ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥ आपे करता पुरखु बिधाता ॥ Aapé karṫaa purakʰ biḋʰaaṫaa. He Himself is the Creator Lord, the Architect of Destiny. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ आपे सतिगुरु आपे सेवकु आपे स्रिसटि उपाई हे ॥१॥ Aapé saṫgur aapé sévak aapé sarisat upaa▫ee hé. ||1|| He Himself is the True Guru, and He Himself is the servant; He Himself created the Universe. ||1|| ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ जिनि आपे आपि उपाइ पछाता ॥ Jin aapé aap upaa▫é pachʰaaṫaa. He evaluates those whom He Himself has created. ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਰੇ ॥ आपे नेड़ै नाही दूरे ॥ Aapé néṛæ naahee ḋooré. He is near at hand, not far away. ਬੂਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ॥ बूझहि गुरमुखि से जन पूरे ॥ Boojʰėh gurmukʰ sé jan pooré. The Gurmukhs understand Him; perfect are those humble beings. ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਏਹ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ तिन की संगति अहिनिसि लाहा गुर संगति एह वडाई हे ॥२॥ Ṫin kee sangaṫ ahinis laahaa gur sangaṫ éh vadaa▫ee hé. ||2|| Associating with them night and day is profitable. This is the glorious greatness of associating with the Guru. ||2|| ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥ जुगि जुगि संत भले प्रभ तेरे ॥ Jug jug sanṫ bʰalé parabʰ ṫéré. Throughout the ages, Your Saints are holy and sublime, O God. ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸੇਰੇ ॥ हरि गुण गावहि रसन रसेरे ॥ Har guṇ gaavahi rasan raséré. They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, savoring it with their tongues. ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ उसतति करहि परहरि दुखु दालदु जिन नाही चिंत पराई हे ॥३॥ Usṫaṫ karahi par▫har ḋukʰ ḋaalaḋ jin naahee chinṫ paraa▫ee hé. ||3|| They chant His Praises, and their pain and poverty are taken away; they are not afraid of anyone else. ||3|| ਓਇ ਜਾਗਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤੇ ਦੀਸਹਿ ॥ ओइ जागत रहहि न सूते दीसहि ॥ O▫é jaagaṫ rahėh na sooṫé ḋeesėh. They remain awake and aware, and do not appear to sleep. ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਸਹਿ ॥ संगति कुल तारे साचु परीसहि ॥ Sangaṫ kul ṫaaré saach pareesėh. They serve up Truth, and so save their companions and relatives. ਕਲਿਮਲ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਓਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ कलिमल मैलु नाही ते निरमल ओइ रहहि भगति लिव लाई हे ॥४॥ Kalimal mæl naahee ṫé nirmal o▫é rahėh bʰagaṫ liv laa▫ee hé. ||4|| They are not stained with the filth of sins; they are immaculate and pure, and remain absorbed in loving devotional worship. ||4|| ਬੂਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ बूझहु हरि जन सतिगुर बाणी ॥ Boojʰhu har jan saṫgur baṇee. O humble servants of the Lord, understand the Word of the Guru’s Bani. ਏਹੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ॥ एहु जोबनु सासु है देह पुराणी ॥ Éhu joban saas hæ ḋéh puraaṇee. This youth, breath and body shall pass away. ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ आजु कालि मरि जाईऐ प्राणी हरि जपु जपि रिदै धिआई हे ॥५॥ Aaj kaal mar jaa▫ee▫æ paraaṇee har jap jap riḋæ ḋʰi▫aa▫ee hé. ||5|| O mortal, you shall die today or tomorrow; chant, and meditate on the Lord within your heart. ||5|| ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਉਛਾਹਾੜਾ ॥ कूड़ु मारे कालु उछाहाड़ा ॥ Kooṛ maaré kaal uchʰaahaaṛaa. Death viciously kills the false beings. ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ साकत कूड़ि पचहि मनि हउमै दुहु मारगि पचै पचाई हे ॥६॥ Saakaṫ kooṛ pachėh man ha▫umæ ḋuhu maarag pachæ pachaa▫ee hé. ||6|| The faithless cynic is ruined through falsehood and his egotistical mind. On the path of duality, he rots away and decomposes. ||6|| ਛੋਡਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕੂੜ ਕਬਾੜਾ ॥ छोडहु प्राणी कूड़ कबाड़ा ॥ Chʰodahu paraaṇee kooṛ kabaaṛaa. O mortal, abandon falsehood and your worthless ways. ਛੋਡਿਹੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ॥ छोडिहु निंदा ताति पराई ॥ Chʰodihu ninḋaa ṫaaṫ paraa▫ee. Abandon slander and envy of others. ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥ पड़ि पड़ि दझहि साति न आई ॥ Paṛ paṛ ḋajʰėh saaṫ na aa▫ee. Reading and studying, they burn, and do not find tranquility. ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਹੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ मिलि सतसंगति नामु सलाहहु आतम रामु सखाई हे ॥७॥ Mil saṫsangaṫ naam salaahahu aaṫam raam sakʰaa▫ee hé. ||7|| Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord! The Lord, the Supreme Soul, shall be your helper and companion. ||7|| ਛੋਡਹੁ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥ छोडहु काम क्रोधु बुरिआई ॥ Chʰodahu kaam kroḋʰ buri▫aa▫ee. Abandon sexual desire, anger and wickedness. ਹਉਮੈ ਧੰਧੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਲੰਪਟਾਈ ॥ हउमै धंधु छोडहु ल्मपटाई ॥ Ha▫umæ ḋʰanḋʰ chʰodahu lamptaa▫ee. Abandon your involvement in egotistical affairs and conflicts. ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਤਾ ਉਬਰਹੁ ਇਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ सतिगुर सरणि परहु ता उबरहु इउ तरीऐ भवजलु भाई हे ॥८॥ Saṫgur saraṇ parahu ṫaa ubrahu i▫o ṫaree▫æ bʰavjal bʰaa▫ee hé. ||8|| If you seek the Sanctuary of the True Guru, then you shall be saved. In this way you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, O Siblings of Destiny. ||8|| ਆਗੈ ਬਿਮਲ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝੇਲਾ ॥ आगै बिमल नदी अगनि बिखु झेला ॥ Aagæ bimal naḋee agan bikʰ jʰélaa. In the hereafter, you shall have to cross over the fiery river of poisonous flames. ਤਿਥੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥ तिथै अवरु न कोई जीउ इकेला ॥ Ṫiṫʰæ avar na ko▫ee jee▫o ikélaa. No one else will be there; your soul shall be all alone. ਭੜ ਭੜ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੇ ਲਹਰੀ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ भड़ भड़ अगनि सागरु दे लहरी पड़ि दझहि मनमुख ताई हे ॥९॥ Bʰaṛ bʰaṛ agan saagar ḋé lahree paṛ ḋajʰėh manmukʰ ṫaa▫ee hé. ||9|| The ocean of fire spits out waves of searing flames; the self-willed Manmukhs fall into it, and are roasted there. ||9|| ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੈ ॥ गुर पहि मुकति दानु दे भाणै ॥ Gur pėh mukaṫ ḋaan ḋé bʰaaṇæ. Liberation comes from the Guru; He grants this blessing by the Pleasure of His Will. ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ जिनि पाइआ सोई बिधि जाणै ॥ Jin paa▫i▫aa so▫ee biḋʰ jaaṇæ. He alone knows the way, who obtains it. ਜਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ जिन पाइआ तिन पूछहु भाई सुखु सतिगुर सेव कमाई हे ॥१०॥ Jin paa▫i▫aa ṫin poochʰahu bʰaa▫ee sukʰ saṫgur sév kamaa▫ee hé. ||10|| So, ask one who has obtained it, O Siblings of Destiny. Serve the True Guru, and find peace. ||10|| ਜਮੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥ जमु सिरि मारे करे खुआरा ॥ Jam sir maaré karé kʰu▫aaraa. The Messenger of Death smashes his head and humiliates him. ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਬੇਕਾਰਾ ॥ गुर बिनु उरझि मरहि बेकारा ॥ Gur bin urajʰ marėh békaaraa. Without the Guru, he dies entangled in sin and corruption. ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਨਿੰਦ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ बाधे मुकति नाही नर निंदक डूबहि निंद पराई हे ॥११॥ Baaḋʰé mukaṫ naahee nar ninḋak doobėh ninḋ paraa▫ee hé. ||11|| The slanderous person is not freed of his bonds; he is drowned, slandering others. ||11|| ਬੋਲਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥ बोलहु साचु पछाणहु अंदरि ॥ Bolhu saach pachʰaaṇhu anḋar. So, speak the Truth, and realize the Lord deep within. ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਨੰਦਰਿ ॥ दूरि नाही देखहु करि नंदरि ॥ Ḋoor naahee ḋékʰhu kar nanḋar. He is not far away; look, and see Him. ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਇਉ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ बिघनु नाही गुरमुखि तरु तारी इउ भवजलु पारि लंघाई हे ॥१२॥ Bigʰan naahee gurmukʰ ṫar ṫaaree i▫o bʰavjal paar langʰaa▫ee hé. ||12|| No obstacles shall block your way; become Gurmukh, and cross over to the other side. This is the way to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||12|| ਦੇਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥ देही अंदरि नामु निवासी ॥ Ḋéhee anḋar naam nivaasee. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the body. ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥ आपे करता है अबिनासी ॥ Aapé karṫaa hæ abʰinaasee. The Creator Lord is eternal and imperishable. ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ ना जीउ मरै न मारिआ जाई करि देखै सबदि रजाई हे ॥१३॥ Naa jee▫o maræ na maari▫aa jaa▫ee kar ḋékʰæ sabaḋ rajaa▫ee hé. ||13|| The soul does not die, and it cannot be killed; God creates and watches over all. Through the Word of the Shabad, His Will is manifest. ||13|| ਓਹੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥ ओहु निरमलु है नाही अंधिआरा ॥ Oh nirmal hæ naahee anḋʰi▫aaraa. He is immaculate, and has no darkness. ਓਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥ ओहु आपे तखति बहै सचिआरा ॥ Oh aapé ṫakʰaṫ bahæ sachi▫aaraa. The True Lord Himself sits upon His throne. ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਆਈ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ साकत कूड़े बंधि भवाईअहि मरि जनमहि आई जाई हे ॥१४॥ Saakaṫ kooṛé banḋʰ bʰavaa▫ee▫ah mar janmėh aa▫ee jaa▫ee hé. ||14|| The faithless cynics are bound and gagged, and forced to wander in reincarnation. They die, and are reborn, and continue coming and going. ||14|| ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ गुर के सेवक सतिगुर पिआरे ॥ Gur ké sévak saṫgur pi▫aaré. The Guru’s servants are the Beloved of the True Guru. ਓਇ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ ओइ बैसहि तखति सु सबदु वीचारे ॥ O▫é bæsėh ṫakʰaṫ so sabaḋ veechaaré. Contemplating the Shabad, they sit upon His throne. ਤਤੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ ततु लहहि अंतरगति जाणहि सतसंगति साचु वडाई हे ॥१५॥ Ṫaṫ lahėh anṫargaṫ jaaṇėh saṫsangaṫ saach vadaa▫ee hé. ||15|| They realize the essence of reality, and know the state of their inner being. This is the true glorious greatness of those who join the Sat Sangat. ||15|| ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥ नानकु तिस का लाला गोला जिनि गुरमुखि हरि लिव लाई हे ॥१६॥६॥ Naanak ṫis kaa laalaa golaa jin gurmukʰ har liv laa▫ee hé. ||16||6|| Nanak is the servant and slave of that Gurmukh who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Lord. ||16||6|| ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਜਨੁ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੇ ॥ आपि तरै जनु पितरा तारे ॥ Aap ṫaræ jan piṫraa ṫaaré. He Himself saves His humble servant, and saves his ancestors as well. ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥ संगति मुकति सु पारि उतारे ॥ Sangaṫ mukaṫ so paar uṫaaré. His companions are liberated; He carries them across.
