ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਰਹਣਾ ਨਹੀ ਧੁਰਿ ਫਾਟੇ ਚੀਰੈ ॥ हुकमु भइआ रहणा नही धुरि फाटे चीरै ॥ Hukam bʰa▫i▫aa rahṇaa nahee ḋʰur faaté cheeræ. The Order is issued, and he cannot remain; the permit to stay has been torn up. ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਵਗਣਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਸਹੁ ਦੇਹ ਸਰੀਰੈ ॥ एहु मनु अवगणि बाधिआ सहु देह सरीरै ॥ Éhu man avgaṇ baaḋʰi▫aa saho ḋéh sareeræ. This mind is tied to its faults; it suffers terrible pain in its body. ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਾਈਅਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਗੁਨਹ ਫਕੀਰੈ ॥੧॥ पूरै गुरि बखसाईअहि सभि गुनह फकीरै ॥१॥ Pooræ gur bakʰsaa▫ee▫ah sabʰ gunah fakeeræ. ||1|| The Perfect Guru forgives all the mistakes of the beggar at His Door. ||1|| ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਬੁਝੁ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ किउ रहीऐ उठि चलणा बुझु सबद बीचारा ॥ Ki▫o rahee▫æ utʰ chalṇaa bujʰ sabaḋ beechaaraa. How can he stay here? He must get up and depart. Contemplate the Word of the Shabad, and understand this. ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ जिसु तू मेलहि सो मिलै धुरि हुकमु अपारा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Jis ṫoo mélėh so milæ ḋʰur hukam apaaraa. ||1|| rahaa▫o. He alone is united, whom You, O Lord, unite. Such is the Primal Command of the Infinite Lord. ||1||Pause|| ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਉ ॥ जिउ तू राखहि तिउ रहा जो देहि सु खाउ ॥ Ji▫o ṫoo raakʰahi ṫi▫o rahaa jo ḋėh so kʰaa▫o. As You keep me, I remain; whatever You give me, I eat. ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਚਲਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਉ ॥ जिउ तू चलावहि तिउ चला मुखि अमृत नाउ ॥ Ji▫o ṫoo chalaavėh ṫi▫o chalaa mukʰ amriṫ naa▫o. As You lead me, I follow, with the Ambrosial Name in my mouth. ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥੨॥ मेरे ठाकुर हथि वडिआईआ मेलहि मनि चाउ ॥२॥ Méré tʰaakur haṫʰ vaḋi▫aa▫ee▫aa mélėh man chaa▫o. ||2|| All glorious greatness rests in the hands of my Lord and Master; my mind yearns to unite with You. ||2|| ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੋਈ ॥ कीता किआ सालाहीऐ करि देखै सोई ॥ Keeṫaa ki▫aa salaahee▫æ kar ḋékʰæ so▫ee. Why should anyone praise any other created being? That Lord acts and sees. ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ जिनि कीआ सो मनि वसै मै अवरु न कोई ॥ Jin kee▫aa so man vasæ mæ avar na ko▫ee. The One who created me, abides within my mind; there is no other at all. ਸੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਾਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥ सो साचा सालाहीऐ साची पति होई ॥३॥ So saachaa salaahee▫æ saachee paṫ ho▫ee. ||3|| So, praise that True Lord, and you shall be blessed with true honor. ||3|| ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਪੜਿ ਨ ਪਹੁਚਈ ਬਹੁ ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ पंडितु पड़ि न पहुचई बहु आल जंजाला ॥ Pandiṫ paṛ na pahucha▫ee baho aal janjaalaa. The Pandit, the religious scholar, reads, but does not reach the Lord; he is totally entangled in worldly affairs. ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਦੁਇ ਸੰਗਮੇ ਖੁਧਿਆ ਜਮਕਾਲਾ ॥ पाप पुंन दुइ संगमे खुधिआ जमकाला ॥ Paap punn ḋu▫é sangmé kʰuḋʰi▫aa jamkaalaa. He keeps the company of both virtue and vice, tormented by hunger and the Messenger of Death. ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਭਉ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੪॥ विछोड़ा भउ वीसरै पूरा रखवाला ॥४॥ vichʰoṛaa bʰa▫o veesræ pooraa rakʰvaalaa. ||4|| One who is protected by the Perfect Lord, forgets separation and fear. ||4|| ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਵੈ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ जिन की लेखै पति पवै से पूरे भाई ॥ Jin kee lékʰæ paṫ pavæ sé pooré bʰaa▫ee. They alone are perfect, O Siblings of Destiny, whose honor is certified. ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ पूरे पूरी मति है सची वडिआई ॥ Pooré pooree maṫ hæ sachee vadi▫aa▫ee. Perfect is the intellect of the Perfect Lord. True is His glorious greatness. ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਥਕਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥ देदे तोटि न आवई लै लै थकि पाई ॥५॥ Ḋéḋé ṫot na aavee læ læ ṫʰak paa▫ee. ||5|| His gifts never run short, although those who receive may grow weary of receiving. ||5|| ਖਾਰ ਸਮੁਦ੍ਰੁ ਢੰਢੋਲੀਐ ਇਕੁ ਮਣੀਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ खार समुद्रु ढंढोलीऐ इकु मणीआ पावै ॥ Kʰaar samuḋar dʰandʰolee▫æ ik maṇee▫aa paavæ. Searching the salty sea, one finds the pearl. ਦੁਇ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਮਾਟੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਖਾਵੈ ॥ दुइ दिन चारि सुहावणा माटी तिसु खावै ॥ Ḋu▫é ḋin chaar suhaavaṇaa maatee ṫis kʰaavæ. It looks beautiful for a few days, but in the end, it is eaten away by dust. ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਸਤਿ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੬॥ गुरु सागरु सति सेवीऐ दे तोटि न आवै ॥६॥ Gur saagar saṫ sévee▫æ ḋé ṫot na aavæ. ||6|| If one serves the Guru, the ocean of Truth, the gifts one receives never run short. ||6|| ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਊਜਲੇ ਸਭ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥ मेरे प्रभ भावनि से ऊजले सभ मैलु भरीजै ॥ Méré parabʰ bʰaavan sé oojlé sabʰ mæl bʰareejæ. They alone are pure, who are pleasing to my God; all others are soiled with filth. ਮੈਲਾ ਊਜਲੁ ਤਾ ਥੀਐ ਪਾਰਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਭੀਜੈ ॥ मैला ऊजलु ता थीऐ पारस संगि भीजै ॥ Mælaa oojal ṫaa ṫʰee▫æ paaras sang bʰeejæ. The filthy become pure, when they meet with the Guru, the Philosopher’s Stone. ਵੰਨੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਲਾਲ ਕੀ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥ वंनी साचे लाल की किनि कीमति कीजै ॥७॥ vannee saaché laal kee kin keemaṫ keejæ. ||7|| Who can estimate the value of the color of the true jewel? ||7|| ਭੇਖੀ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਨੇ ॥ भेखी हाथ न लभई तीरथि नही दाने ॥ Bʰékʰee haaṫʰ na labʰ▫ee ṫiraṫʰ nahee ḋaané. Wearing religious robes, the Lord is not obtained, nor is He obtained by giving donations at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ਪੂਛਉ ਬੇਦ ਪੜੰਤਿਆ ਮੂਠੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਮਾਨੇ ॥ पूछउ बेद पड़ंतिआ मूठी विणु माने ॥ Poochʰa▫o béḋ paṛanṫi▫aa mootʰee viṇ maané. Go and ask the readers of the Vedas; without faith, the world is cheated. ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਗਿਆਨੇ ॥੮॥੬॥ नानक कीमति सो करे पूरा गुरु गिआने ॥८॥६॥ Naanak keemaṫ so karé pooraa gur gi▫aané. ||8||6|| O Nanak! He alone values the jewel, who is blessed with the spiritual wisdom of the Perfect Guru. ||8||6||
