ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥ आदि जुगादी अपर अपारे ॥ Aaḋ jugaaḋee apar apaaré. From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You are infinite and incomparable. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਸਾਚੇ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ साचे जोग जुगति वीचारी साचे ताड़ी लाई हे ॥१॥ Saaché jog jugaṫ veechaaree saaché ṫaaṛee laa▫ee hé. ||1|| I contemplate the Way of Yoga, the Way of Union with the True Lord. I am truly absorbed in the primal void of deep meditation. ||1|| ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਜੁਗ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰੈ ॥ केतड़िआ जुग धुंधूकारै ॥ Kéṫ▫ṛi▫aa jug ḋʰunḋʰookaaræ. For so many ages, there was only pitch darkness; ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥ आदि निरंजन खसम हमारे ॥ Aaḋ niranjan kʰasam hamaaré. You are my primal, immaculate Lord and Master. ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੈ ॥ ताड़ी लाई सिरजणहारै ॥ Ṫaaṛee laa▫ee sirjaṇhaaræ. the Creator Lord was absorbed in the primal void. ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ सचु नामु सची वडिआई साचै तखति वडाई हे ॥२॥ Sach naam sachee vadi▫aa▫ee saachæ ṫakʰaṫ vadaa▫ee hé. ||2|| There was the True Name, the glorious greatness of the Truth, and the glory of His true throne. ||2|| ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥ सतजुगि सतु संतोखु सरीरा ॥ Saṫjug saṫ sanṫokʰ sareeraa. In the Golden Age of Truth, Truth and contentment filled the bodies. ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥ सति सति वरतै गहिर ग्मभीरा ॥ Saṫ saṫ varṫæ gahir gambʰeeraa. Truth was pervasive, Truth, deep, profound and unfathomable. ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਖੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ सचा साहिबु सचु परखै साचै हुकमि चलाई हे ॥३॥ Sachaa saahib sach parkʰæ saachæ hukam chalaa▫ee hé. ||3|| The True Lord appraises the mortals on the Touchstone of Truth, and issues His True Command. ||3|| ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ सत संतोखी सतिगुरु पूरा ॥ Saṫ sanṫokʰee saṫgur pooraa. The Perfect True Guru is true and content. ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨੇ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਾ ॥ गुर का सबदु मने सो सूरा ॥ Gur kaa sabaḋ mané so sooraa. He alone is a spiritual hero, who believes in the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਾਚੁ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ साची दरगह साचु निवासा मानै हुकमु रजाई हे ॥४॥ Saachee ḋargėh saach nivaasaa maanæ hukam rajaa▫ee hé. ||4|| He alone obtains a true seat in the True Court of the Lord, who surrenders to the Command of the Commander. ||4|| ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ सतजुगि साचु कहै सभु कोई ॥ Saṫjug saach kahæ sabʰ ko▫ee. In the Golden Age of Truth, everyone spoke the Truth. ਸਚਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ सचि वरतै साचा सोई ॥ Sach varṫæ saachaa so▫ee. Truth was pervasive - the Lord was Truth. ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ मनि मुखि साचु भरम भउ भंजनु गुरमुखि साचु सखाई हे ॥५॥ Man mukʰ saach bʰaram bʰa▫o bʰanjan gurmukʰ saach sakʰaa▫ee hé. ||5|| With Truth in their minds and mouths, mortals were rid of doubt and fear. Truth was the friend of the Gurmukhs. ||5|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਅਵਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ गुरमुखि होवै सु साचु वखाणै मनमुखि पचै अवाई हे ॥६॥ Gurmukʰ hovæ so saach vakʰaaṇæ manmukʰ pachæ avaa▫ee hé. ||6|| Those who were Gurmukh spoke the Truth, while the self-willed Manmukhs wasted away in vain. ||6|| ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ਧਰਮ ਕਲਾ ਇਕ ਚੂਕੀ ॥ त्रेतै धरम कला इक चूकी ॥ Ṫaréṫæ ḋʰaram kalaa ik chookee. In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yoga, one power of Dharma was lost. ਤੀਨਿ ਚਰਣ ਇਕ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਸੂਕੀ ॥ तीनि चरण इक दुबिधा सूकी ॥ Ṫeen charaṇ ik ḋubiḋʰaa sookee. Three feet remained; through duality, one was cut off. ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੀਝੈ ॥ मनमुखि कदे न दरगह सीझै ॥ Manmukʰ kaḋé na ḋargėh seejʰæ. The Manmukh never succeeds in the Court of the Lord. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਰੀਝੈ ॥ बिनु सबदै किउ अंतरु रीझै ॥ Bin sabḋæ ki▫o anṫar reejʰæ. Without the Word of the Shabad, how can one be pleased within? ਬਾਧੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ बाधे आवहि बाधे जावहि सोझी बूझ न काई हे ॥७॥ Baaḋʰé aavahi baaḋʰé jaavėh sojʰee boojʰ na kaa▫ee hé. ||7|| In bondage they come, and in bondage they go; they understand and comprehend nothing. ||7|| ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਅਧੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ दइआ दुआपुरि अधी होई ॥ Ḋa▫i▫aa ḋu▫aapur aḋʰee ho▫ee. In the Brass Age of Dwaapur Yuga, compassion was cut in half. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ गुरमुखि विरला चीनै कोई ॥ Gurmukʰ virlaa cheenæ ko▫ee. Only a few, as Gurmukh, remembered the Lord. ਦੁਇ ਪਗ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਰੇ ਧਰਣੀਧਰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਿਥਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ दुइ पग धरमु धरे धरणीधर गुरमुखि साचु तिथाई हे ॥८॥ Ḋu▫é pag ḋʰaram ḋʰaré ḋʰarṇeeḋʰar gurmukʰ saach ṫiṫʰaa▫ee hé. ||8|| Dharmic faith, which upholds and supports the earth, had only two feet; Truth was revealed to the Gurmukhs. ||8|| ਰਾਜੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਥਾਏ ॥ राजे धरमु करहि परथाए ॥ Raajé ḋʰaram karahi parṫʰaa▫é. The kings acted righteously only out of self-interest. ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧੇ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਾਏ ॥ आसा बंधे दानु कराए ॥ Aasaa banḋʰé ḋaan karaa▫é. Tied to hopes of reward, they gave to charities. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ राम नाम बिनु मुकति न होई थाके करम कमाई हे ॥९॥ Raam naam bin mukaṫ na ho▫ee ṫʰaaké karam kamaa▫ee hé. ||9|| Without the Lord’s Name, liberation did not come, although they grew weary of performing rituals. ||9|| ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮੰਗਾਹੀ ॥ करम धरम करि मुकति मंगाही ॥ Karam ḋʰaram kar mukaṫ mangaa▫ee. Practicing religious rituals, they sought liberation, ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ॥ मुकति पदारथु सबदि सलाही ॥ Mukaṫ paḋaaraṫʰ sabaḋ salaahee. but the treasure of liberation comes only by praising the Shabad. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ बिनु गुर सबदै मुकति न होई परपंचु करि भरमाई हे ॥१०॥ Bin gur sabḋæ mukaṫ na ho▫ee parpanch kar bʰarmaa▫ee hé. ||10|| Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, liberation is not obtained; practicing hypocrisy, they wander around confused. ||10|| ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਛੋਡੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ माइआ ममता छोडी न जाई ॥ Maa▫i▫aa mamṫaa chʰodee na jaa▫ee. Love and attachment to Maya cannot be abandoned. ਸੇ ਛੂਟੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ से छूटे सचु कार कमाई ॥ Sé chʰooté sach kaar kamaa▫ee. They alone find release, who practice deeds of Truth. ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ अहिनिसि भगति रते वीचारी ठाकुर सिउ बणि आई हे ॥११॥ Ahinis bʰagaṫ raṫé veechaaree tʰaakur si▫o baṇ aa▫ee hé. ||11|| Day and night, the devotees remain imbued with contemplative meditation; they become just like their Lord and Master. ||11|| ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ॥ जिउ तुधु भावै तिवै चलावहि ॥ Ji▫o ṫuḋʰ bʰaavæ ṫivæ chalaavėh. They walk as You will them to walk. ਇਕਿ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਵਹਿ ॥ इकि जप तप करि करि तीरथ नावहि ॥ Ik jap ṫap kar kar ṫiraṫʰ naavėh. Some chant and practice intensive meditation, and take cleansing baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਪਤੀਜੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ हठि निग्रहि अपतीजु न भीजै बिनु हरि गुर किनि पति पाई हे ॥१२॥ Hatʰ nigrahi apṫeej na bʰeejæ bin har gur kin paṫ paa▫ee hé. ||12|| By stubborn rituals of self-suppression, the Lord is not pleased. No one has ever obtained honor, without the Lord, without the Guru. ||12|| ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਭਾਖੀ ॥ बिनु गुर पूरे किनै न भाखी ॥ Bin gur pooré kinæ na bʰaakʰee. Without the Perfect Guru, no one has even described it. ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ मनमुखि कूड़ु वरतै वरतारा बिनु सतिगुर भरमु न जाई हे ॥१३॥ Manmukʰ kooṛ varṫæ varṫaaraa bin saṫgur bʰaram na jaa▫ee hé. ||13|| The self-willed Manmukhs have staged the show of falsehood. Without the True Guru, doubt does not depart. ||13|| ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿ ਇਕ ਕਲ ਰਾਖੀ ॥ कली काल महि इक कल राखी ॥ Kalee kaal mėh ik kal raakʰee. In the Iron Age, the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, only one power remains. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਿਰੰਦਾ ॥ सतिगुरु वेपरवाहु सिरंदा ॥ Saṫgur véparvaahu siranḋaa. The True Guru is the Creator Lord, independent and carefree. ਨਾ ਜਮ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਛੰਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ॥ ना जम काणि न छंदा बंदा ॥ Naa jam kaaṇ na chʰanḋaa banḋaa. He does not fear death, and He is not dependent on mortal men. ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ जो तिसु सेवे सो अबिनासी ना तिसु कालु संताई हे ॥१४॥ Jo ṫis sévé so abʰinaasee naa ṫis kaal sanṫaa▫ee hé. ||14|| Whoever serves Him becomes immortal and imperishable, and will not be tortured by death. ||14|| ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰੇ ॥ गुर महि आपु रखिआ करतारे ॥ Gur mėh aap rakʰi▫aa karṫaaré. The Creator Lord has enshrined Himself within the Guru. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥ गुरमुखि कोटि असंख उधारे ॥ Gurmukʰ kot asaⁿkʰ uḋʰaaré. The Gurmukh saves countless millions. ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ सरब जीआ जगजीवनु दाता निरभउ मैलु न काई हे ॥१५॥ Sarab jee▫aa jagjeevan ḋaaṫaa nirbʰa▫o mæl na kaa▫ee hé. ||15|| The Life of the World is the Great Giver of all beings. The Fearless Lord has no filth at all. ||15|| ਸਗਲੇ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ॥ सगले जाचहि गुर भंडारी ॥ Saglé jaachėh gur bʰandaaree. Everyone begs from the Guru, God’s Treasurer. ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥ आपि निरंजनु अलख अपारी ॥ Aap niranjan alakʰ apaaree. He Himself is the immaculate, unknowable, infinite Lord. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਚੈ ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੪॥ नानकु साचु कहै प्रभ जाचै मै दीजै साचु रजाई हे ॥१६॥४॥ Naanak saach kahæ parabʰ jaachæ mæ ḋeejæ saach rajaa▫ee hé. ||16||4|| Nanak speaks the Truth; he begs from God. Please bless me with the Truth, by Your Will. ||16||4||
