banish egotism and pride. ||11|| ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥ अमृतु पीआ सतिगुरि दीआ ॥ Amriṫ pee▫aa saṫgur ḋee▫aa. I drink the Ambrosial Nectar, given by the True Guru. ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਦੂਆ ਤੀਆ ॥ अवरु न जाणा दूआ तीआ ॥ Avar na jaaṇaa ḋoo▫aa ṫee▫aa. I do not know any other second or third. ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਸੁ ਅਪਰ ਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਪਰਖਿ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ एको एकु सु अपर पर्मपरु परखि खजानै पाइदा ॥१२॥ Éko ék so apar parampar parakʰ kʰajaanæ paa▫iḋaa. ||12|| He is the One, Unique, Infinite and Endless Lord; He evaluates all beings and places some in His treasury. ||12|| ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥ गिआनु धिआनु सचु गहिर ग्मभीरा ॥ Gi▫aan ḋʰi▫aan sach gahir gambʰeeraa. Spiritual wisdom and meditation on the True Lord are deep and profound. ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚੀਰਾ ॥ कोइ न जाणै तेरा चीरा ॥ Ko▫é na jaaṇæ ṫéraa cheeraa. No one knows Your expanse. ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੈ ॥ करमु धरमु सचु हाथि तुमारै ॥ Karam ḋʰaram sach haaṫʰ ṫumaaræ. You hold karma and Dharma in Your hands, O True Lord. ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ जेती है तेती तुधु जाचै करमि मिलै सो पाइदा ॥१३॥ Jéṫee hæ ṫéṫee ṫuḋʰ jaachæ karam milæ so paa▫iḋaa. ||13|| All that are, beg from You; You are attained only by Your Grace. ||13|| ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਅਖੁਟ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ॥ वेपरवाह अखुट भंडारै ॥ véparvaah akʰut bʰandaaræ. O Independent Lord, Your treasures are inexhaustible. ਤੂ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ तू दइआलु किरपालु सदा प्रभु आपे मेलि मिलाइदा ॥१४॥ Ṫoo ḋa▫i▫aal kirpaal saḋaa parabʰ aapé mél milaa▫iḋaa. ||14|| You are forever kind and compassionate, God. You unite in Your Union. ||14|| ਆਪੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਆਪੇ ॥ आपे देखि दिखावै आपे ॥ Aapé ḋékʰ ḋikʰaavæ aapé. You Yourself see, and cause Yourself to be seen. ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥ आपे थापि उथापे आपे ॥ Aapé ṫʰaap uṫʰaapé aapé. You Yourself establish, and You Yourself disestablish. ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ आपे जोड़ि विछोड़े करता आपे मारि जीवाइदा ॥१५॥ Aapé joṛ vichʰoṛé karṫaa aapé maar jeevaa▫iḋaa. ||15|| The Creator Himself unites and separates; He Himself kills and rejuvenates. ||15|| ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥ जेती है तेती तुधु अंदरि ॥ Jéṫee hæ ṫéṫee ṫuḋʰ anḋar. As much as there is, is contained within You. ਦੇਖਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰਿ ॥ देखहि आपि बैसि बिज मंदरि ॥ Ḋékʰėh aap bæs bij manḋar. You gaze upon Your creation, sitting within Your royal palace. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੩॥ नानकु साचु कहै बेनंती हरि दरसनि सुखु पाइदा ॥१६॥१॥१३॥ Naanak saach kahæ bénanṫee har ḋarsan sukʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||16||1||13|| Nanak offers this true prayer; gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Lord’s Darshan, I have found peace. ||16||1||13||
