ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੇ ॥ साचे साहिब सिरजणहारे ॥ Saaché saahib sirjaṇhaaré. The True Lord is the Creator of the Universe. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਧਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ जिनि धर चक्र धरे वीचारे ॥ Jin ḋʰar chakar ḋʰaré veechaaré. He established the worldly sphere and He contemplates it. ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ आपे करता करि करि वेखै साचा वेपरवाहा हे ॥१॥ Aapé karṫaa kar kar vékʰæ saachaa véparvaahaa hé. ||1|| He Himself created the creation, and beholds it; He is True and independent. ||1|| ਦੁਇ ਪੰਦੀ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਚਲਾਏ ॥ दुइ पंदी दुइ राह चलाए ॥ Ḋu▫é panḋee ḋu▫é raah chalaa▫é. The two travelers have set out in two directions. ਵੇਕੀ ਵੇਕੀ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਏ ॥ वेकी वेकी जंत उपाए ॥ vékee vékee janṫ upaa▫é. He created beings of different kinds. ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ गुर पूरे विणु मुकति न होई सचु नामु जपि लाहा हे ॥२॥ Gur pooré viṇ mukaṫ na ho▫ee sach naam jap laahaa hé. ||2|| Without the Perfect Guru, no one is liberated. Chanting the True Name, one profits. ||2|| ਪੜਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਰੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਾ ॥ पड़हि मनमुख परु बिधि नही जाना ॥ Paṛėh manmukʰ par biḋʰ nahee jaanaa. The self-willed Manmukhs read and study, but they do not know the way. ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥ नामु न बूझहि भरमि भुलाना ॥ Naam na boojʰėh bʰaram bʰulaanaa. They do not understand the Naam, the Name of the Lord; they wander, deluded by doubt. ਲੈ ਕੈ ਵਢੀ ਦੇਨਿ ਉਗਾਹੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ लै कै वढी देनि उगाही दुरमति का गलि फाहा हे ॥३॥ Læ kæ vadʰee ḋén ugaahee ḋurmaṫ kaa gal faahaa hé. ||3|| They take bribes, and give false testimony; the noose of evil-mindedness is around their necks. ||3|| ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥ सिम्रिति सासत्र पड़हि पुराणा ॥ Simriṫ saasṫar paṛėh puraaṇaa. They read the Smritis, the Shastras and the Puranas; ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ वादु वखाणहि ततु न जाणा ॥ vaaḋ vakaaṇėh ṫaṫ na jaaṇaa. they argue and debate, but do not know the essence of reality. ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ विणु गुर पूरे ततु न पाईऐ सच सूचे सचु राहा हे ॥४॥ viṇ gur pooré ṫaṫ na paa▫ee▫æ sach sooché sach raahaa hé. ||4|| Without the Perfect Guru, the essence of reality is not obtained. The true and pure beings walk the Path of Truth. ||4|| ਸਭ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖੈ ॥ सभ सालाहे सुणि सुणि आखै ॥ Sabʰ saalaahé suṇ suṇ aakʰæ. All praise God and listen, and listen and speak. ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਾਖੈ ॥ आपे दाना सचु पराखै ॥ Aapé ḋaanaa sach paraakʰæ. He Himself is wise, and He Himself judges the Truth. ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ जिन कउ नदरि करे प्रभु अपनी गुरमुखि सबदु सलाहा हे ॥५॥ Jin ka▫o naḋar karé parabʰ apnee gurmukʰ sabaḋ salaahaa hé. ||5|| Those whom God blesses with His Glance of Grace become Gurmukh, and praise the Word of the Shabad. ||5|| ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖੈ ਕੇਤੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ सुणि सुणि आखै केती बाणी ॥ Suṇ suṇ aakʰæ kéṫee baṇee. Many listen and listen, and speak the Guru’s Bani. ਸੁਣਿ ਕਹੀਐ ਕੋ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ सुणि कहीऐ को अंतु न जाणी ॥ Suṇ kahee▫æ ko anṫ na jaaṇee. Listening and speaking, no one knows His limits. ਸੋਹਿਲੜੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਗਾਏ ॥ सोहिलड़े अगिआनी गाए ॥ Sohilṛé agi▫aanee gaa▫é. the ignorant sing songs of joy. ਜਾ ਕਉ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਬੁਧਿ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ जा कउ अलखु लखाए आपे अकथ कथा बुधि ताहा हे ॥६॥ Jaa ka▫o alakʰ lakʰaa▫é aapé akaṫʰ kaṫʰaa buḋʰ ṫaahaa hé. ||6|| He alone is wise, unto whom the unseen Lord reveals Himself; he speaks the Unspoken Speech. ||6|| ਜਨਮੇ ਕਉ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਧਾਏ ॥ जनमे कउ वाजहि वाधाए ॥ Janmé ka▫o vaajėh vaaḋʰaa▫é. At birth, the congratulations pour in; ਜੋ ਜਨਮੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ जो जनमै तिसु सरपर मरणा किरतु पइआ सिरि साहा हे ॥७॥ Jo janmæ ṫis sarpar marṇaa kiraṫ pa▫i▫aa sir saahaa hé. ||7|| Whoever is born, is sure to die, according to the destiny of past deeds inscribed upon his head by the Sovereign Lord King. ||7|| ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਏ ॥ संजोगु विजोगु मेरै प्रभि कीए ॥ Sanjog vijog méræ parabʰ kee▫é. Union and separation were created by my God. ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਦੁਖਾ ਸੁਖ ਦੀਏ ॥ स्रिसटि उपाइ दुखा सुख दीए ॥ Sarisat upaa▫é ḋukʰaa sukʰ ḋee▫é. Creating the Universe, He gave it pain and pleasure. ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਸਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ दुख सुख ही ते भए निराले गुरमुखि सीलु सनाहा हे ॥८॥ Ḋukʰ sukʰ hee ṫé bʰa▫é niraalé gurmukʰ seel sanaahaa hé. ||8|| The Gurmukhs remain unaffected by pain and pleasure; they wear the armor of humility. ||8|| ਨੀਕੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥ नीके साचे के वापारी ॥ Neeké saaché ké vaapaaree. The noble people are traders in Truth. ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ सचु सउदा लै गुर वीचारी ॥ Sach sa▫uḋaa læ gur veechaaree. They purchase the true merchandise, contemplating the Guru. ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ सचा वखरु जिसु धनु पलै सबदि सचै ओमाहा हे ॥९॥ Sachaa vakʰar jis ḋʰan palæ sabaḋ sachæ omaahaa hé. ||9|| One who has the wealth of the true commodity in his lap, is blessed with the rapture of the True Shabad. ||9|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ गुरमुखि वणजु करे प्रभ भावै ॥ Gurmukʰ vaṇaj karé parabʰ bʰaavæ. The trades of the Gurmukh are pleasing to God. ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ पूंजी साबतु रासि सलामति चूका जम का फाहा हे ॥१०॥ Poonjee saabaṫ raas salaamaṫ chookaa jam kaa faahaa hé. ||10|| His stock is safe, and his capital is safe and sound. The noose of Death is cut away from around his neck. ||10|| ਕਾਚੀ ਸਉਦੀ ਤੋਟਾ ਆਵੈ ॥ काची सउदी तोटा आवै ॥ Kaachee sa▫uḋee ṫotaa aavæ. The false dealings lead only to loss. ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਆਪਣ ਭਾਣੈ ॥ सभु को बोलै आपण भाणै ॥ Sabʰ ko bolæ aapaṇ bʰaaṇæ. Everyone speaks as they please. ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ मनमुखु दूजै बोलि न जाणै ॥ Manmukʰ ḋoojæ bol na jaaṇæ. The self-willed Manmukh, in duality, does not know how to speak. ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਅੰਧਲੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ अंधुले की मति अंधली बोली आइ गइआ दुखु ताहा हे ॥११॥ Anḋʰulé kee maṫ anḋʰlee bolee aa▫é ga▫i▫aa ḋukʰ ṫaahaa hé. ||11|| The blind person has a blind and deaf intellect; coming and going in reincarnation, he suffers in pain. ||11|| ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਮਰਣਾ ॥ दुख महि जनमै दुख महि मरणा ॥ Ḋukʰ mėh janmæ ḋukʰ mėh marṇaa. In pain he is born, and in pain he dies. ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥ दूखु न मिटै बिनु गुर की सरणा ॥ Ḋookʰ na mitæ bin gur kee sarṇaa. His pain is not relieved, without seeking the Sanctuary of the Guru. ਦੂਖੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਦੂਖੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ दूखी उपजै दूखी बिनसै किआ लै आइआ किआ लै जाहा हे ॥१२॥ Ḋookʰee upjæ ḋookʰee binsæ ki▫aa læ aa▫i▫aa ki▫aa læ jaahaa hé. ||12|| In pain he is created, and in pain he perishes. What has he brought with himself? And what will he take away? ||12|| ਸਚੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥ सची करणी गुर की सिरकारा ॥ Sachee karṇee gur kee sirkaaraa. True are the actions of those who are under the Guru’s influence. ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਮ ਧਾਰਾ ॥ आवणु जाणु नही जम धारा ॥ Aavaṇ jaaṇ nahee jam ḋʰaaraa. They do not come and go in reincarnation, and they are not subject to the laws of Death. ਡਾਲ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਤੁ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ डाल छोडि ततु मूलु पराता मनि साचा ओमाहा हे ॥१३॥ Daal chʰod ṫaṫ mool paraaṫaa man saachaa omaahaa hé. ||13|| Whoever abandons the branches, and clings to the true root, enjoys true ecstasy within his mind. ||13|| ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਨਹੀ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥ हरि के लोग नही जमु मारै ॥ Har ké log nahee jam maaræ. Death cannot strike down the people of the Lord. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ राम नामु घट अंतरि पूजा अवरु न दूजा काहा हे ॥१४॥ Raam naam gʰat anṫar poojaa avar na ḋoojaa kaahaa hé. ||14|| Deep within the nucleus of their hearts, they worship and adore the Lord’s Name; there is nothing else at all for them. ||14|| ਨਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਪੰਥਿ ਕਰਾਰੈ ॥ ना दुखु देखहि पंथि करारै ॥ Naa ḋukʰ ḋékʰėh panṫʰ karaaræ. They do not see pain on the most difficult path. ਓੜੁ ਨ ਕਥਨੈ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਜਾਈ ॥ ओड़ु न कथनै सिफति सजाई ॥ Oṛ na kaṫʰnæ sifaṫ sajaa▫ee. There is no end to the Lord’s sermon and Praise. ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥ जिउ तुधु भावहि रहहि रजाई ॥ Ji▫o ṫuḋʰ bʰaavėh rahėh rajaa▫ee. As it pleases You, I remain under Your Will. ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਜਾਨਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਚੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ दरगह पैधे जानि सुहेले हुकमि सचे पातिसाहा हे ॥१५॥ Ḋargėh pæḋʰé jaan suhélé hukam saché paaṫisaahaa hé. ||15|| I am embellished with robes of honor in the Court of the Lord, by the Order of the True King. ||15|| ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਗੁਣ ਕਥਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥ किआ कहीऐ गुण कथहि घनेरे ॥ Ki▫aa kahee▫æ guṇ kaṫʰėh gʰanéré. How can I chant Your uncounted glories? ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥ अंतु न पावहि वडे वडेरे ॥ Anṫ na paavahi vadé vadéré. Even the greatest of the great do not know Your limits. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥੧੨॥ नानक साचु मिलै पति राखहु तू सिरि साहा पातिसाहा हे ॥१६॥६॥१२॥ Naanak saach milæ paṫ raakʰo ṫoo sir saahaa paaṫisaahaa hé. ||16||6||12|| Please bless Nanak with the Truth, and preserve his honor; You are the supreme emperor above the heads of kings. ||16||6||12||
