ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥ सरणि परे गुरदेव तुमारी ॥ Saraṇ paré gurḋév ṫumaaree. O Divine Guru, I have entered Your Sanctuary. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ਤੂ ਪੂਰਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ तेरे चोज न जाणै कोई तू पूरा पुरखु बिधाता हे ॥१॥ Ṫéré choj na jaaṇæ ko▫ee ṫoo pooraa purakʰ biḋʰaaṫaa hé. ||1|| No one knows Your wondrous plays; You are the perfect Architect of Destiny. ||1|| ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥ तू समरथु दइआलु मुरारी ॥ Ṫoo samraṫʰ ḋa▫i▫aal muraaree. You are the Almighty Lord, the Merciful Lord. ਤੂ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ तू आदि जुगादि करहि प्रतिपाला ॥ Ṫoo aaḋ jugaaḋ karahi parṫipaalaa. From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You cherish and sustain Your beings. ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ घटि घटि रूपु अनूपु दइआला ॥ Gʰat gʰat roop anoop ḋa▫i▫aalaa. You are in each and every heart, O Merciful Lord of incomparable beauty. ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ जिउ तुधु भावै तिवै चलावहि सभु तेरो कीआ कमाता हे ॥२॥ Ji▫o ṫuḋʰ bʰaavæ ṫivæ chalaavėh sabʰ ṫéro kee▫aa kamaaṫaa hé. ||2|| As You will, You cause all to walk; everyone acts according to Your Command. ||2|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਭਲੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ॥ अंतरि जोति भली जगजीवन ॥ Anṫar joṫ bʰalee jagjeevan. Deep within the nucleus of all, is the Light of the Life of the World. ਸਭਿ ਘਟ ਭੋਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਨ ॥ सभि घट भोगै हरि रसु पीवन ॥ Sabʰ gʰat bʰogæ har ras peevan. The Lord enjoys the hearts of all, and drinks in their essence. ਆਪੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ आपे लेवै आपे देवै तिहु लोई जगत पित दाता हे ॥३॥ Aapé lévæ aapé ḋévæ ṫihu lo▫ee jagaṫ piṫ ḋaaṫaa hé. ||3|| He Himself gives, and He himself takes; He is the generous father of the beings of the three worlds. ||3|| ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥ जगतु उपाइ खेलु रचाइआ ॥ Jagaṫ upaa▫é kʰél rachaa▫i▫aa. Creating the world, He has set His play into motion. ਪਵਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ पवणै पाणी अगनी जीउ पाइआ ॥ Pavṇæ paaṇee agnee jee▫o paa▫i▫aa. He placed the soul in the body of air, water and fire. ਦੇਹੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਸੋ ਦਸਵਾ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਰਹਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ देही नगरी नउ दरवाजे सो दसवा गुपतु रहाता हे ॥४॥ Ḋéhee nagree na▫o ḋarvaajé so ḋasvaa gupaṫ rahaaṫaa hé. ||4|| The body-village has nine gates; the Tenth Gate remains hidden. ||4|| ਚਾਰਿ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਅਸਰਾਲਾ ॥ चारि नदी अगनी असराला ॥ Chaar naḋee agnee asraalaa. There are four horrible rivers of fire. ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ कोई गुरमुखि बूझै सबदि निराला ॥ Ko▫ee gurmukʰ boojʰæ sabaḋ niraalaa. How rare is that Gurmukh who understands this, and through the Word of the Shabad, remains unattached. ਸਾਕਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਦਾਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ साकत दुरमति डूबहि दाझहि गुरि राखे हरि लिव राता हे ॥५॥ Saakaṫ ḋurmaṫ doobėh ḋaajʰėh gur raakʰé har liv raaṫaa hé. ||5|| The faithless cynics are drowned and burnt through their evil-mindedness. The Guru saves those who are imbued with the Love of the Lord. ||5|| ਅਪੁ ਤੇਜੁ ਵਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਆਕਾਸਾ ॥ अपु तेजु वाइ प्रिथमी आकासा ॥ Ap ṫéj vaa▫é pariṫʰmee aakaasaa. Water, fire, air, earth and ether - ਤਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ तिन महि पंच ततु घरि वासा ॥ Ṫin mėh panch ṫaṫ gʰar vaasaa. in that house of the five elements, they dwell. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ सतिगुर सबदि रहहि रंगि राता तजि माइआ हउमै भ्राता हे ॥६॥ Saṫgur sabaḋ rahėh rang raaṫaa ṫaj maa▫i▫aa ha▫umæ bʰaraaṫaa hé. ||6|| Those who remain imbued with the Word of the True Guru’s Shabad, renounce Maya, egotism and doubt. ||6|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਮੁਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਇਨਿ ਸਾਕਤਿ ਦੂਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ अंतरि चोरु मुहै घरु मंदरु इनि साकति दूतु न जाता हे ॥७॥ Anṫar chor muhæ gʰar manḋar in saakaṫ ḋooṫ na jaaṫaa hé. ||7|| The temple of the body is being plundered by the thieves within, but this faithless cynic does not even recognize these demons. ||7|| ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ॥ इहु मनु भीजै सबदि पतीजै ॥ Ih man bʰeejæ sabaḋ paṫeejæ. This mind is drenched with the Shabad, and satisfied. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕੀਜੈ ॥ बिनु नावै किआ टेक टिकीजै ॥ Bin naavæ ki▫aa ték tikeejæ. Without the Name, what support can anyone have? ਦੁੰਦਰ ਦੂਤ ਭੂਤ ਭੀਹਾਲੇ ॥ दुंदर दूत भूत भीहाले ॥ Ḋunḋar ḋooṫ bʰooṫ bʰeehaalé. They are argumentative demons, terrifying goblins. ਖਿੰਚੋਤਾਣਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥ खिंचोताणि करहि बेताले ॥ Kʰinchoṫaaṇ karahi béṫaalé. These demons stir up conflict and strife. ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ सबद सुरति बिनु आवै जावै पति खोई आवत जाता हे ॥८॥ Sabaḋ suraṫ bin aavæ jaavæ paṫ kʰo▫ee aavaṫ jaaṫaa hé. ||8|| Without awareness of the Shabad, one comes and goes in reincarnation; he loses his honor in this coming and going. ||8|| ਕੂੜੁ ਕਲਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥ कूड़ु कलरु तनु भसमै ढेरी ॥ Kooṛ kalar ṫan bʰasmæ dʰéree. The body of the false person is just a pile of barren dirt. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈਸੀ ਪਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ॥ बिनु नावै कैसी पति तेरी ॥ Bin naavæ kæsee paṫ ṫéree. Without the Name, what honor can you have? ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਮਕੰਕਰਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ बाधे मुकति नाही जुग चारे जमकंकरि कालि पराता हे ॥९॥ Baaḋʰé mukaṫ naahee jug chaaré jamkankar kaal paraaṫaa hé. ||9|| Bound and gagged throughout the four ages, there is no liberation; the Messenger of Death keeps such a person under his gaze. ||9|| ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਸਜਾਈ ॥ जम दरि बाधे मिलहि सजाई ॥ Jam ḋar baaḋʰé milėh sajaa▫ee. At Death’s door, he is tied up and punished; ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਮੀਨੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ करण पलाव करे बिललावै जिउ कुंडी मीनु पराता हे ॥१०॥ Karaṇ palaav karé billaavæ ji▫o kundee meen paraaṫaa hé. ||10|| He cries out in pain, like the fish pierced by the hook. ||10|| ਤਿਸੁ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਈ ॥ तिसु अपराधी गति नही काई ॥ Ṫis apraaḋʰee gaṫ nahee kaa▫ee. such a sinner does not obtain salvation. ਸਾਕਤੁ ਫਾਸੀ ਪੜੈ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥ साकतु फासी पड़ै इकेला ॥ Saakaṫ faasee paṛæ ikélaa. The faithless cynic is caught in the noose all alone. ਜਮ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥ जम वसि कीआ अंधु दुहेला ॥ Jam vas kee▫aa anḋʰ ḋuhélaa. The miserable spiritually blind person is caught in the power of Death. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਚਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ राम नाम बिनु मुकति न सूझै आजु कालि पचि जाता हे ॥११॥ Raam naam bin mukaṫ na soojʰæ aaj kaal pach jaaṫaa hé. ||11|| Without the Lord’s Name, liberation is not known. He shall waste away, today or tomorrow. ||11|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਬੇਲੀ ਕੋਈ ॥ सतिगुर बाझु न बेली कोई ॥ Saṫgur baajʰ na bélee ko▫ee. Other than the True Guru, no one is your friend. ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਰਾਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ ऐथै ओथै राखा प्रभु सोई ॥ Æṫʰæ oṫʰæ raakʰaa parabʰ so▫ee. Here and hereafter, God is the Savior. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਇਉ ਸਲਲੈ ਸਲਲ ਮਿਲਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ राम नामु देवै करि किरपा इउ सललै सलल मिलाता हे ॥१२॥ Raam naam ḋévæ kar kirpaa i▫o sallæ salal milaaṫaa hé. ||12|| He grants His Grace, and bestows the Lord’s Name. He merges with Him, like water with water. ||12|| ਭੂਲੇ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥ भूले सिख गुरू समझाए ॥ Bʰoolé sikʰ guroo samjʰaa▫é. The Guru instructs His wandering Sikhs; ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਦੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ उझड़ि जादे मारगि पाए ॥ Ujʰaṛ jaaḋé maarag paa▫é. if they go astray, He sets them on the right path. ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਖਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ तिसु गुर सेवि सदा दिनु राती दुख भंजन संगि सखाता हे ॥१३॥ Ṫis gur sév saḋaa ḋin raaṫee ḋukʰ bʰanjan sang sakʰaaṫaa hé. ||13|| So, serve the Guru, forever, day and night; He is the Destroyer of pain - He is with you as your companion. ||13|| ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿ ਮਹੇਸਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ ब्रहमै इंद्रि महेसि न जाणी ॥ Barahmæ in▫ḋar mahés na jaaṇee. Even Brahma, Indra and Shiva do not know it. ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥ गुर की भगति करहि किआ प्राणी ॥ Gur kee bʰagaṫ karahi ki▫aa paraaṇee. O mortal being, what devotional worship have you performed to the Guru? ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ सतिगुरु अलखु कहहु किउ लखीऐ जिसु बखसे तिसहि पछाता हे ॥१४॥ Saṫgur alakʰ kahhu ki▫o lakʰee▫æ jis bakʰsé ṫisėh pachʰaaṫaa hé. ||14|| Tell me, how can the unknowable True Guru be known? He alone attains this realization, whom the Lord forgives. ||14|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ॥ अंतरि प्रेमु परापति दरसनु ॥ Anṫar parém paraapaṫ ḋarsan. One who has love within, obtains the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਰਸਨੁ ॥ गुरबाणी सिउ प्रीति सु परसनु ॥ Gurbaaṇee si▫o pareeṫ so parsan. One who enshrines love for the Word of the Guru’s Bani, meets with Him. ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ अहिनिसि निरमल जोति सबाई घटि दीपकु गुरमुखि जाता हे ॥१५॥ Ahinis nirmal joṫ sabaa▫ee gʰat ḋeepak gurmukʰ jaaṫaa hé. ||15|| Day and night, the Gurmukh sees the immaculate Divine Light everywhere; this lamp illuminates his heart. ||15|| ਭੋਜਨ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥ भोजन गिआनु महा रसु मीठा ॥ Bʰojan gi▫aan mahaa ras meetʰaa. The food of spiritual wisdom is the supremely sweet essence. ਜਿਨਿ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਡੀਠਾ ॥ जिनि चाखिआ तिनि दरसनु डीठा ॥ Jin chaakʰi▫aa ṫin ḋarsan deetʰaa. Whoever tastes it, sees the Blessed Vision of the Lord’s Darshan. ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥ दरसनु देखि मिले बैरागी मनु मनसा मारि समाता हे ॥१६॥ Ḋarsan ḋékʰ milé bæraagee man mansaa maar samaaṫaa hé. ||16|| Beholding His Darshan, the unattached one meets the Lord; subduing the mind’s desires, he merges into the Lord. ||16|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥ सतिगुरु सेवहि से परधाना ॥ Saṫgur sévėh sé parḋʰaanaa. Those who serve the True Guru are supreme and famous. ਤਿਨ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥ तिन घट घट अंतरि ब्रहमु पछाना ॥ Ṫin gʰat gʰat anṫar barahm pachʰaanaa. Deep within each and every heart, they recognize God. ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੫॥੧੧॥ नानक हरि जसु हरि जन की संगति दीजै जिन सतिगुरु हरि प्रभु जाता हे ॥१७॥५॥११॥ Naanak har jas har jan kee sangaṫ ḋeejæ jin saṫgur har parabʰ jaaṫaa hé. ||17||5||11|| Please bless Nanak with the Lord’s Praises, and the Sangat, the Congregation of the Lord’s humble servants; through the True Guru, they know their Lord God. ||17||5||11||
